Fres #1 Posted December 15, 2003 I'm sure some of you have discussed this at some point, but I'm trying to clarify something for myself. Is "prelimiary monty 16k" a complete game? I've only completed the 1st level (for the last 20 years). I've never taken it any further. Also, the Montezuma's Revenge image with the title screen, the "dating game" music at the beginning, the lousy controls, and the ambient "bud dup bud dup" whilst playing -- is this a complete game? Which one is better for you? For me, Montezuma's Revenge is one of the best games ever for the 8-bit Atari, but what form did it take (if any) as a final release? +davidcalgary29 #2 Posted December 15, 2003 I have the lab loaner (or "limited release cartridge", or whatever it is), and always thought it was complete, but will have to check again. I'm sure I've made it past the first level, in any case. And I don't think my copy has a version of "Spanish Flea" playing at the title screen. It does have "The Mexican Hat Dance", though. Randy California #3 Posted December 16, 2003 AFAIK, the version with title screen was meant as the original game from Utopia Software. The "Preliminary Monty" was probably the result of PB approaching the author and asking for a 16K cartridge version of the game... which was never released. The final version made it to disk in the US (courtesy of PB) and tape/disk in the UK (Databyte). There's also a rare re-issue by BCI Software. ++ RC ++
Goochman #4 Posted December 16, 2003 I dont think this game has an ending though. Ive gotten to the 'big guy stomping' but there is no way to eliminate him - DOes the 16K version do the same as the consoles where you get a new maze with icnreasing difficulty? devwebcl #5 Posted December 16, 2003 FYI From: Jack H. Lee ([email protected]) Subject: Re: Montezuma's Revenge, what's the point? Newsgroups: comp.sys.atari.8bit View: Complete Thread (4 articles) | Original Format Date: 2000/05/04 Thomas Richter ([email protected]) wrote: : Hi folks, : yesterday, I played again some of the old 8 bit classics and tried again : the "Montezuma's Revenge" title. I managed it up to a room where : I met "Montezuma", stomping with his foot. Two doors beside his head, one : at the left side and one at the right side, a grey and a blue one. I : opened both doors but --- nothing. Is there any specific point about : this game, or is this supposed to be the "I win" situation? I think the game was never completed the way it was meant to be. If you recall, Utopia Software displayed the game (probably a work-in-progress) at some convention show, and it caught the eyes of Parker Bros. They bought the rights to the game, re-wrote it (making the character more like Indiana Jones, to boot) and you could win once you reached the secret door. It's been so long since I played that original version. But there is a neat trick, which I forgot how to do. When you get to the screen where the guy stomps, if you place Pedro at a certain point in the screen and jump, you will be able to enter the inventory section. This is where you can get extra swords or keys (providing you have at least one in the inventory). Then you jump away from the inventory box and get to kill more creatures for points. But that was as far as it would go, really. You could kill everything off and it still wouldn't get you any closer to a real finish. Anyway, you don't want to be fully in the inventory box. When you jump correctly, he will be halfway in there. If you jump up, you will be inside the box, and it will cause a real no-win situation. When you run out of time and the bat takes you away, you wind up back in the box, trapped! The trick is to jump to the left, so you wind back in the playing field. Fres #6 Posted December 16, 2003 Anyone know which version came with the PC game Montezuma's Return? It was advertised to include the original game as well as the 3D remake for PC.
