Vapor Ware Vaults - Gamepro Mar 04

Recommended Posts

Pretty interesting little article about some of the games that were never released. I was surprised to see Thrill Kill mentioned. Per the article it wasn't released because EA bought Virgin Interactive and felt the subject matter didn't meet their standards and didn't have appropriate content.

Other's that caught my attention were Twelve Tails: Conker's Quest not released because "Conker had a Bad Fur Day instead" :)

Malice - just not ready for release - which confuses me. If a company is going to invest so much money and resources into developing a game and then can it because it's just not up to par, why not release it anyway and try to recoup something? there's so many crap games out there anyway what does one more matter... anyway I thought it looked pretty interesting... as a sidenote Gwen Stefani did the voice for the lead character...

Propellar Arena: Aviation Battle Championship- not released because of 9/11

this may all be old news to some but I thought it was pretty interesting....

Other titles mentioned

Capcom Fighting All-Stars

Harry Potter Online

Half-Life

BattleBots

Killwheel

I remember the Propeller Arena getting canned. But I'm quite dissapointed Battlebots was also canned.

Harry Potter Online? Gad! I'm glad it's canned. Just imagine PSO but full of 10 yo people going Avada Kedavra around. :D

Another 3D action platformer for the XBOX by the name of TORK was also quietly put to rest. Looked to be an interesting game and the folks at the OXM seemed to enjoy it.

I saw something on ign for an XBox game Orchid that looked really interesting, but nothing new so I guess its vaporware too... why couldn't they can the next Madden instead? I prefer off the wall games, I think they have more to offer even if they aren't the "best" or most popular.... sigh

I favorite piece of vaporware has to be the Jaguar Virtual Reality helmet.. I really wanted one of these things when I was younger.

Though the SNES Smurfs game isn't vaporware, I was more than disappointed that Nintendo had the gall to do a spread on this game in their Nintendo Power magazine and then Infogrames (at that time "owned" by Ocean) doesn't even release it stateside. The Gameboy version came out with a limited release, though if it weren't for Nintendo bringing that out in 1998 as a "Player's Choice" title, it would've just totally disappeared under the radar.

I remember reading about the Dreamcast version of Outcast (a great PC action/adventure game, if you can find it) which was supposed to have enhanced 3D graphics. I think it would have been an excellent title. *sniff*

I'd really love to try that Duelin' Firemen game! Where else can you find such crazy stuff as singing, dancing firemen trying to get a contract while Chicago burns?

Actually, it appears that Malice WILL BE coming out in March 2004 for XBOX and PS2 afterall. I just read this article:

http://www.gamespy.com/xbox/news.shtml

Malice Dated

Prophet | 8:32 |

Evolved Games announced that Malice will make its way to the PlayStation 2 and Xbox in March 2004. Malice is a console platformer offering cute characters, 29 levels, seven bosses to battle, lots of power-ups and 15 different themes. Evolved Games also plans to publish Lost Toys' Battle Engine Aquila for the PC in February and Argonaut's Powerdrome, for the Xbox and PS2.

I wish Star Fox 2 had been released and Star Fox 64 would of been scrapped.

Not me! I would have liked to have seen both but I thought Star Fox 64 was great and gorgeous and it's why I bought the system when I did...it grabbed me in a way Mario 64 didn't.

"Star Fox 2" wouldn't have half the graphics Star Fox 64 did (especially the "Independence Day / ID4" homage....man, that was cool, not 'til GameCube's Rogue Leader would I get the feeling of swarms of enemy fighter craft to battle)

Plus, Miyamoto himself said "I really wanted to make realistic aiing and shooting--sort of a floating feeling. But it was difficult to get it to work on the Super NES. I wanted to improve that in the N64 game." (Of course, re: Slippy's voice in SNES vs N64, he says "I told them to cut the croaking (laughs). It was too childlike" so I guess even the God of Nintendo makes some mistakes...) The controller was very important in this game, and I find it very difficult to go back to the SNES original because of the control.

(Quotes are from an interview at the back of the Star Fox 64 Nintendo Player's Guide)

I wonder if Star Fox 2 really was 100% off the rails, only "free flight mode" like the article implies, or if it was some of each like Star Fox 64.

I can't believe the first GC Star Fox game was a frickin' Zelda 64 clone...

Try it yourself. The prototype has been dumped and is available around the internet.
