Ask him what kind of game genres and what developers he likes. Then see what system has the games you think he would like. Some people think the Xbox is best, some the GC. Beauty is in the eye of the beholder.

I'm not a big fan of Nintendo franchises, so I think the Xbox is better. If your brother likes Nintendo games, go with the GC.

I agree with MH. For the most part I think the better exclusives are on the GC (F-Zero GX, Metroid Prime, Viewtiful Joe) so that's what I went with. Of course, YMMV.

i think at this moment, you cant beat the price of a gamecube. if i were getting a free console for christmas, i wouldnt have the gall to bitch about which system that turned out to be.

that said the xbox is a very nice machine, and you wont go wrong with either choice :)

Good points. I would say you need to balance the two considerations:

1. Which types of games does he like? (My preference is entirely in the GCN camp.)

2. GameCube is much cheaper than XBOX.

Decide how important #2 is to you, as that might override #1.

:D

There's an additional factor:

3. Which company (Nintendo or Microsoft) do you want getting your money?

(Granted, both lose on the console hardware... but over the long haul they'll be getting your money either through direct game sales or licenses.)

It will be for a 10 year old boy. I think i'll go with the gamecube cause its cheaper, plus he won't know the difference.

I wouldn't necessarily say that a 10-year-old wouldn't know the difference! But I do think for someone that age, the GCN is definitely the better choice.

Depends on genres and characters, really. I mean, Xbox has GTA, panzer dragoon orta, halo, toejam & earl 3, and myriads of sports and FPS games. The Cube's got the major nintendo franchise players (mario, zelda, metroid, etc.), as well as several good sega exclusives, and the star wars games. If you were going based on 3rd party games, Xbox has the cube's number, but me at least, I own more cube then xbox games.

The Cube if he likes fun games, the Xbox if he likes eye candy. Ok Im hakf joking ;) If hes into star wars heavy definetly get an Xbox, although the cube has the rogue leader games, they dont match KOTOR and Jedi Acadamey, oh and Jedi Oucast is a lot better on the Xbox....but IMHO the cube has the best overall lineup of titles...

Why not try hinting around to him(without giving the big suprise away of course) and see what he says?

Or take him to a game store(or game section of a retail store) and see what catches his attention the most.

I'd go Gamecube. So far I haven't seen any "must have" games on the X-Box other than Halo. GC has a bunch of very cool "niche" games that are alot of fun. Not to mention all the Mario Bros., Legend of Zelda, and Metroid games. Oh and don't forget the Gameboy Advance player...

My 8-year-old knew the difference when he was 5.

Why don't you try asking him what he thinks about all the systems currently out there, find out which he would prefer and get him that. More than likely he'd be happy no matter what he got, but there's nothing more disappointing than wanting one thing and getting the opposite

Simply ask him what he thinks of the current line of coneoles. Unless he has it, he might surprise you by thinking more highly of PS2. That would get the info you need without giving anything to much away.

Another option, ask your parents, He's probably at one time or other mentioned to them "I wanna gamecube/xbox/ps2" Plus, explaining your situation to them, you may find they already bought him one of the systems.

If you get em a GameCube, get a GameBoy Player to go with it. GB, GBC, and GBA on TV is just awesome (unless he don't have any games)

you also can actually find some decently priced games for it too...my Target had Robotech for 16.00 and the players choice titles are fairly cheap...inlcuding the wonderful Pacmanworld 2

I agree the xbox is more for the adult gamers.

So I guess you think adults are hormonal 13 year olds. Most players consider games to be adult oriented if it has blood, curses, and bouncing boobs everywhere.

Is there anyone out there like me, who believes The Zelda series (especially OoT) is more of an adult game than anything out there?

Get your bro a GC. its smaller, has better load times, better first party titles, better looking (Yes, it is), and a nice sized controller. If you wanna be the best bro ever then pick up S-video cables too.
