Rocko
Anyone read a review that overrates a lynx game? I just bought this game, and I thought "What is this shi**?" I hopped onto AA and got this review about the game: http://www.digiserve.com/eescape/atari/lyn...an-Returns.html I wish I could return it, but I got it from returning a non-working Hard Drivin'. Gregory DG
In my humble and rather biased opinion, I think TAT's average score style is the best way to go. You'll notice Batman Returns gets an average rating of 63% making it 73rd out of 91 Lynx games. http://www.ataritimes.com/lynx/reviews/
Clint Thompson
I have to agree that 8 is a little high for Batman Returns. 1st, I never even liked the Batman series and always thought it was sort of (ok, it's definately) strange. 2nd, I've learned to never to listen to other people's opinions that you don't know! Personally I would rate Batman more on a 5.5 maybe 6 out of 10 for the Lynx but the game is damn hard and frustrating! Then again, Hard Drivin is a piece of sh** too. I got my Lynx back in 95 when they had the promotions going on with Lynx and 4 games. Batman and Hard Drivin' were 2 of them. I popped in HD and just started laughing because the title fits the game so well! (no kidding!)
SteveW
I used to be good on Hard Drivin'. But I can't seem to play it as well as I used to. I tried playing the arcade version not too long ago, and I was lousy at it. But I used to be able to get all the way through it years back. I guess i'm getting old or something. babble
I must be a little weird in actually quite liking Hard Drivin' - I like the way it allows you to screw up in so many different ways. And you need to concentrate very hard on your speed, steering etc. but its not too bad - I can get a couple of laps in on the speed track before the time runs out. The stunt track is *very* hard indeed because it requires even more precision. But I do agree Batman is utter rubbish. Very dull sideways scrolling game - never even completed the first level it was so dull. Think I have a couple of carts of it, people keep giving it away free with things, its that good.... patters98
I used to really like HD when I got it when it first came out. If you could play it back then, you never really forget the techniques. But if you buy it now I bet you wouldn't invest more than about 5 minutes before giving up in disgust. At face value it is pretty terrible, but it was novel at the time. I've found these reviews to be fair scores (5/10 for HD): http://web.archive.org/web/20000818050544/...lynx/index.html It's a Web Archive link because the real site has been redone and the reviews seem to be inaccessible. Rocko
Yep. They also had rampart, (I love that game), but I thought I would try something new. So I bought hard drivn' and it didnt work. So I returned it and got batman returns. It sucked, but I cant return it. The worst part is... I was so desperate for a Lynx game, I paid $10 . If anyone has a cheap rampart for sale, tell me! I will give you my batman returns!
Clint Thompson
I seriously don't think I have Rampart... but I may have that in my closet downstairs somewhere. I know I have cyberball and I remember getting Rampart boxed but not sure if I still have it from my last move. If I find it, I'll send it to you! +Sauron
Rampart isn't a difficult Lynx game to find, which is good because it's one of the best! You really should have consulted with us before grabbing those games, although personally I don't think Batman Returns is THAT bad... +davidcalgary29
I think that it's important to remember that this review was written in 1992 -- and not 2003 -- and without the perspective brought by that intervening decade. Have better hybrid side-scrolling shooters / platformers emerged since "Batman Returns" was released? Of course! The Lynx didn't get any of those, though, and when it was released, "Batman Returns" was a refreshing entry into the Lynx library. It still boasts some of the better graphics to be found in a commercial Lynx release. "Batman Returns" was a tie-in with a hugely-successful and generally well-received movie, and it's harder to write a wholly objective review when a game's carrying that kind of cultural baggage. Now, of course, I can't even remember what the general plotline of the movie is, and I am more likely to judge the game on its own merits. You can imagine that "Enter the Matrix" is going to suffer just this type of critical re-evaluation in ten years or so, when future "retro gamers" who plug it in just won't be able to get it without the movie's greater context. Rob Jung also didn't have the benefit of our 20/20 hindsight, of course, and some games just age better than others, just as many of our other cultural artifacts do. Does anyone really think that "Encino Man" was a better movie than "Reservoir Dogs", just because it had a gross 20x larger than Tarantino's movie? That "Batman Returns" game tie-in sold quite a few Lynxes, but today most of us would probably have another go at "Rampart" (also released in 91-92).[/i]

