bergbros2 #1 Posted December 9, 2003 I was perusing Digital Press's list for the top 20 Dreamcast games and I found it OK but it missed some real obvious ones. I figure AA posters can do better. The link can be found here: http://www.digitpress.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=1569 My personal top 20 (No particular order) based on personal game experience and general crititcal response (Yes it includes imports): Soul Calibur (of course) Dead or Alive 2 Street Figher 3 Alpha NBA 2K2 NFL 2K1 Crazy Taxi Rayman 3 Tony Hawk 2 Virtua Tennis Ikaruga Samba de Amigo Marvel v. Capcom 2 Unreal Tournament Quake 3 Phantasy Star Online Sonic Adventure Resident Evil: Code Name Veronica Shenmue II (Import) Bangai-O Skies of Arcadia I am sure I missing a few but you got to have show why one game is deserving of the top twent over others. I need a solid driving game to replace maybe Quake 3 or Street Fighter Alpha or Bangai-O. Still, the above list I think are must haves in any Dreamcast Collection. Xot #2 Posted December 9, 2003 Street FIghter Alpha 3 definately deserves to stay. Street Fighter 3: Third Strike also belongs on that list. I honestly can't think of any top notch racers on the DC, though. I'd also put Sega Marine Fishing on there too... not having played all those games, though, I don't know what I'd remove. ubersaurus #3 Posted December 9, 2003 I said it once and I'll say it again: Dreamcast SFA3 SUCKS ASS. Also, the DP list doesn't include imports, only domestic releases. If it did, you can be sure Border Down would be on there.
bergbros2 #4 Posted December 9, 2003 I heard some great things being talked about Border Down, but is it better than Ikaruga and Bangai-O? The price for the game right now is really high ($50). I think SFA3 has great replay even more than those Power Stone games (some people really get into these games some find them lacking). I wish I can sample Border Down before I can pass judgement on it.
ubersaurus #5 Posted December 9, 2003 SFA3 on dreamcast was a terrible port. I don't feel like getting into all the reasons, btu as far as a good version of alpha 3-its crap. Border Down is like 500 times better then Ikaruga. Never really got into bangai oh, but i think its better then that.
Ze_ro #6 Posted December 9, 2003 My top 20 list (in no specific order): Crazy Taxi Sonic Adventure Street Fighter Alpha 3 (sorry uber, but I still love it) Bomberman Online Soul Calibur San Francisco Rush 2049 Virtua Tennis Wild Metal Tony Hawk's Pro Skater 2 Rayman 2 Jet Grind Radio NHL 2K2 Unreal Tournament Record of Lodoss War Chu Chu Rocket Power Stone 2 Rez (Import) The Typing of the Dead Super Puzzle Fighter 2 X (Import) Border Down (Import) Oh, and I think Dead or Alive 2 is terrible. The graphics were nice, but the gameplay was complete shite as far as I'm concerned. I beat the game in about 5 minutes the first time I played it, and after I beat it with each character once, there was absolutely no reason for me to bother continuing. The storyline is almost non-existent (which certainly isn't helped by the badly translated dialog). The only thing that keeps it above Virtua Fighter 3tb are the great stages, and the virtual T&A.... hell, I think Fighting Vipers 2 was more run than DOA2. What is it that people see in the Dead or Alive games? [Edit: Took out Quake III in favor of Record of Lodoss War] --Zero
SteveW #7 Posted December 9, 2003 How anyone could ever say that Wild Metal is one of their favorite DC games without cracking up and saying "just kidding!" is beyond me........
GrizzLee #8 Posted December 9, 2003 Gotta have REZ and San Fransisco Rush 2049 on the list Ikaruga and Zero Gunner 2 have to make the list as well. -Lee
liveinabin #9 Posted December 9, 2003 Wierd that Powerstone 2 is in there when the original is way better
ubersaurus #10 Posted December 9, 2003 One must play Powerstone 2 with 3 other people to understand why that game was better then the original it's really a multiplayer game, and if you ask me, the best one on the dreamcast.
