Not to sound like an idiot, but welcome to my life. How do

Recommended Posts

Go to the post office and pay a $0.90 cent fee and ask for one. Make sure that you tell them where it is supposed to go (U.S. or international). Then you fill out the name & addresses, stick it in an envelope and send it. :)

Or you can get them from your bank. My bank gives me free money orders.

My bank tries to charge me 3.00 for them. And they don't take the money on the spot for the MO, they take it out of your account.

I just end up going to the post office for cheap ones. And you can send the money order all in one go.

My bank tries to charge $3.00 for them as well, unless I have $5000 in checking or savings.

I never have that kind of dough, so I drive another 100 yards and buy money orders for 45 cents from the service counter at my local warehouse grocery store. They're the cheapest I've found so far, better than the PO.

You may be able to find similar deals if you look around.

If you deal internationnally, make sure your money order will be cashable in the destination country.

Regular green USPS money orders are hard to cash here in Canada when you get a clerk that is not used to that sort of transaction because it's maked "U.S. or possession ONLY!". But it's still possible most of the time after arguing a bit but I would say that they are nearly impossible to cash in elsewhere.

There are pink money orders for international transactions. They cost more ($3.50 it think) but are more secure and are probably cashable about anywhere.

Banks money orders or certified checks are really annoying outside the US. It's like a personal check here, the bank holds it until it clears and cross-border, it takes sometimes up to 3 weeks!

Please be nice to your foreign sellers and get international MOs! :D

I go to wawa they charge like 70 cents. I go my first money order last month for the vectrex and I was waiting in line after the guy gave it to me for like five minutes than finally he was like can I help you and I said yeah I need you to send it to the guy. Well after he explained the concept to me and boy was my face red. :dunce:

I hate money orders personally, but when I do receive them, I only accept money orders from the USPS. I'm at the post office so often that I usually just use them towards whatever business I'm doing or cash them there.

Going to the bank to deposit a Money Order isn't worth the time or hassle for me. That's the same reason why I never accept personal checks for anything.

Same here, I don't like having to go to the bank constantly either. Although, I do get some very colorful (and different sized) money orders, from all kinds of weird places. LOL

For international Money Orders, some banks offer what is known as a 'CHASE DRAFT', that is a money order drawn on Chase Manhattan Bank. The benefit to this is that Chase is much more well known than Kankakee Federal 'Charge you out the wazoo for everything' Savings money order.
