mario kart dd: too much unlocking

Recommended Posts

Dang it, Mario Kart Double Dash is another one of those primarily multiplayer games with way too much (one player, or MAYBE 2 player co-op) unlocking. Man, I hate that. F-Zero on the N64 did it right: let things be won fairly, or have a cheesy cheat that has to be done each time to open everything.

No.

It is perfect.

Not too much unlocking. You just need to beat races. That's it. If you want TOO MUCH unlocking, that's Super Smash Bros. Melee.

What is there to unlock besides new carts and the Special Cup? So far I have gold medals up through the 100cc Star Cup. 150cc races are a friggin' bitch but is there anything extra cool to unlock once you star racking up gold medals there too?

Too much unlocking? Oh boy, go play Vanishing Point and then tell me that Double Dash has too much unlocking

I had this whole game beat after a week or so. 150cc is pretty hard at first, but once you get to know the tracks and such, it actually gets fairly easy. If you're having trouble with the 150cc tracks, I'd recommend that you use the lighter characters with high accelleration, since I find that these tracks are a lot harder with the bigger karts. Pick Koopa Troopa and Paratroopa with the green Koopa Kart, and you'll get excellent special weapons too (although most of the time, I get hit with lightning half a second after I get three red shells... I wonder if the AI does this on purpose).

What is there to unlock besides new carts and the Special Cup?

There's also 4 secret characters, 13 secret karts (I think I have that number right), 2 extra battle mode tracks, mirror mode, all-cup tour, and new "thanks for playing" and title screens.

If you REALLY get bored with the challenge, you can always try to get the staff ghosts... I haven't even come anywhere close to them yet.

I'm really hoping that the Mario Kart 64 tracks are hidden in the game somewhere...

For some reason, beyond getting "Special Cup", the only thing I want is all the extra drivers...they're interesting in a way random karts aren't. Mirror mode might be nice, I guess, but "all cup mode" at 150 is really annoying.

I really wish they had invented a way of uploading/downloading save games, some 3rd party product...

Star Cup on 150cc.I hate it.A lot.

The game has not too much, and not too little, and it does ge ta little easier, when the AI isn't a whore.

We got everything in the game in about 2 weeks, so its not too bad.

Co-op mode can be really good for unlocking stuff. Using your back character as a side swiper and to make course corrections can work out pretty well, as long as you communicate on drift boosts well.

Yeah, the extra karts are kind of fluff... most of them are just repainted versions of karts you already have (With a few exceptions, like Waluigi and Baby Bowser's cars), and there's not a lot of variety in the stats... too many karts are equivalent. The last two karts you'll unlock are two of my favorites though.

The extra characters are good, although unlocking the last two are one of the last things you'll actually get, so it'll take you a while.

I got really into the single player mode, so I was very happy to get mirror mode and all-cup tour mode... I was actually able to get 1st place on all-cup tour mode in both 150cc and mirror mode on my first tries, which is damn good, since otherwise I would have had to break something :P

The extra two battle mode levels are nice too, since multiplayer is one of this game's strengths.

What really burns my ass is their cheapass "designated spoiler" strategy...if they would just spread the frickin' wealth around a little over the course of 16 games, it would be so annoying by half, but instead, you always have to beat the same damn pair.

Ehh, its battlemodes have never done much for me, in any rendition.

I wanted Special Cup to see what they did with the Rainbow Road this time. I have to say I'm impressed. The first one was too hard with no sides. Too plain. The second was too easy with wide roads and sides all the way around. THIS one really made up for that.

Yeah, but the Mario Kart games have always been like this unfortunately...If you play through an entire all-cup tour, by the end, there will be three karts (hopefully, you'll be one of them) with about 80-100 points, and everyone else will have less than 30.

However, I would argue that the game would likely be a LOT easier if this wasn't the case... maybe even too easy, because the points would be very spread around, and you might be able to easily take first place even if you never got higher than third on any track.

Well, I got it yesterday, the all-cup race @ 150, only about 4 or 5 false starts. Still, I do worry that I've become too close to 'game jesus' to do that.

heh - i very rarely play games to completion. I always seem to get bored with them after a while. But, with MK:DD, it grabbed me in hard. I was able to beat most of the game in a little less than a week -- the only thing I still haven't got is 100cc/150cc all cup mode and the mirror mode (do you get that for the 150cc all cup mode?), but I did manage to get the full 40pts on all the 50cc and 100cc tracks.

My only complaint is that it seems a bit easier than the other karts. After 2 years, I still haven't completely beat Mario Kart: Super Circuit, but then again, you can't see the screen unless you have a SP, and the SP's controls are too cramped for something like Mario Kart...
