RCmodeler #1 Posted December 4, 2003 I'm glad I didn't listen to the reviews. This game was *far* from mediocre. Definitely one of the best 2D platformers I've played (and the best for the Cube). The only reason I bought this game was because of EBgames "2 for $25" deal, and I thought $12.50 was a good deal for Luigi's even if reviewers said it was mediocre. Going around and sucking up ghosts didn't sound like fun, but fortunately Luigi turned out to be a lot like Zelda: - Enter room - Explore - Find out the secret to beat the room's ghosts. The graphics... the sound... the overall atmosphere of the game was perfect for recreating the eerie environment of a haunted mansion (just as Banjo-Kazooie's atmosphere was near-flawless). Cheers for Luigi's Mansion bringing back some classic/retro style goodness. Oh and one more thought: Length. No it was not too short. It was *just right*. I'd rather play a short, solid game like Luigi's than a game that goes on far too long and feels streeeetched like Metroid Prime or Zelda: Wind Waker. Luigi's ended just as I was starting to get bored... making it the perfect length IMHO.
Room 34 #2 Posted December 4, 2003 Glad to hear. This is one of the titles I am planning to get first once I get my GameCube. Aside from this, what would be good games to pick up first?
Xot #3 Posted December 4, 2003 Wow. Well, now it's on my "to check out" list.
cimerians #4 Posted December 4, 2003 I really enjoyed Luigi's mansion. One of the best games for Gamecube. One thing I noticed that you need to land a job as a video game reviewer: -- Must be young and have lots of time on your hands. (Which means score the game a bit low if doesn't "last long", in other words 10 hours or less.) -- Must give at least a good score to a popular name (example: automatic GOOD score if its called Metal Gear, Final Fantasy or Grand Theft Auto) I try not to take reviews seriously anymore regardless of what game they are talking about. Example: -- I could not stand Castlevania Lament of Innocence yet every magazine and online site I saw gave it a good score or above. I was tricked into buying it. -- Every site I saw complained about Luigi's Mansion in some way or another and I absolutely could not see any flaw with it. It seems like a perfect game to me. I bought it after playing it as a demo on display a year ago and was very glad that I did.

Atariboy #6 Posted December 4, 2003 How is it a 2d platformer?
liveinabin #7 Posted December 4, 2003 Yeah, it's not really 2d or a platformer Anyway, I totally agree it's a great game. There are some really clever graphic effects going on in there. Beautiful characterizaion too. Mario doesn't have half that personality.
RCmodeler #8 Posted December 4, 2003 How is it a 2d platformer? In the same way that Pac-Man World 1 was a 2D platformer. It's a sideways scroller with a fixed camera, not true 3D like Mario or Spyro. As for platformer, that's debateable. But I consider the different floors to be platforms that Luigi moves up and down.... just like Pitfall 2.

I'm not sure if 'platformer' is the term I'd use...it uses a variation on the old "3/4 perspective"...closer to, say, Gauntlet or Robotron than the original Super Mario. We've sung its praises in other message boards. Essentially, it's a terrific "short story" of a game, with lots of attention to detail (especially in the sound department), some lovely graphics, and a nifty new play mechanic. "Seriously though, who would believe that mansions get given away in contests?! Talk about stupid! What do they feed you Mario brothers anyway...gullible soup?"
