Crimson Skies , via Wing Commander

Recommended Posts

I got Crimson Skies for Christmas.

Only a few missions into it, but it's a very nice game. I was realizing that what it reminds me a lot of is the oldschool Wing Commander game... both are WWI/WWII influenced, have simplified control systems but you still need to lead your target, both have a storyline, and a variety of planes.

Though I'd love to see the original Wing Commander w/ really up to date graphics and a similar touch on the story line, that would be pretty amazing...go back to the original story of the Kilrathi War....

I greatly enjoyed the original Crimson Skies for PC, and I'm sure that once I get an Xbox (eventually) the new Crimson Skies will be one of the first games I buy for it.

As far as Wing Commander is concerned, it would be good to see a new one (or an update), but the space sim genre isn't exactly a big seller anymore, so the chances of seeing one aren't too good. However, maybe if enough gamers give Crimson Skies a chance it may rekindle interest in the "sim-lite" genre.

Personally, if I ever saw a new chapter in the Freespace (a series of PC space sims inspired by Wing Commander) series appear on the Xbox that would probably be reason enough for me to go out and buy one, but since Interplay is almost dead I don't have any hope in seeing that franchise revived.

Oh, I meant to mention that other similarities include a variety of weapons, heavy use of 'turbo', and the idea of flying 'home bases' that sometimes you have to defend...

Oh yeah, I forgot about that one.....I've gotten out of PC gaming.

You'd think Wing Commander would still have some power behind the name--it produced a major motion picture after all, albeit a bad one.

What was that one on DC? Starlancer? Something lke that, with a 'cold war in space' theme? That had some really frustratingly difficult levels.

Right, StarLancer was a DC game. Actually, it was also on the PC as well (along with Bang! Gunship Elite, which was much simpler). The similarities between StarLancer and Wing Commander were, of course, due to the Roberts brothers' involvement in the game (I think Chris' brother Erin was the lead designer, though my instruction manual for StarLancer doesn't say).

I've been thinking about getting out of PC gaming, myself. There just haven't been enough good PC-only titles lately to justify the cost of keeping up. Unless you want to play bug-ridden slop like Mistmare and those "budget" games.
