Does anyone use NVDI?

Recommended Posts

I was wondering if anybody out there uses NVDI? I was interested in getting the progrma mainly to use web browesers like highwire etc. However the asking price is outrageous ($180 AU). It seems that the authors of this software are not supporting it anymore. If it is now pd I would like to get a copy for download. Anyone know where?

Absolutely buy it!

It's a h-u-g-e improvement over the standard, plus it adds more powerful functions.

I bought it for my MSTe, now I use it on the Falcon.

Ciao!

Yes, it good program. It's speeding graphics funcions of standard Ataris, get more printer models (with special functions), some new font install and etc.

Publisher is ASH (application Systems Heidelberg), net is :http://ash.sww.net

Good Luck!!!

Hi

I'm using NVDI on TT030, MSTE, MST4 and the Stacy - it has i.e. a much better SLM-driver than the Atari one (by my SLM605 the original-driver doesn't work, the NVDI driver does it :D), and it uses better fonts (I've heard, that you can use M$-Windows-Fonts like Arial etc. on NVDI). And to get really faster, you should install MagiC - it's also available by ASH in Germany :) - than you've a Multitasking-system, which works much faster than original TOS :)

C'ya

Mike

This works from Nvdi 3.0 oder 2.5 on. I took over most of my windows-fonts.

Heh.. If atari came out with a Mega ST 3, it'd be MST3K

In version of NVDI 5.03 You can use true type fonts from other platforms. I'm looking for PS driver for NVDI - anyone have it? ASH no support Post Script drivers for NVDI... :(

Wait, IIRC there is an additional module for NVDI that supports PS, but I should check this, since I wasn't interested in it.

BTW, if you are interested in PS things, you should go for Calamus!

I've been looking into upgrading my OS/desktop for my 1040STf (especially now that I have a HD and a 4meg upgrade on the way). I've looked into MINT and Geneva and several other solutions and desktops, but I haven't heard about NVDI yet, can someone direct me to a site with info on it?

Maybe some one else out there has an upgraded 1040ST that uses alternative desktops and OS/multi-tasking OS systems that maybe can give me suggestion from what they use/like. I would also like to get my ST onto the net with CAB or hirwire or similiar too. Basically there seem to be to many choices and many seem to be able to work together? I just want the fastest, most reliable, best looking and most TOS compatible (for current apps and games)alternatives to the boring and symplistic TOS 1.2 and GEM I'm using now.

It's above. . . folks pointed out the right people to go to. There's also Atari Workshop in the UK, if you actually want to buy this stuff new in retail packaging.

Read around on the board a bit, you'll find all this. Some of the basic FAQ and weblink sites are useful too.

One of the things I wanted to accomplish when I set up my STE was to run a multi-tasking OS. Four months later, I still haven't done that. Geneva looks like the most appealing option but I haven't bought the software yet, and the notion of running a timed demo bothers me.

There are a lot of choices, but once you've done some reading, the options become more clear. For example, MultiTOS is too old and buggy, and became MagiC anyway, so scratch MultiTOS off my list. MagiC seems happiest on a Falcon or TT030, not to mention their developers don't seem interested in the actual Atari hardware anymore (not to mention less interested in MagiC regardless of platform)-- scratch that. Geneva hasn't been updated in a while, but IIRC, the author lives here in the US and at least still sells the product.

Thanks for some thoughts, you have helped me narrow my list some, I have read up some on MultiTOS and MINT(freeMINT) and Geneva, but MultiTOS I thought was only for STE, TT or Falcon anyway, and not for my ST, so that one was already scratched off my list. As far as support for the OS's goes, I never really expected that anyway for my 19 year old computer, I more concerned with compatibility with all the OLD software, yet still be more modern with 3D icons and wallpaper and screensavers, etc. plus other application or accessories. My Amiga has Kickstart 4 and workbench 3.2 and it looks more modern, heck even ATOS on my Atari XE looks more modern and has more features and versatility than GEM. I also want increased speed too, and internet ability; PPP, browser, e-mail etc. like CAB and STING, but don't they only work with MINT or GENEVA?

I will continue my research and look into NVDI, but I was just hoping someone who has a 1040ST and has upgraded it's memory and added HD, etc. like myself could tell me from experience what worked best with my model, what entailed a successful system for a modern desktop, extra speed and/or multitasking, internet capability(even if it's minimal, but I've seen screen shots here of 4 color med res. and heard of low res with 16 colors, etc.)

It's certainly not going to replace my PC for internet, but I would like to give my ST a bit more modern look and be able to have wallpaper and screensavers, etc., multitasking would be great and at least the possibilty to go online if I chose too.

NeoDesk and Geneva are pretty much your best bets for doing what you want to do. They'll definitely help give you a more "modern" look to your system, although you have to realize that you're still going to be quite limited with what you can do with a 1040ST. I can't give you any tips on getting online with it, other than to just look up the resources that are needed to do so. BTW, what version of TOS do you have? Later versions of TOS added much better stability and more functionality, atlhough the ones with the most modern features were limited to the later systems that were produced. I think the highest a standard 1040ST can go is TOS 1.4.

Hello folks,

I´ve checked out the right url from ASH.

http://www.application-systems.de/

It´s a german Website, but the Shop is easy to find and within ATARI-software NVDI can be found. The actual price is 80 Euro - thought that it had been cheaper.

This is a great tool anyway. The graphics and redrawings are speeded up rapidly. You can use Windows fonts and there are many printers supportet - even in color mode. Programmes like Calamus or your textporgramme can use this printer drivers via GDOS output, cause a GDOS is included into NVDI.

If you once used this programme, you´ll never want to be without it ;) [/url]

Hmm, have you ever heard about Magic or N.AES? This two "desktops" bring you multitasking, long filenames, ... , and with the right desktopprogramme - i.e. Jinnee- jou can have colorful backgrounds and icons, a start button like windows, a task bar, ... , even notices onto the desk are possible.

Magic is a "new" system written in assembler, while N.AES sets up onto MiNT and is written in C.

Magic and Jinnee can be found at ASH site, N.AES here: http://www.woller.com

A good webbrowser is within the Draconi package. Even Javascript is possible... http://draconis.atari.org/
