Albert
I know we have some hardcore prototype collectors here, but I'm just curious roughly how many prototypes people have for different systems. I'm not a big prototype collector myself, although I do have several for the 2600 and 5200 (maybe 20 total?) and an oddball proto here and there for other systems. Nothing to write home about. How many protos does everyone else have? ..Al

Marco
I have 46 Atari 2600 prototypes, all unreleased titles (I don't collect protos, demos, WIPs etc of released titles). Cheers, Marco
Tempest
Too many to count... Mostly 2600 and 5200 with a few 400/800, 7800, Astrocade, and Vic-20 protos thrown in. I also have one or two 32X, Jaguar, and Odyssey2 protos. I believe my last proto count was around 200+, but I'm slimming down the collection. Now I'm only really interested in WIP and unreleased games. Tempest

MattyXB
Lets see: Atari 2600 VCS: Alpha Beam with Ernie (NTSC) Centipede (PAL) Demons to Diamonds (PAL) Dolphin (NTSC) Donald Duck's Speedboat (PAL) [best Electronics, maybe no real, but not released] Human Cannonball (PAL) Kung-Fu Master (NTSC) Millipede (PAL) Obelix (PAL) Off Your Rocker (NTSC) + 2 manuals [maybe no real Proto, but was not released] Oscar's Trash Race (NTSC) [best Electronics, but I think real Prototype Board inside] Peter Penguin (PAL) [not sure, but looks strange, and I think its real] Raiders of the Lost Ark (NTSC) [ROM a bit different, but can't see in game] Seaquest (PAL) [calls on Lable Sea Quest] Sorcerer's Apprentice (PAL) Taz (NTSC) [no TAZ in titlescreen, only copyright] Atari 7800: Prototype Board [no Game on it] NES: Crystalis (NTSC) [different then the released Version, but not much and I don't know exact where] Sega Mega Drive (Genesis): Mickey's Ultimate Challenge (PAL) Micro Machines Turbo Tournament '96 (PAL) So 16 Atari 2600 VCS + 1 Atari 7800 + 1 NES + 2 Mega Drive = 20 Prototypes. But I own many more Demo's and Promo's and other Rare games, which not official released. But this are all Prototypes, which I know in the moment. Tempest
2, both for the C64: Crystal Castles and HESMon. CC any different? I imagine testing HESMon would be quite a pain... Tempest
Mayhem
The HESMon "proto" is evidently different from the released item as can be seen here: http://www.mayhem64.co.uk/hesmon.htm As for Crystal Castles, Atari to my knowledge never released their version of the game on cartridge in 1984. It was completed but never came out. A company here in the UK called US Gold bought the rights to it and sold it within Europe at Xmas 86 on tape/disc. Thundervision released their own version in 84 on disc, which explains why there are two different programs of it running around. I've never seen Crystal Castles listed in ANY C64 Atari catalog or spiel (manuals, back of boxes etc) but I have seen Stargate, Mario Bros and Joust mentioned, three other games which seemingly never made it out either. I own what I believe to be the actual programs of Mario Bros and Stargate on pirated disc, but I've never seen Joust.
+-^CrossBow^-
I only have 2 VCS protos. My Parker Bros. WIP StarWars:Tag and my proto but final release of Gyruss. However, I could include Andrew Davies first release of QB with the jumping screen to be a proto as I still have that one and the fixed version both. I also have a few PC game protos..though it would be hard to prove, other than I know they are protos since they were sent to me directly. Of those I have a Starsiege Beta CD from Sierra/Dynamix as I was a Beta tester on that game. And a hand written prelease beta 2 of CyberStom2 also from beta testing for Sierra/Dynamix back in the late 90s. Somewhere I should still have my Beta CD from when I beta tested Ultima Online but I haven't seen that one in a while and as I recall, it too was a generic hand written CDR. CPUWIZ
It's funny, with the exception of a couple of people, almost everyone in this thread owns at least one of my protos now.
Adrian M
Sadly I do not own any protos (yet). I guess I'm still trying to fill in the gaps in my regular collection plus I've been getting into homebrew games lately too. The closest thing I own to a proto would be a cart version of "Rabbit Transit" but it appears that this is a repro (has a nice color label and end label) rather than the proto that was found floating around several years back. It's a great game, by the way.
