tjlazah #1 Posted December 24, 2003 If anyone is interested: I just upgraded my TT030 with a 1.44MB HD drive! I got a used Epson SMD-300 and swapped out my old tired Epson SMD-380 720kb drive. Set dip #7 on MB and all was a go! I have TOS 3.06. I had to set DS0 on the floppy.

It is interesting, my TT comes with HD drive installed already and all TT which are floating around me are the same.
+Sauron #3 Posted December 24, 2003 I think I remember hearing that some of the first TT's released had double density drives. tjlazah, did yours by any chance originally come with a 16Mhz 68030?
tjlazah #4 Posted December 28, 2003 My TT030 has a 32MHz 030 and TOS 3.06. Not sure if the 720k Drive was original or not. I got this used recently and refurbished it. It was in bad shape. It looks NEW now!
jens #5 Posted December 28, 2003 I think I remember hearing that some of the first TT's released had double density drives. I think it wasn't just some. The first atari computer to have standard hd-floppy-controller was the Falcon. TT and MegaSte had the possibility to use hd floppies, later ones come shipped with them. tjlazah #6 Posted December 29, 2003 I looked in my TT030 manual, which is the USA one and it does not mention a HD drive. It mentions 720k and 360k formats. It also mentions the 68030 at 32MHz. So maybe all US TT030s came with 720k drives only? It was painless to upgrade anyhow so maybe they just released then with 720k until they ran out of stock, then used HD drives. atarian1 #7 Posted December 29, 2003 That's weird. Your TT030 came equipped with an AJAX chip yet only came with a 720K disk drive?! Ok. That Atari is really wierd... (In case you don't know, the AJAX chip is the Atari disk controller chip that supports high density disk drives. They only came with later MegaSTEs and TT030s as far as I know. And they were available as an upgrade to MegaSTE/TT030 owners too.)
+Sauron #8 Posted December 29, 2003 It was my understanding that all TT030s that were made after a certain date had 1.44MB drives. A friend of mine back in the day had his TT030 come brand new with a 1.44MB, and this was in late '92, IIRC.

BTW Ajax can handle ED floppy drive. Have somebody such drive installed? I have not seen ED yet.