Ze_ro #11 Posted December 9, 2003 How anyone could ever say that Wild Metal is one of their favorite DC games without cracking up and saying "just kidding!" is beyond me........ Yeah, I know... I'm probably one of only a handful of people that actually like this game... but every time I try it, I end up getting sucked into it and play the entire game the entire way through. I've probably beaten the game about 5 times by now. I love tank games, and Wild Metal is the best tank game I've ever played. I really want to try Red Dog though. --Zero
Malix #12 Posted December 9, 2003 How come everyone always lists Tony Hawk 2 but not Dave Mira freestly BMX. Pretty much the same game but with a bike.
joeybastard #13 Posted December 9, 2003 I would add MDKII to the list also. I think it kicks ass.
bergbros2 #14 Posted December 10, 2003 Oh I knew I missed two obvious ones. Jet Grind Radio is a classic and deserves to be in there over Dead or Alive 2. MDK 2 is a great if hard game and deserves to be in there over Street Fighter Alpha 3. I have to look at Border Down, but if it is as people suggest, it would replace Ikaruga. Rez I have not played either. These imports can only be found on the net and they command a premium.
bergbros2 #15 Posted December 10, 2003 Oh, most of the other choices are good, but the top 20 has to be the best of the best, a game you wouldn't hesitate to get. Some games get talked up to death but are let downs. Metropolitan Street Racer comes to mind. What about Tokyo Xtreme Racer 2 and Ferrari Challenge and Test Drive Le Mans? Do any of these racers deserve to be up there? How about Grandia II?

It's the only home port available of that game, and its an excellent game, and a very good port.

As for the top 20 list. I don't have 20, but some of my favs are; Evolution 2: Far off promise Tee Off Golf Crazy Taxi II Virtua Cop II D2 Shenume DOA 2 Chu Chu Rocket 4x4 Evo Ooga Booga Toy Commander
moycon #18 Posted December 10, 2003 A few of my favorite games on Dreamcast that havent been mentioned. Gauntlet Legends Shadow Man Omikron
Ze_ro #19 Posted December 10, 2003 What about Tokyo Xtreme Racer 2 and Ferrari Challenge and Test Drive Le Mans? How about Grandia II? I thought both Tokyo Extreme Racer games were very boring... considering the number of great racing games for the Dreamcast, I certainly wouldn't put them in a top 20 list. I've heard lots of good things about Le Mans, but I haven't tried it yet. Grandia II was very good... although I'm not much of a fan of japanese style RPG's, I spent quite a bit of time with this game. Good combat system too. I can't believe I forgot to include Record of Lodoss War! This was (by a wide margin) the best RPG I've played since the C64. Man, I guess I'll have to go take out Quake III from my initial post. --Zero
liveinabin #20 Posted December 10, 2003 I loved the DC version of Hydro Thunder as well. Great game, even if it didn't really make use of the 'home' format, being JUST the arcade game.
Foxy Cleopatra #21 Posted December 10, 2003 My Top 20 DC games: Jet Grind Radio Shenmue Sonic Adventure 1 Omikron Space Channel 5 Stupid Invaders Revolt- this game was awesome! So much fun Bangai-O Expendable Alone in the Dark: The New Nightmare Dynamite Cop Ms. Pac-Man Maze Madness Worms: World Party/Armageddon Slave Zero Bust-A-Move 4 Crazy Taxi Gigawing Mars Matrix San Fran Rush 2049 Sword of the Berzerk And Honorable mentions go to: Draconus Frogger 2: (this was such a cute little game) Sega Bass Fishing- with the fishing controller Walt Disney Magical Racing something or other Max Steel (suprisingly good game) Nightmare Creatures
bergbros2 #22 Posted December 11, 2003 I found some reviews concerning Border Down for your review and comment: http://www.metacritic.com/games/platforms/...ast/borderdown/ They are not particularly glowing reviews and it gives me pause, especially considering the high price. I also found some reviews for Rez which are extremely positive: http://www.metacritic.com/games/platforms/.../dreamcast/rez/ It seems that Rez is a pretty original game, one that I might be interested in. What is it about Omikron that makes it a good game? I never really got into it that much and it certainly didn't get high marks.
ubersaurus #23 Posted December 11, 2003 Bah, screw those reviews...Border Down is a ton of fun. Way better then the overrated Ikaruga. I like the break laser system, and the "combos" you can do with that. Plus the border system was sweet, the music had some really cool tracks, and all in all it was a first class title. Those reviews obviously didn't play the game much, its really good.
Ze_ro #24 Posted December 11, 2003 It seems that Rez is a pretty original game, one that I might be interested in. Rez is one of those games that you'll either think is amazing and revolutionary... or you'll think it's completely overrated. I love the game personally, but not everyone does. I don't think there's many people out there that actually hate the game though... they usually just think of it as a wireframe Space Harrier ripoff. --Zero
