RCmodeler #1 Posted January 28, 2004 Well maybe not "better" but definitely more variety. Where Zelda is basically the same thing over-and-over (enter room/open door/enter room/open door), BG&E has a lot more variety in its environments... and also much more details. BG&E also found an effective way to make sailing FUN. No boring minute intervals where you can go to the bathroom, eat dinner, come back... and still nothing interesting happened. And finally, I'm really digging the story. Sneaking around in secret meetings... spying on the government... much more interesting than the usual Good vs. Bad deal. +-^CrossBow^- #2 Posted January 28, 2004 Yeap this title as me locked in as well. I have the PC version of it..but with the Cube version at the $20 mark now...I am tempted to pick it up for more permanent use. I wish sites had real comparison shots of how the games looked on the same scene across the platforms. Because Sonic Heroes looks the same in the screenshots on all the platforms. Yet the reviews tell you the Cube version is the best overall. Now I really like BG&E but wonder if the visuals were improved on the cube over the PC. Because while some textures are well done on the PC version..the lighting effects are crap. Take the electric bolts that you'll encounter in the game. On the PC version they look like white huge zigzags with little dynamic lighting being used. So they almost look like fast moving white lines instead of looking like electricity! Still the story is excellent! And the gameplay mechanics really flow very very well. This is what I would totally call a Sleeper hit! Same for The Longest Journey which still has the best voice acting I have ever heard in a game. Best overall scripting in a game as well. This does come in second in my book in that area however. PaulEMoz #3 Posted January 28, 2004 Time for another bit of whoring from me: Read my review of Beyond Good and Evil at Way of the Rodent NOTE: Homepage probably not suitable for work! By the way, I really like this game too, it's a shame it appears to be the most overlooked quality title of the year.
RCmodeler #4 Posted January 29, 2004 it's a shame it appears to be the most overlooked quality title of the year. Both good and bad. It's bad that such a great game will sell poorly and we won't get any sequels. Good because it only cost me $10! GRAPHICS: I don't know about PC/Cube, but the PS2 version has the best cel-shading I've ever seen. Usually when companies make these multi-console games, they optimize the graphics for the PS2... the Cube/Box just get inferior ports.

Actually I've found that the ports are not inferior to the PS2 versions just inferior to games specifically made for the GC or XB, as the graphical standards of the PS2 are most of the time far below the other two. And actually I believe BG&E started out as a GC only game which was then decided to be made for the other two systems as Cube sales were down (this was before the big price drop , I know what Cube sales are now thank you very much). I actually wish more companies would start for the XB and work their way down that way every console gets the best possible version , case in point Splinter Cell - great game on all three platforms but if made for PS2 hardware would have been mediocre on the XB and GC. Well, that all depends on the company making them. If they just make flat out ports without taking advantage of any extra power that any system may have then yes, that will happen. However, if each version of a game is specifically tailored for the system it is on, then all should be well. They used to do that in the old days, I don't know if they still do now.... shep #8 Posted January 29, 2004 its an awesome game, more people need to buy it, I read that it was a real flop for the company on all consoles, which is a shame considering its one of the best action/adventure titles released in awhile....

Cube is still ~500,000 units. It's sad, because I consider the Cube to have a MUCH better software library than the Box.
Jasoco #10 Posted June 26, 2004 I HAVE to bump this! I finally bought this after rave reviews by forum members and I have to say I am happy. $17.99 for it Used at GS. Bought the Cube version of course because as someone said "It just feels like a Cube game". So far, I just left Black Isle after finding out about the well, you know. Taxi, black car, IRIS.. etc. Taking pictures is pretty fun. I feel like I'm playing Pokémon Snap again, but with more freedom, and lots more to do of course. The simplistic playing style is very nice. Not a lot of buttons to memorize, just whack them to death. I like. I think so far I'm most impressed by the feel the game has to it. The humor, the relationships between the characters, the reactions. I was looking through my viewfinder and pointed at my Uncle for a second, and he playfully waved at the camera. That showed me how much thought and detail really went into this game. Shame it sort of flopped. But glad I was able to get it cheap. The music is beautiful. One of my most favorite OverClocked Remixes was done from this game's music, (And I had the remix for weeks before getting the game.) it's well worth checking out, has a great feel. The music in the game is just so tranquil, tense, whatever it needs to be at the moment. This one will keep me guessing for a while.

