AtariDevRiot #1 Posted May 5, 2001 Any of you familiar with Demon Attack and/or Wizard Of Wor?
Mountain King #2 Posted May 5, 2001 Yeah, Demon Attack was by Imagic and a little bit like Phoenix where you shoot birds. It gets a little monotonous after a while but its pretty fun. Wizard of Wor is by CBS Electronic and follows pretty closely to the arcade except for the special mazes. Its a lot of fun to play the two player version. PeeknPoke #3 Posted May 6, 2001 Both good games. demon attack has a really good learning curve, I enjoy the fx (The constant "wappp wappp" sounds getting faster per level is great) yeah, its a simple game but its a good timewaster too Wizard of Wor is a game that I used to play as a kid in the arcades and 2600, something that today seems limited by design but again is a stunning two player game Lee
ulij20 #4 Posted March 12, 2004 Demon Attack was always one of my favorite games back in 1982. One time, I was blazing through all the levels and I ended up beating the computer. After the demons in each wave had every color combination there was, instead of rolling back to the first level, the screen went blank. They apparently forgot to put in a wrap-around chip. colwyn #5 Posted March 12, 2004 Both great games. I can play Demon Attack over and over and not get weary of it. Wizard of Wor can become a little tiresome, but still fun to play. Both good 2600 versions.
Adrian M #6 Posted March 12, 2004 Any of you familiar with Demon Attack and/or Wizard Of Wor? Yes. I have both games. Also, Wizard of Wor is quite possibly the BEST arcade-to-VCS conversion to date. It's almost spot on in terms of graphics, play control, and progression. With 2 players, Wizard of Wor is very well be one of the top-tier co-op VCS games. HawgWyld #7 Posted March 12, 2004 Any of you familiar with Demon Attack and/or Wizard Of Wor? Very familiar. Demon Attack is probably my favorite space Space Invaders/Phoenix-inspire shooters available for the 2600. Nice and colorful and nothing but action, action, action. Wizard of Wor is very good, too, although the screen flicker might send you into a fit!
Gregory DG #8 Posted March 12, 2004 Boy, nothing like digging up ANCIENT threads! Wow, this one was from 2001!
Goochman #9 Posted March 12, 2004 WoW is more challenging and a good arcade port for the 2600. I bought this new and played it to death. Ive since almost mastered it so I havent played in awhile - pinmame has got my attention
stayrunner #10 Posted March 13, 2004 I've only played WoW on Mame. In my opinion, Demon Attack gets old quick. I like these games, but don't play them to often.
ATARIPITBULL #11 Posted March 13, 2004 I used to be so good at the arcade Wizard of Wor game back in the 80's that I could draw all the mazes by hart and when I played the 2600 version, I was amazed at how well it looked and played.
moycon #12 Posted March 13, 2004 The thing is AtariDevRiot will sadly probably not see these positive responses. He hasn't posted since May 2003 That said they are both great games.....
NE146 #13 Posted March 13, 2004 Wizard of Wor == Top Notch You know the arcade game had a bunch more mazes.. I wonder how hard it would be to just make a fun hack of the 2600 version with additional mazes from the arcade game.. sort of like Wizard Of Wor - Part B. Hey if Miner 2049er could do it........ Nateo #14 Posted March 13, 2004 Wizard of Wor has got to be one of my favorite 2600 games. It's just as much fun (if not more fun) to play with a friend than just by yourself. As far as Demon Attack goes, I'm not really a big fan of it, I'd rather be playing Pheonix. It just gets too monotonous and, well, kind of annoying after a while. But having said that, there are MUCH worse games than Demon Attack. MUCH worse.
Dino from Bula #15 Posted March 14, 2004 WoW was great on VCS, but perfect on Bally. Try it sometime - it's the definition of a perfect port. Also, Wizard of Wor is quite possibly the BEST arcade-to-VCS conversion to date. It's very. very good, but I kinda liked Berzerk better - both for play and porting. Vic George 2K3 #16 Posted March 14, 2004 Demon Attack seems more at home as it is on the Atari 2600 than it does on the Atari home computers, where they could have done a whole lot more with it like they did with the Intellivision and some other personal computer versions. The Phoenix hack with Demon Attack creatures is probably the closest thing the Atari 2600 will get to doing that. Wizard Of Wor is an okay translation, not great but one I wish I could've owned back in the days when I was collecting 2600 games for playing.
CZroe #17 Posted March 14, 2004 A friend gave me my copy of Demon Attack back when we were in school together. It was almost confiscated too (Christian Schools & "Demonic video games" don't mix). Had a load of fun with that one I remember wondering what the heck was up with the "Sears" console mentioned on the label (I had never seen it or heard of it at the time). ulij20 #18 Posted March 16, 2004 What I liked about Demon Attack was the sound effects of some of the Demons when you shot them (in the sixth wave, it sounds like they're saying "eagle-bird" - other waves include the "suck-a-lug", "gray bubble" "olga-ga" sound effects). One thing that's really cool is to shoot a diving demon as it hits you and if your timing is right, it starts sounding all the sound effects of the demons, one right after another, continuously until you start hitting demons again (note: this maneuver doesn't work if it's the last demon in the wave or you get hit on your last life)

HawgWyld #21 Posted March 17, 2004 Boy, nothing like digging up ANCIENT threads! Wow, this one was from 2001! Errr, yeah. Perhaps I should start looking at dates before I start responding! I figured it was a fairly new question since it had a recent reply or two. Oh, well...
+kisrael #22 Posted March 18, 2004 Now that I have a 2600 game under my belt (though I'm not genius programmer) I really have an appreciation for some of the technical achievements. Wizard of Wor is right up there. It's kind of flickery, since it uses the same graphic for 6 monsters at once, but still, a very VERY solid translation of a fun game. If you want a brilliant game that's kind of a spiritual successor to Wizard of Wor, check out Crossroads and Crossroads II from Compute's Gazette for the Commodore 64 - that's a review I wrote at classicgaming.com. It loses the radar, but more than makes up for it with HUGE #s of enemies (with different alliances and rivalries among the groups) and lovely little pixel explosions... the review has all the downloads you need to play I think.
