Are there any true RPGs for the 2600?

Recommended Posts

I haven't played Megamax X.  How is that game an RPG?

It isn't. Read JB's post again carefully. Notice how he said "And if anyone trys to classify Megaman X as an RPG then ... I have no hope for the world"?

Basically people are attaching the term "RPG" to far too many games which is the point that JB is making.

In the Adventure of Link, Link has HP, MP, learns spells, acquires items and learns new moves as the game progresses. Is it an RPG?

To me it fits the minimal definition of RPG, but I really feel an RPG should have more customizable characters.

In my opinion Zelda games are Adventure games.

Hi there!

In the Adventure of Link, Link has HP, MP, learns spells, acquires items and learns new moves as the game progresses.  Is it an RPG?

No experience points - No RPG.

Greetings,

Manuel

Well if we're going to strip it down to its bare bones, a Role Playing Game is a game where you fancifully adopt the role of another fictional character. There aren't many games that aren't RPGs in that case :)

An RPG is a funny thing--most people know one on sight but no one

exactly seems to be able to agree on a definition. Some of the classic

pen and paper role-playing games lack some of the key elements

normally associated with RPG's. Call of Cthulhu has no experience points

or levels, for example.

I would say that in general, a CRPG is a "D&D-like game" with most

of the following elements:

One or more protagonist characters

An experience/level system

Visible character "stats"

Chance rather than skill-based combat

Exploration to solve quests or acquire wealth/experience/power

An overall plot with an defined ending

(usually) a magical fantasy setting

Some hybrid games contain most of these elements but clearly don't

"feel" like an RPG. For example, games with action-based combat like

Castelvania SOTN or the Zelda series don't qualify in my book. Other

games like Fallout or Planescape may deviate quite a bit from the CRPG

formula but seem (to me) clearly to be RPG's.

Ultimately it's an arbitrary distinction and the source of many fun but

ultimately pointless conversations.

"What do you mean Zork I isn't an RPG? You can fight the troll!"

Etc. etc.
