Yie Ar Kung-Fu now on the ColecoVision...

Recommended Posts

Hi!

I have started to work on my next ColecoVision ports, Yie Ar Kung-Fu I and II. Both were released for the MSX computers back in 1985. Interestingly the first game was released even before the famous coin operated game, so they aren't a direct arcade port but instead they started the series! Later, Konami ported the first MSX game for the Famicom, but the second one stayed as a MSX exclusive... till now.

YAKF II uses twice times as much memory as the first game, so I decided to start porting it.

Here is a list of features:

YAKF I -

5 enemies

1 scenary

1 bonus stage

YAKF II

8 enemies

4 scenaries

hidden bonuses

versus mode

Bellow are pictures of the second game.... These will be probably my last MSX ports for a while.

Awesome! I can't wait.

BTW what happened to that other game you were porting? Sky Lancer or something like that.

I have already completed 3 games: Sky Jaguar, Ping-Pong and Magical Tree. I hope to released them in the near future, but right now I don't have a precise date yet...

Ever thought about proting the MSX version of Mappy to the Coleco?

Are any of these going to be available at PC5?  I need these games!

I second that - I'd like to be able to buy these games at PC5 if possible! :D

And I would love to have them available at PC5, but Dale is still working on printed stuff I am not completely sure if we will be able to have things finished in time. Anyway the games will be playable there, you can bet. :)

I talked a little about Magical Tree here (including pictures):

There are many nice Namco games never released for classic machines, like Rally-X, Bosconian and Mappy, but I would prefer to base my port on real arcade code instead using the existing MSX versions.... ;)

So these are actually ports of the MSX versions? I knew the MSX ran on a Z80, but I didn't realize the hardware was similar enough to really do this. Is there a lot of work involved?

The VDP chip is the same, but memory mapping, sound, BIOS routines, controllers, etc are all differents. So the work is a bit easier than porting an arcade game, but still challenging (as several friends of mine tried but failed). So far I have chosen games which requires just 1KB of RAM (the same as the CV). But YAKF II uses more, so it will be an even more interesting project... :)

Cool, it looks great. It's too bad Coleco didn't have someone like you back in the day... perhaps they would have survived the crash. The ColecoVision could have used a game like Yie Ar Kung-Fu.

I really wish I had more disposable income to buy some of these homebrews... :(
