better as a DVD: Xbox or PS2?

Recommended Posts

Which makes a better DVD player? PS2 or Xbox?

I'm leaning towards Xbox, though I guess I would need a kit...PS2 lets me limp along with a conroller but it's not fun.

Any thoughts?

Even though I own both consoles, I've only used the PS2 as a dvd player.

I also own 3 stand alone dvd players, so I don't use the PS2 very often.

But, from my experiences, I hate the PS2 as a dvd player.... Some movies skip, while other don't play at all...

Never used the Xbox as a dvd player, so I can't fairly comment on that ...

I’ve heard that the XBox makes for a slightly better DVD player than the PS2 does but I don’t own one myself so I can’t say for 100%.

That said, I use my PS2 as the only DVD player in my bedroom and can’t say that I’ve had any real complaints with it. It’s certainly “no frills” but it does an adequate enough job IMHO. Plus, using the controller as a remote nostalgically reminds me of days gone by with my 1st VCR and it’s old-school corded remote. :D

We had this same topic running about 6 months ago (ish) and I think we concluded that both make crap DVD players but the Xbox was very slightly better than the PS2.

DVD players are so cheap now why would you bother using the console?

Space. With eight consoles hooked to my bedroom TV there's little room to fit much else in.

oh you still sleeping in the horizontal position? - if you were really hardcore you'd learn to sleep upright or not sleep at all. That will give you more room for more toys ;) :D

the picture seemed a little better on the PS2, however, its likely to skip or freeze every once in a while. The X-box doesn't look as good as the PS2, but the movies dont flaw

one thing to note.. is that unless you got that rare xbox, neither of them will play your VCD's, SVCD's, mp3 cds or picture cds etc. A good standalone will however.

whats a "rare" xbox?

Well I guess I wouldn't say outright "rare".. maybe just because I have yet to see one :) Basically I'm talking about the Xbox's with the Samsung drive. Reference this recent thread

and this post in particular:

Oh and if I didn't answer the question before... if I had to choose between the xbox or ps2 to play dvd's. itd be the Xbox.

30 dollar apex is the best. I've gone through 4 DVD players and my Apex has outlasted all of them. And these weren't cheapy DVD players either. Apex can play MP3s, MPGs, SVCD, VCDS, JPGS. The only drawback is that there's no optical out, but they might have changed that

Well, I have newer version of PS2 console DOES have built in IR reciever for remote control, so you dont need to worry to use controller anymore! Not need require to have kits for PS2, but for an older version of PS2 console need to get kits.

I did watched so many DVD movies on my PS2 console, none any skip or freeze. :)

I've heard that both x-Box and PS2 have compatibility issues with some DVDs. Is this true? Is there a list somewhere?

I've got a launch week PS2 and haven't had a lick of trouble with any DVD that I've tried.

I bought a boot legged scarface dvd a while back and it played in all the heavy duty dvd players except when it came to the consoles. They are very protective

I also have a launch PS2 that is very, very picky about playing movies all the way through. I find if a movie skips a lot on the PS2, when I move it to the XBox it works fine. I've only had one problem playing a DVD on the XBox, and it was badly damaged.

Mine is very sensitive to fingerprints on DVDs.

Unlike most on this thread, I've had frequent DVD compatibility problems with the X-Box. I think that out of my library of DVDs there are 6-10 that WILL NOT play on the X-Box. The main one I remember off the top of my head is Carrie 2. When the X-Box fails to work with a DVD there are two options, it either doesn't recognize the disc as a valid one, or it repeats a scene indefinitely.

On the other hand, the X-Box has a nifty zoom feature. That's about the only thing it has going over the PS2 in terms of DVD playback.

The PS2 has failed to properly play precisely 2 DVDs that I've seen. The first one is a anime DVD from Pioneer named Moldiver. The second is the well known Tron Special Edition disc (which is an inconvenience more than anything else).

Picture quality is slightly better on the X-Box.

I've also been through several X-Boxes, because they keep on breaking down in various ways. I don't have much faith in the console.

But I don't use my consoles for DVD playback much anymore. I have a dedicated 5 disc changer for that.

If I ever use a system as a DVD player I use Xbox. With PS2 I have to jack the sound up to damn high just to get sound out of it. What movies I have played, it seems that my PS2 won't play about a 1/4 of them. While I haven't had a problem with my Xbox. Plus I like the DVD remote better on Xbox, its just the the RCA remotes I use on my different stuff. PS2 DVD remote, I don't like, and I don't know why. Using the controller is a pain in the ass, I can never remember what does what.
