Nintendo Puzzle Collection

Recommended Posts

Dang it, when is Nintendo releasing the Nintendo Puzzle Collection?

And please, Nintendo...make it Tetris Attack proper, not Panel de Pon. That things as gay as a french horn. I mean, I'd still probably play it, since I'm stick of dragging around an SNES just for that game, but still... that goes beyond "Japanese Cute" into "My Little Pony" land...

I thought this had already been released in Japan, and probably wasn't making it to North America?

Yeah, released in Japan, and IGN lists it as "TBA 2004".

I can't see why they wouldn't release it stateside. Easy money, just a little bit of localization. A little more cost if they want to make it Tetris Attack and not Panel de Pon. (Heh, random theory: maybe they want to make it Tetris Attack but now there's something weird with the name "Tetris" (which was always kind of a gimmick anyway))

3 or 4 player Tetris Attack would be GREAT.

http://cube.ign.com/articles/434/434873p2.html says: Though there is still no release date for the US version of this GameCube classics compilation, European gamers can look forward to playing Dr. Mario, Panel De Pon and Yoshi's Cookie in the first half of next year. While Dr. Mario is worth the budgeted price of admission alone, the three classics come packed with a GBA download option that let gamers enjoy the titles on the go as well as on the big screen.

Course, Panel de Pon is like 5 times better than Dr. Mario anyway, but whatever.

The problem with releasing a game like this is that it's not very impressive to consumers and magazines and such. They certainly can't expect people to pay the same amount for a game like this that they would for Legend of Zelda or Mario Sunshine. The North American market is very fickle and pre-occupied with graphics and presentation.

Frankly, I'm surprised Nintendo had the balls to release Dr. Mario 64 here.

Wait. How does that work? The GBA would have to store it somehow. What does it get stored in? That's a cool idea! But I don't see how it's done.

That's why you give like 3 games for $30 or whatever. Wasn't Dr Mario 64 a bit cheaper than usual?

Pokemon Puzzle League / Tetris Attack has a pretty solid fanboy following, and Dr.Mario a more general one.

Though I'm surprised the didn't throw in some others, like Mario Picross or Wario's Woods.

You can already do this. Nintendo sold a demo disc for a while, and in addition to Gamecube demos of games like Viewtiful Joe, it also had a demo version of Wario Ware that could be downloaded to the GBA and a full version of Dr. Mario that could also be downloaded. You have to connect the GBA to the Gamecube with the cable to download them of course, and the game will be lost once you turn the GBA off.

Yeah, it was... but I was more concerned about the "wow" factor (or rather, lack thereof) for such a release. People see rather simple puzzle games and think "I paid $100 for a Gamecube so that I could play NES games??". This kind of a response was pretty common for Dr. Mario 64 as well. The N64 was already going out of style at the time, so it wasn't a big deal I guess.

Even if they sell this game at a discounted price, there's still tons of other games that are already available at a discounted price, and are a lot more attractive to the average North American Joe.

I'm not saying it would fail, or that it would be a bad idea (heck, I'd love to get this too), I'm just trying to think like Nintendo's marketing division.

They can do better than only putting 3 puzzle games on it. Color me unimpressed.

Yeah. Not even a Tetris. I know, Tetris has been DONE, but that is one game I would like to see on there.

I do like Tetris Attack, but the whole animé theme of this version doesn't make me want it. Still...

Too bad there's no Puyo Puyo on there too. Then it'd be a nice collection of puzzle games that I'd want to buy.

That's a good idea too. Nintendo doesn't listen. Sad, really.

Maybe for $20 I'd want it. And if they put out a second volume with the other three games, (Tetris, Wario's Woods and Puyo Puyo - I know, not really a Nintendo creation, but it's worth it.) I'd buy that too. They're my favorite puzzle games. I like puzzle games.

Yeah, guess I'll still be carrying aroun an SNES for Tetris Attack. Uses the same AV cable as the GC at least.

I guess maybe that's how the marketing dep't is thinking, but it's so stupid...people know puzzle games don't need huge wow graphics, and also that Nintendo is the console to go to if you want a company that knows how to utilize its old school roots....

It would be cool to see Nintendo team up with Sega on a puzzle compilation... It would be weird to see one player playing Yoshi, and the other playing Dr. Robotnik's Mean Bean Machine on the other side of the screen. You could also stick stuff like Columns and Yoshi's Cookie in there. Maybe even fit Chu Chu Rocket in somehow.

Now THAT is a cool idea. Too bad it'll never come to be.

I played Chu Chu once sadly and didn't understand it at all. I forgot to even check the instructions and put it aside to try Space Channel 5. I really gotta try it again. Maybe tonight after work I'll sit down and do some Chu.

Tetris

Tetris Attack

Dr. Mario

Wario's Woods

Yoshi's Cookie

Yoshi

Robotnik's Bean Machine

Chu Chu Rocket

Columns

That would be a compilation worth getting!
