I didn't even think the emulators where good enough yet. Though I haven't tried them yet. I'm sure that auction will be gone very soon.

How lazy are people, that they'd rather buy a pre-burned copy of an emulator with ROMs than spend a small amount of time downloading it? From looking at the amount of bids, i'd guess NO ONE. The seller needs a good, hard smack.

The seller needs a good, hard smack.

Assuming that the number of bids stays at zero, that would be as good a smackdown as any.

*Sigh.* Maybe it's time to put the standard disclaimer into VJ that I had at the top of Thunder:

This emulator is freeware. It you paid for it YOU WERE RIPPED OFF.

Perhaps you should also include one saying that ROM images are copyright and owning roms which you do not own the cartridge/cd for is illegal, and most specifically list the games which are still on sale from their copyright owners (as they're more likely to object).

And so it begins...

I think its somewhat missing the point to protest that the emulator is freeware and someone is trying to sell it, when the main problem here is piracy.

At the risk of sounding bitter.

This is the opening of the floodgates.

This is the start of the washing away of any chance of development on the Jaguar.

Simply put i don't believe that the Jaguar community is large enough to support both original machines and emulators.

There may be a tight group of dedicated fans but if there's not enough to buy suffiecient copies of a game/hardware product/whatever to make it viable to produce (at least to get back production costs)...

It seems as though the community is shrinking anyhow, and if a section of what remains goes to use emulators too...

Then there will be NO MORE development. Certainly not of anything of any depth.

And i really think that the emulation is rocketing us towards that scenario.

If there's an emulator, people WILL exchange ROMS.

What are people going to do?

Are they going to download the game as shareware?

Riiiiiiiigggggghhhhhttt cause shareware is SUCH a successful idea

Its a nice idea, but it never happens.

Even if its just £5 for registration, people never do.

For all i can see, if the code is available in an easy format to use with an emulator, then it will be easy to exchange and apart from the 10 people who will want proper copies all the rest will spread like wildfire.

Ok, production of a game is more viable with the emulator, since it doesn't cost very much to make it available, but why develop something to simply be pirated into oblivion.

Now maybe thats OK.

Maybe people won't mind writing an essentially free game.

I guess i'm just not altruistic enough to find that a remotely enticing idea. :(

-

Somebody will probably say that its not the fault of the emulators...

Guns don't kill people, people kill people, etc

But thats a lame ass arguement, guns sure make it a WHOLE lot easier, as emulators simplify piracy.

-

This is NOT the 2600, there are a lot less of us and a Jag game is a whole lot bigger.

I wish people would think about the damage this will do.

But i know they won't.

I'm totally with Atari Owl here... I think the emu developers should deliberatly introduce a bug that allows games to be locked out of running on an emu if the developer wished it, but since at least one emu is open source that will never happen, even if the emu dev's wanted to put it in.

Im not learning Jaguar coding to make money, but for the expierence of producing games on hardware as complex as the Jag's, but, I dont want my code pirated and shared arround for free either. When that is I actually have a game finished hehe, as linkovitch is bound to point out I've been very lazy recently, but my point remains, any games I write are not freeware or shareware and I will be very pissed off by people pirating them.

It's always interesting to see your product mentioned for any reason at all. It's the "any kind of publicity is a good thing" effect.

I've always had the following view on piracy. A person who will pirate any product and never consider purchasing the product (even if they actually like the product) isn't really a lost customer. These people would rather not have the product than pay for it.

It looks like the ebay auction ended without bids anyway. Most people know that emulators can be obtained for free as well as rom images.

Two part response to this thread:

1) I'm not that techno savvy at all and I'm just computer knowledgable enough to be dangerous. But haven't I read in several posts that there is a question whether the Jag emulators can do the CD's or not? If there is some problem, then might not the Painter included in that auction be the BJL version rather than the released CD version? Just wondering.

2) I hope that the released version of Painter isn't available on the 'net. I have a real, real problem with games/music/movies being pirated that are still available for sale retail as the retailers and creators/composers/developers need the incentive and revenue to continue selling & making products. I lived thru the pirate BBS era of the XL and ST and I fully believe that the pirating of programs for those systems played a major role in their demise. Not looking to start a "post" war on the issue, just stating my opinion.

Well, Project Tempest already has initial CD support, and the Virtual Jaguar developer stated today that CD support is being worked on for that emulator as well. So I think it's just a matter of time before we see reasonably good JagCD emulation.

Thanks for the links and info, Al; much appreciated.

The link to Project Tempest shows some nice screen shots (almost better than what I get on my TV :D ) so I'll do some looking around and try to dig up more info. I'm not into emulators at all and really not interested in a Jag version but I'm curious as to what it actually is.

Do you (or anyone else know) if the CD support of PT is mainly for encrypted releases or does it support unencrypted ones like Painter in any way? Like I said in my post (and perhaps I wasn't clear.. I sometimes ramble) if there are CD support problems at all then maybe the Painter that was included in that ROM auction wasn't the CD release version.

They should be perfect screenshots since they were taken from inside an emulator. :) The Jaguar screenshots on AA were taken with an ATI All-in-Winder Pro card using s-video output from the Jaguar, and they look pretty good overall. But they'll never be as pristine as shots taken inside an emulator.

I do not know the answer to this, maybe the emulator authors can answer it?

It probably won't be as trivial to bypass as the regular BIOS ROM signature checks, but it should be doable. So in other words, it should be developer friendly. ;)

PT doesn't care about the encrypted track, because it uses simulated CD bios commands. So both encrypted and non-encrypted CDs should work. The CD support is quite crappy at the moment. Only two games work as far as I know (Primal Rage and Baldies).

As a copyright holder, it's fairly easy to get auctions like this ended in the United States. I don't know what the situation is like elsehwere. Worth pursuing, though, in cases like this.
