Go look at page 22 of that last link I posted. It tells the whole "Theory of operation" of the vector display.

Is that part of the reasons why Tempest machines break down alot as well?

Tempest just abuses the hell out of the display. As I understand it, the level zoom does a LOT of off-screen drawing, which you aren't supposed to do.

I thought about making a PCI card for driving a vector monitor. It would be fun to experiment with.
