PAL games and European market

Recommended Posts

First, to any who know, a question:

How do you know (or do you?) which PAL games will work on NTSC? I picked up a cheap "Bobby Geht Heim" to test it out - and my screen rolls. My TV is about a year old - I thought maybe newer TVs worked better?

Anyway, this leads to my second question.... I've noticed on Ebay how many games I want are being sold from Germany/England etc. , usually NEW for about $5 when the same games are nowhere to be seen here - or really expensive! Is there just more interest in collecting here - or is there just so much surplus? Needless to say, I'd buy a bunch if I thought they'd play on my TV!!!

:(

I'm sure this is a tired ques/topic - forgive me!! :D

The rare games here were released in larger quantities in european markets. The rare ones here are usually the crappy games, that is why they didn't sell a lot here. I guess europeans like bad games, because the bad rare ones are always common in PAL

The only way to get a pal game to work on ntsc, would be to get an older tv with vertical hold, or a newer "multiformat" tv.

I have a small security camera monitor that plays pal roms thru the supercharger.

Sometimes the color will be off or will be in black/white

If you're talking about the rare Atari released titles, I think it has to do with the Crash, which was not as big in Europe as it was in the USA. Games like Fatal Run, Xenophobe, Ikari Warriors, Klax were still on sale in the early nineties overhere.

Other companies, like Zimag/Bit Corp and Bomb may have targetted Europe and Asia first, before entering the US market.

Cheers,

Marco

Well said, Marco. And how do you pretend games like "Obelix" not being rare in the US where no-one knows who he is??? Of course it's slightly more common in Europe, where even a tree could tell you who Obelix is.