goatdan
I bought my Lynx for Hydra, and I was disappointed by that game (but on the other hand, I hadn't really heard anything about it before I bought it). I ended up getting Batman Returns at some point in my Lynx collection, and it is easily in my top five Lynx games. It isn't easy, but it is challenging and if you keep playing, you are rewarded. At least, that is what I have found Remember that a review is only what someone else thinks of the game. It isn't the end all. There are a number of games that I really like the reviews think are horrible (2600 Pac-Man, anyone?) and there are a number of games that reviews generally love and I don't. It's all in the eye of the beholder... Oh, the GOAT Store has Rampart cheap
Major Havoc 2049
Robert Jung was the man back in the day on the Lynx usenet forums. Us Lynx fans used to really look forward to his reviews. Lynx games were $29.95 to $49.95, so any information that helped you make an informed purchase was greatly appreciated. Robert would post his reviews within a few days after a game was released. You have to remember though, that it is just one persons view. The majority of Batman Returns reviews were negative back then. I also seem to remember that Robert Jung was a big comic book fan, so that might have influenced his review.

babble
Cheer up and spend the next $10 more wisely. Chips Challenge, Warbirds, Klax, Slimeworld, Lemmings are all excellent IMO. And California Games is rather amusing too - that intro music always brings back old memories of the Lynx for me. Maybe I'll record it and use it as a ring tone..... bergbros2
Batman Returns as the top five games you played on the Lynx, GoatDan? Hmm. You must have played all of the Lynx games including Shanghai, Xenophobe, Klax, Paperboy, Joust, Missle Command, Rampart, Chips Challenge, Crystal Mines II, Ninja Gaiden, S.T.U.N. Runner, Rampage, A.P.B., Raiden, Zarlor Mercenary, Ms. Pac-man, Pinball, Rygar, Slimeword, Toki, Battlezone, Robotron, Lemmings, Desert Strike, etc. et al. and you still find Batman Returns in the top five? Well, that 's your opinion. Jung's reviews are generally ok and I absolutely agree with him on Electrocop, the most overated game the Lynx has, but no one is 100%. He is wrong on the Batman Returns game as the game is virtually unplayable and unexceptional side scroller which is totally inferior to the Ninja Gaiden series also on the Lynx. I still remember a reviewer on another website gave the game a 6% and said it was the second worst game he ever played. It is strictly for collectors only. My advice, before buying the game, try it on the Handy emulator first, if you can.

This is one game that people either seem to like (not love) or hate. IMO, the only truly unplayable Lynx games are Pit Fighter, Tournament Cyberball, and what has to be the biggest disappointment, Ninja Gaiden III (and especially after the original Ninja Gaiden, which I really like). I've said it before, and I'll say it again -- NG3 looks like a Game Gear game diluted through an original GameBoy, and it has to have the worst soundtrack I've ever heard on a Lynx game. Ugh! chris_lynx1989
hard drivin' is not that bad really.you have to use the auto tranny option and learn to use the throttle and steering right.i was very turned off in the beginning when i got this game back in 1991(i think it was 1991) until is used a little persistance and patience with the game.the game was a bit frustrating in the arcade for me as well.i found the lynx version to be very good once i got used to playing the thing on my lynx unit.the speed track was always the easiest for me.then i mastered the "loop" and it was not so bad after all either.just took a bit of time to get the speed and such right on the loop. batman returns is a rather hard game to play.i could only make it to the beginning of the second level at best before learning of the invincibity code and such back in 1992 or 93.this made the game "far" more playable and enjoyable for me to play.try the code on it.it helps make make it a much better game when nothing shoots you down or kills you off.--the lynxer

Ugh! Well, I have said this before also: The Ninja Gaiden 3 soundtrack is great! Yumy! I hope you don't have any problem with your Lynx loudspeaker. Someone else here think that NG3 has the worst soundtrack on a Lynx Game?? davidcalgary29 you are a very wise man.
