does anyone here own a portable for the 2600?

You mean a portable 2600? Kind of, it doesn't have a screen though. It is pretty small, (about the size of a couple DVD cases piled) with a built in controller and paddle, but no batteries or screen.

I've got a portable, but I haven't finished the case yet, so it's a pain with all of the wires and switches, making sure nothing shorts out.

You don't go to the VCSp forums, do you? When you are done you really should post a couple of pictures. One member, Abbibi, has a site for the members (second link in signature) and I think he would like it if you sent a pic or 2 to him: even if you aren't done, he has a status page.

I check that site regularly, but I don't get involved too much. I got tired of answering simple questions about electricity and electronics. I still keep an eye out for any Atari 2600 questions, though.