Yes this game is fantastic, but why oh why did you have to bump a thread RC started... especially when there have been so many other BG&E threads... you almost gave me a heart attack
christianscott27 #12 Posted June 26, 2004 i'd have to be the voice of dissent here, i found the game too dull to finish. i got the game very cheap so i didnt have a lot invested in it, yes i will play thru a game if i dropped $20+ on it. i found it to be a jack of all trades master of none with way too many cutscenes and clunky controls(GC version). i'm more of an action gamer so for me it wasnt too pulse pounding, the combat seemed more like a chore. i guess it was one of those games that had such critical acclaim i was really expecting more. perhaps its the story as well, i know that if i'm really into the storyline that can carry me thru an otherwise ho-hum game but that wasnt the case here. Jasoco #13 Posted June 26, 2004 I bumped this one because all the others were "Help!" threads and I was afraid a Mod would yell at me and point out THIS thread to bump. Sosumi. My bad.
liveinabin #14 Posted June 26, 2004 As I understand it, BG & E has sold quite respectably, maybe not in the first month, but it's sales have continued where other 'big' titles have dropped off. Probably word of mouth was the key factor here. So, I'd be very surprised (and dissapointed) if there's no sequel (or preferably another non BG & E game by the same guy but also unique). Not any time soon, though. This took AGES to develop. Oh, and for my money, this IS better than Zelda.
Dones #15 Posted June 27, 2004 Four years, according to an interview with the creator at BG&E's website. I've heard Wind Waker and Zelda 64 took about the same time to develop. When I first played BG&E I found it a bit generic, but I got more into it as I progressed through. I was impressed with the quality of the Spanish voice acting, which was of excellent quality. If you read the credits you'll notice the game was dubbed in many other languages too. This game is extremely well polished all through. I find it hard to critize it as a"jack of all trades" for doing the same efforts the big franchise companies do. Perhaps if the game was called "Princess Zelda: Beyond Good and Hyrule" it would have been better received.
Atariboy #16 Posted June 27, 2004 "Cube is still ~500,000 units. It's sad, because I consider the Cube to have a MUCH better software library than the Box." Really? Beyond a precious few exclusives, everything worthwhile owning on the Game Cube is available on the Xbox too. I don't understand statements like this myself, but I love the console too(though I hate the GC controller).

I knew I should have began another thread. Well, if it's a problem, let a Mod split the topic. I just wanna talk about the game! I'm gonna play a little more after I eat my BK Dinner. PaulEMoz #18 Posted June 27, 2004 Beyond Good and Evil is just a lovely, lovely game. Wonderful atmosphere, terrific voice acting, a true feeling of immersion into another world. I've recommended it to everyone for as long as it's been out, and will continue to do so.

PaulEMoz #20 Posted June 27, 2004 What are the "Internet Codes" for? The long code that appears on the Save/Load screen. Are they the codes you are given by the Alliance, to help you get through locked doors and such?
Dones #21 Posted June 27, 2004 What are the "Internet Codes" for? The long code that appears on the Save/Load screen. You input the codes at BG&E's website and you get to see your standing against other players. The best players have too good to be true scores with very short time periods and 100% everything (probably cheating).

You also need the code to get into the locker in the bar by Francis's air hockey table from the ubi website. I've gotten lots of different codes for it, but everytime I'm on the moon with no way back to the planet, and you have to be far enough into the game or the site won't let you have the code. If anyone ever gets into it please let me know what's in there, and if its worth it to keep trying.....
Dones #23 Posted June 27, 2004 **** SPOILER AHEAD **** The code for this locker changes everytime you start a new game (from the beginning). It's written on a table where two guys are sitting (near the stairs to the 2nd floor). You'll notice when you approach these guys one of them will move and cover the paper where it's written. I don't really want to say anything more, I think you will figure out a way to take a peek without them knowing.
