chairmonkey4406 #1 Posted December 14, 2003 Do you hold it like the guys in the first Activision catalog (thumb on top of the stick) or do you grip the whole thing with your entire hand? Perhaps you simply make your hand a ball and grip the top of the joystick? For me its the latter. It's just the most comfortable.

ApolloBoy #7 Posted December 14, 2003 Usually I wrap some of my fingers around the stick, but I sometimes use all my fingers.
Albert #8 Posted December 14, 2003 Here's the picture from the catalog, I can't imagine that being very comfortable, I think the photographer made them pose for the camera in that fashion. ..Al
Nukey Shay #9 Posted December 14, 2003 I let my right hand gently blanket the top of the base, and grip the root of the shaft by wrapping it between the lower knuckles of thumb and index finger...and let them fluidly take control of the action. My left hand is free to cradle the underside of the base, using the thumb to alternate between light and hard presses to control shooting. I find this helps in endurance sessions. Fingering the top of the shaft is a sure way to lead to game over quickly.

Nukey Shay #11 Posted December 14, 2003 That's why I humoured him. But it IS how I hold the Atari stick. I have to admit, the Slik Stik (while much shorter) is more comfortable (it's that blasted rubber on the Atari stick ) And I just place the palm of my right hand completely over the top of it, resting the tip right in the center of my hand. Why does everyone laugh when I say that? They ARE after me lucky charms!

+Nathan Strum #15 Posted December 14, 2003 Thumb on top. But I found that wasn't very comfortable, so I shortened the joystick by about an inch. It's easier to show it than explain it: The end result is a very responsive thumb-stick. Almost like a game pad, but better. I think I shortened it a little at a time until I got the height right. It works great - highly recommended if you have a spare joystick sitting around (or a spare repair parts kit).
Famicoman #16 Posted December 14, 2003 I have this thing called a GEM GRIP which is like a ball designed esspecially for the joy stick, so I put my hand around the ball.

foxglove9 #18 Posted December 14, 2003 I usually hold the stick at it's base and rest it between my thumb and forefinger, my left hand I hold the bottom with and use my thumb for the fire button. The one thing about Atari Joysticks I remember is they broke so easily. I must have went through about 5 or 6 of them easily. It got so bad my dad started buying parts so he could repair the sticks for me. Other than maybe 1 colecovision controller in my history of gaming I've never had a broken controller. NovaXpress #20 Posted December 14, 2003 I actually held the 2600 stick like the do in the Activision pic, only with the button on the upper right side, so my thumb pressed left in order to move up. I used a very light touch, so my personal stick fully thrives to this day. The ones used by friends broke annually.

Mindfield #23 Posted December 14, 2003 It, um ... depends on the stick. First-gen Atari sticks get the thumb on top. Later sticks I found more stiff, so I use the stick between the knuckle of my index and middle fingers and my thumb. Occasionally, with particularily stiff sticks, I'll just grip it. vb_master #24 Posted December 14, 2003 has anyone tryed to hack the controller by putting a push buttin instead of the spring and dome? I imagine that would feel better I grab the stick part and use my thumb, I usually do that when i'm frustrated though
Goochman #25 Posted December 14, 2003 I use a Wico, so I need 2 hands to work that baby. Good thing the fire mechanism is at the top of the shaft since with 2 hands holding it leaves no time for the circular buttons at the base
