~llama #1 Posted December 21, 2003 I was setting up my SNES last night and i found (you guessed it) an expansion port on the bottom... what in the world was this for? i looked and i dont think its on the Rev. 2 SNES (the small one) so... was anything released for this? CPUWIZ #2 Posted December 21, 2003 The PS-X (SNES CD-addon) was supposed to be hooked up to that but it never came out because of a battle between Sony and Nintendo. Yes you heard that right, the PSX is the SNES CD addon and not the PlayStation, which is why Sony employees were not allowed to call the PlayStation PSX. Nukey Shay #3 Posted December 21, 2003 Hm...but isn't the next gen. supposedly going to be called that?
Classic Pac #4 Posted December 21, 2003 I have plunty of EGMs which called it a SNES add-on. The designs where weird compared to what it became. One even had a cartridge slot.
MegaManFan #5 Posted December 21, 2003 If you look at my photos from the Classic Gaming Expo 2002, you'll see what it's like. It plugged into the SNES cart slot and hung over the back - it had a couple of "kick stands" to support it because of the size.
Nukey Shay #6 Posted December 21, 2003 Don't you have a PSX prototype CPUWIZ? I thought there was an older thread around here someplace...
CPUWIZ #7 Posted December 21, 2003 Don't you have a PSX prototype CPUWIZ? I thought there was an older thread around here someplace... I have the programming docs and a prototype controller but never got my hands on the actual hardware. They were messing with it so much, first it was supposed to be underneith and then they tried the cart slot version (like MMF mentioned) and then they shitcanned it because of the battle between Sony and the big N. Ze_ro #8 Posted December 22, 2003 Ah, there are plenty of systems out there with expansion ports that were never really used. The 7800 had one initially, and it was never used. --Zero
~llama #9 Posted December 22, 2003 whoa! cool, i never knew anything about that... any good links to pictures of it? im glad you guys knew what it was...
JB #10 Posted December 22, 2003 Hm...but isn't the next gen. supposedly going to be called that? No. The PSX that exists now is a home entertainment device that happens to play PS2 games. Anyways, the expansion port was put there because it was the thing to do. And in Japan, the reciever for the Satellaview service hooked up to it. Ze_ro #11 Posted December 22, 2003 Hm...but isn't the next gen. supposedly going to be called that? No. The PSX that exists now is a home entertainment device that happens to play PS2 games. Yeah, but I think that CPUWIZ's point was that they couldn't use the PSX name due to copyright or trademark reasons. Those reasons would certainly still apply to their new machine. --Zero
Happy_Dude #12 Posted December 22, 2003 wasn't there a Disk drive for the SNES (Super Famicom) ? like the ones for the NES & N64 ?

JB #16 Posted December 22, 2003 wasn't there a Disk drive for the SNES (Super Famicom) ?like the ones for the NES & N64 ? No. ... Well, unless you mean one of the various 3rd-party game copiers that dumped the games out to floppy disks. But those aren't really the same thing. MegaManFan #17 Posted December 23, 2003 Anybody got pictures of software running on the PSX prototype? I wish. Jerry said one of the games was an unreleased Disney title and due to copyright reasons it would/could never be publically exhibited.
