Sega Ages being released in the US Q1 2004

Recommended Posts

Are they emulated versions of Sega's console versions of the games, or in the case of the arcade games, are they the emulated arcade versions? The Genesis version of Golden Axe wasn't all that great. I'd much rather have the arcade one.

They are updated versions of the originals. Basically the same game, but with updated graphics and sound, and in some cases, extra features. I've heard that some are god and some are bad, but if they're $20, I'll probably check most of them out.

Well then, i'm not buying it. My main modern console is the GameCube. Unless it's orgasmically great, i'm not going to get the Xbox version.

Wow, I didn't realize they were that well done! ;)

I'd love to see these come to the Gamecube, since that's all I have (and likely all I'm going to have for quite some time). Space Harrier is the only one I'd be really interested in anyways (what ever happened to Planet Harriers? Wasn't that supposed to come to the Gamecube??)... although I liked Golden Axe too.

Wasn't there a new version of Space Harrier supposedly coming out for the Dreamcast before Sega axed the console? I remember the Official Dreamcast Magazine drooling all over the arcade version, and talking about it's eventual port to the DC, because it was based on NAOMI hardware. I haven't been in an arcade in a while, so I don't know if the arcade version even came out. Anyone?

Heh, typo earlier, that's what comes of using a keyboard that's running through an X-Arcade!

I'vev heard that Space Harrier is the least impressive of the bunch, along with Golden Axe. But, you never can tell by what you hear from one person.

Well, Planet Harriers was built on the Hikaru hardware, which was similar to the Naomi (or Dreamcast), except with more memory. There were rumors of a Dreamcast conversion, mostly due to the similarities in the hardware, but I don't know if Sega actually announced it or anything. Last I had heard, they were planning on making it a Gamecube exclusive, but that was quite some time ago, and nothing has shown up. Perhaps Sega decided that the arcade version wasn't successful enough to warrant a console port (which might be true... I've never actually played Planet Harriers... but I loved Space Harrier enough that I would definitely buy Planet Harriers anyways).

Damn, that sucks... One of these days I'll have to get off my butt and get the 32X version, it was quite good. I'm also hoping they'll port Outrun 2 to the Gamecube, but I doubt that's going to happen anytime soon :( Sega makes weird decisions about what games go to which systems.

This doesn't seem so impressive to me. I love the concept of rereleasing older games, for the nostaglia, and, frankly, for the playability. Lots of GREAT older games that those of us 30 somethings grew up with... But as seperate releases?

Why would I, as a "nostaglic consumer" pay 20$ for a ps2 golden axe with better graphics? When I can get the game for 3 bucks for the sega genesis, AND get a genesis for 15$? Not very smart marketing imo.

Midway Arcade Treasures is interesting to me, because there are a bunch of games (A HUGE bunch... for 1/2 the games I would have been willing to pay 2x the MSRP). That's value. Namco Museum is neat, too. Again, value...

There are some games I suppose that are harder to find on the orginal console that you could get away with charging too much to begin with, and maybe a few people would just like the convience (Although, on a coffee table, I have a Jaguar, Genesis, Xbox, and PS2 all hooked to the same TV... it's not so inconvient - admittedly, wish there was room for the Vic20, and odyssey2, but there is good variety there).

In general, I am not happy about this kind of marketing/packaging at all. I would love to have an updated Golden Axe (and yes, I have it for the genesis) I wouldn't pay more than a few dollars for it tho. Unless it made me breakfast or something

Here's a report from someone on another board I visit, who's played some of these:

"Monaco GP. This was quite a surprise. Basically they've taken the old top-down dodge-the-oncoming vehicles racer, thrown in MarioKart style power-ups, stars which when collected in series speed you up, and corners you actually have to do something about. And once you've got a good stash of stars in, it really starts going blindingly fast.. not F-Zero GX but surprisingly close. This really does come close to being a Zone game, which was quite a surprise

Fantasy Zone - Pretty much the same as the original with some weird cel-shading effects. The scrolling seems a bit screwed-up, though - with any engine upgrade it's easy to find that in order to move fast, you have to move so near the edge of the screen that it's impossible to see oncoming enemies. The add-on here is "challenge mode", in which poor old Opa-Opa only gets one life per stage, and coins are carried over between stages AND GAMES; the idea is to save up lots of money to buy stupidly broken weapons (14 way shot? Infinate smart bombs?) from the Laboratory. One decided annoyance: no inbuilt autofire! (Actually it's one of the laboratory items..)

Space Harrier - Standard Space Harrier with lots of Engrish samples ("Cool Harrier! You can beat them all!" "You got attitude!"), weapon power-ups, and a weird lock-on laser weapon. The souped-up graphics seem to hurt the game a bit; the dragon at the end of stage 1 is nowhere near as satisfying to fight as it was on the original.

Golden Axe - Very little added except some flat and dull 3D graphics. Oh yea, and they still haven't added any more enemies, so Guy With A Spiked Club, Guy With A Big Mace and Girl With An Axe is all you get. About the only add-on I can see is that you now have an energy bar which charges up as you kill stuff and, when maxed out, gives you a potion to save up towards your magic. This means that Tyris can practically throw Level 6 magic around like it was water. Not too cool."

Agreed, all these should be on one disc and sell for $19.95 or $29.95 at most. The Phantasy Star Collection on the GBA, now that was cool. If Sega wants to make some money, they should re-release the DC Sega Smash pack and release a Panzer Dragoon trilogy game, across all next gen consoles. I would pay full price for a Panzer Dragoon trilogy game.

Putting them all one collection was what they did with the american release of the saturn sega ages. But anyhow, all these games are like 5-10 bucks in japan, and I'm betting they'll be budget titles over here too.

Only interested in Monaco GP.

I hope they do Turbo, Out Run, Turbo Out Run, Outrunners, Sega Rally, and whatever nice racing games they've made.

I'd love to see Tac-Scan too. Doing Monaco GP gives me some hope it will eventually happen to at least a game or two.

I am really surprised that Sega has done very little with Zaxxon. THat would be an awesome game to update. Yes, I know they did Zaxxon 3D and Zaxxon Motherbase (?) , but both were weak efforts and didn't capture the feel of the original.

yippee, yahoo :|

Sega has 3,000 different cool, classic games in their library yet they choose to re-re-re-release a Space Harrier game for the 10,000th time. Is there a platform in existance besides the Virtual Boy and the Jaguar that hasn't had a version of Space Harrier? Lemme guess what's next, Hang On, Out Run and Afterburner updates

These games need to die already. :x

I'm waiting to hear if any of these will include OutRun.

I've emailed the mailbag at IGN 5 times with the question, and the 6th time I emailed them asking why they only ever answer idiotic questions and they decided to answer that one...

I can't win

:(

And the US publisher just sent me some automated response to my question when I tried them.
