RCmodeler #1 Posted December 4, 2003 It's cheap, but I don't want to waste my time on another crap game (like Dark Stone was).
Adrian M #2 Posted December 4, 2003 I bought it for my XBOX and I was mostly unimpressed. Yes, there's a great selection of characters, but something just doesn't "feel" right about the game, particularly the SNK characters which seem to have been Capcom-ized in regards to their combos and general moves. The other major flaw is the serious lack of backgrounds. I'd estimate that there are less than 10 backgrounds, and they have a nasty tendency to repeat too often. I'd say skip it, but then again, I invested a lot of time in CvSNK1 on Dreamcast.
+kisrael #3 Posted December 4, 2003 A little off-topic, but is it just me, or is Marvel vs Capcom 2 on Xbox a much worse looking, more choppy, and less fun game than Marvel vs Capcom on DC? The 3D backgrounds look like crap, and the flow seems a lot less smooth overall.
Major Havoc 2049 #4 Posted December 4, 2003 I'm with Adrian M about the SNK characters and the backgrounds. The backgrounds look like arse. The backgrounds in KOF Dream Match 99' on the Dreamcast are leagues better. Capcom just seems to be going cheap with their 2D fighters lately. The cool thing about CVS 2 is that you can play it on Live, which is cool. Unless your really skilled though, be prepared to get schooled by a bunch of hardcore 2D fighting vets. I know I got my arse kicked reagularly....I traded CVS 2 in. I'm all about 3D fighters these days! Can't wait for Dead or Alive Online! SNK did say that they were going to release SNK vs Capcom for the Xbox, that might be better.
Ze_ro #5 Posted December 4, 2003 I very much liked Capcom Vs. SNK 2 on the Dreamcast... I thought the backgrounds looked excellent too. There's a huge amount of characters, and with all the different grooves, and fiddling around with teams, it'll last a long time. The SNK characters do have more of a Capcom feel to them, but I've always considered that a good thing. My only complaint was that the bosses got super cheap some times. God Rugal was particularly annoying. You pretty much have to find a tactic that works, and then keep using it over and over and over again. Reminds me of all the "jump back, jump forward and kick" tactics you needed to beat Goro in Mortal Kombat... It sort of ruins the fun when you have to resort to stuff like that. --Zero
ubersaurus #6 Posted December 4, 2003 Meh, CvS2 was a subpar fighting game. Aesthetics aside (because those aren't really important) the game just doesn't play very well. Nowhere on the level of SF3: 3rd Strike, KOF 98, Guilty Gear XX, or even marvel vs capcom 2. It's very slow paced, its very defensive, and in general, just not the kind of fighting game I like. RCmodeler #7 Posted December 4, 2003 OKAY THANKS! I'll stick to Virtua Fighter 4 and Tekken Tag and Soul Edge. :-)
chrisbid #8 Posted December 4, 2003 i happened to like the game on the dreamcast, the PS2 version was a tad annoying/ugly, and i havent played it on the cube or xbox i am looking forward to seeing snk vs capcom chaos on an affordable platform next year
Paralistalon #9 Posted December 5, 2003 Capcom VS SNK 2 is only hailed as one of the deepest and greatest fighting games of all time! I guess it comes down to whether or not you like 2D fighting games and Capcom. The only complaint I'd give it is that it's hard to play on a GameCube controller because that small D-pad is hard on the thumbs.
DeV0 #10 Posted December 5, 2003 I only have the DC version and can say that it is the greates 2D fighter of all time! Havent played the other platforms but if they are as good as the DC version i would highly recomend it.
Ze_ro #11 Posted December 5, 2003 I'm glad to see that I'm not the only person who liked this game! I really wish they would have redone Morrigan's sprite... it looks thoroughly awful next to the high-res sprites for all the other characters. It looked just as bad in the first CVS game (which was annoying since her stage was absolutely amazing). --Zero
RCmodeler #12 Posted December 5, 2003 So how does the "2D" part work? Are those giant sprites on screen? Or are they just flattened polygons like Paper Mario?
ubersaurus #13 Posted December 5, 2003 Capcom VS SNK 2 is only hailed as one of the deepest and greatest fighting games of all time! BY WHO???? Anyone I know who's put any actual time into the game says "well its not as bad as everyone says it is" or "its better then cvs1" or "what else is there to play?" No, deep 2D fighters, you could go with Street Fighter 2 Turbo, you could go with SF Alpha 3, or guilty gear xx, or samurai shodown V. But CvS2? It's only real depth comes from the roll cancelling glitch, and they took that out in the cube and xbox version!
Adrian M #14 Posted December 5, 2003 So how does the "2D" part work? Are those giant sprites on screen? Or are they just flattened polygons like Paper Mario? The fighters are 2D sprites. The backgrounds are 3D (2.5d in some cases) in that they move, rotate and do some special effects but with no real impact to the characters or overall fighting. Think of the backgrounds simply as 3D non-interactive wallpaper.
Ze_ro #15 Posted December 5, 2003 No, deep 2D fighters, you could go with Street Fighter 2 Turbo, you could go with SF Alpha 3, or guilty gear xx, or samurai shodown V. But CvS2? Well, I'd certainly say that CVS2 is deeper than SF2T or SFA3, if only due to the flexibility of the groove system (groove edit mode is a nice addition)... but CVS2 is definitely not as deep as Guilty Gear XX (Haven't played Samurai Showdown V though). I really like CVS2... but I wouldn't say it's the best 2D fighter out there (Street Fighter Alpha 3 is probably still my favorite). --Zero
RCmodeler #16 Posted December 5, 2003 Are there any other good 2D fighters? Like Marvel vs. DC (or something such title)?
Adrian M #17 Posted December 5, 2003 Are there any other good 2D fighters? Like Marvel vs. DC (or something such title)? For 2D fighters on XBOX you can buy CVS2, Marvel Vs. Capcom 2, and Kabuki Warriors. All other fighting games are 3D.
Ze_ro #18 Posted December 5, 2003 *sigh*... I guess 2D fighting games are going the way of the text adventure... --Zero
ultravi0let #19 Posted December 5, 2003 go with Streetfighter Alpha III on the Gameboy Advance its the best version so far of the game. but then again Super StreetFighter II Turbo is one of my personal faves...

You'd be surprised the depth of SF2 though. I've been playing cvs2 since it came out in sept. 2001, and I can honestly say that the only grooves that really change a matchup is A-groove, since you have to be a bit more careful when you attack, and they can roll cancel. SF2, its all about what your character can do, and how they can fight other characters. The strategy involved with that game is insane for how simplistic it is on the surface. SFA3 is definitely good with depth. Hell, its been 5 years later and the japanese are still finding new strategies to use in the game. V-ism may be stronger then the other 2 in the game, but by no means is A-ism worthless, anymore at least. And X-ism, well, its always kinda sucked. If anything. all the isms change a matchup though-they give characters different moves, different guard break bar, different move properties, all sorts of fun stuff. The only problem I have with alpha 3 is the INSANE learning curve. CvS2 kicks the crap out of SvC Chaos though-that much isn't opinion, that's FACT.
