A large portion of the book is dedicated to Richard Garriott, the author of the Ultima series. I also recommend reading 'Masters of Doom' - a GREAT read about two of the more interesting (IMO) programmers of our time (Carmack and Romero) and their rise to fame with id Software and beyond. Carmack and Romero are also cover in Dungeons And Dreamers. Carmack talks about how he used to disassemble the Ultima code to see how it works. I'm slightly past a quarter into Dungeons & Dreamers - it's interesting to note the differences in some of the 'facts' around the Doom story (Carmack & Romero) - events get described differently between the two books - I wonder which 'version' is the most correct... The forums are especially interesting. You'll find John himself posting all over the place in topics ranging from his reaction/thoughts to Masters of Doom all the way to his tips on how to program for the Apple ][!
