Susuwatari #26 Posted December 14, 2003 I used joystick with a big ball called Grabber attached to it. Plays a lot like arcade stick.
+uosipa llamxew #27 Posted December 14, 2003 I shortened the joystick by about an inch. I was sure someone was going to respond by saying that usually joystick mods are to lengthen the stick... That mod looks awesome! Does anyone sell anything similar? I'd give it a shot, but I only have a steak knife to cut through the white joystick plastic. That wouldn't be very fun - me thinks. +Nathan Strum #28 Posted December 15, 2003 I was sure someone was going to respond by saying that usually joystick mods are to lengthen the stick... So was I. And I'm not sure if I'm disappointed or not that they didn't. That mod looks awesome! Does anyone sell anything similar? I'd give it a shot, but I only have a steak knife to cut through the white joystick plastic. That wouldn't be very fun - me thinks. I think all I used was a utility knife. Just a couple bucks at any hardware store. It's pretty soft plastic (waiting for more jokes...).
RCmodeler #29 Posted December 15, 2003 I hold my joystick the same as the Activision guys, except I wrap my right hand around the stick. I get better "feeling" that way.
Adrian M #30 Posted December 15, 2003 I use only the standard CX-40 joysticks, and I hold it in this manner: *the base of the joystick is held in my left hand. My left thumb is on the fire button. *I use my right hand's thumb, index and middle finger to hold and maneuver the actual stick. My ring finger and pinky are not used at all...I simply tuck them so that they rest in the palm of my right hand. That's how I've always used these joysticks and I suspect this is how I'll always use them!
Csonicgo #31 Posted December 16, 2003 I hold it like a pencil.....
Susuwatari #32 Posted December 16, 2003 I hold it like a pencil..... I never knew anyone could hold a joystick that way. Is there an invisible hand that handles the fire button?
Csonicgo #33 Posted December 16, 2003 I have two hands. I usually put the base in my left hand, and push the fire button tith my left thumb
Big Player #34 Posted December 16, 2003 At home I use this WICO joystick. I'm not sure but I think it's called a WICO Soft Joystick. (Put your own joke here.) I never really thought about how I hold the joystick. I do think it differs depending on what type of game I'm playing. Here's a picture of me playing Starfire in Austin and it looks like I'm using some variant of the Activision grip.

+Random Terrain #36 Posted December 16, 2003 Whenever I drag out my Atari 2600, I usually use one of those plastic bases with the rubber feet, stick a classic Atari joystick in it, set it on a table, and play like I'm at the arcade, but I never put my thumb on top like those Activision models. Many models/actors back then held the joystick in all kinds of strange ways since they probably didn't even know what an Atari was. The only things I use my thumbs on are joypads made since the old Nintendo came out. I have an Xbox now and I'm still using my thumbs. I used to think I would always like using the old Atari joysticks, but as time goes on, they aren't as much fun to use anymore.
ussexplorer #37 Posted December 16, 2003 I hold my Big Red with the litte white "BUTTON" on top with my hole hand and then sometimes depending on the game I'll touch if lightly and move it side to side. Oh, wait does a wico count? For my atari stick I prey it isn' stiff so I can control the game with different hand positions from a complete grip to a small grip just like the wico. Laters.... BassGuitari #38 Posted December 16, 2003 I always use an Atari joystick, and I use it similarly like is shown on the original Video Computer System advertisements (on a table: left index finger presses fire button, stick pinched between inside of right thumb and inside of right index finger). The MilkMan #39 Posted December 16, 2003 I wonder if this thread was started after my recent post of my Christmas pic thread.I'm the kid in the pic holding the joystick with some kind of crazy death grip. I have since then matured, and developed a respectable joystick grip. http://www.atariage.com/forums/viewtopic.php?t=39869

SS #42 Posted December 18, 2003 it looks like I'm using some variant of the Activision grip. Gentlemen, I propose that from here on we officially term the "thumb on top of stick" technique or similar variants thereof the Activision grip.
