StanJr #1 Posted February 8, 2004 Who knew! Sure, the gun isn't as accurate as you might hope, but as a piece of VCS hardware its pretty darn cool. And thanks to that, Sentinel is a lot of fun. Colorful graphics, nice music, fast paced shootin' action. I'm rather impressed. Best of all, no annoying sprite frame boxes when you shoot (unlike the contemporary Duck Hunt or Bayou Billy for NES), just a flashing screen. I'm extremely happy I managed to find a Sentinel in the wild and BIG UPS to CPUWIZ for the hook-up on scrounging me a Lightgun! Too bad the VCS folded so soon after this came out, I'd love to have more Lightgun games. Is Shootin' Gallery any good?
+uosipa llamxew #2 Posted February 8, 2004 I'm turning green... I've been hunting for Sentinel on eBay, but I always get sniped in the last moments! I have a brand new SMS zapper, and an adapter on its way, but I can't seem to land Sentinel! :-( From what I've played in an emulator, the game is really fun! Does anyone know a place that will repro the Shooting Gallery proto? I'd like to get my hands on that one as well. I'm a big fan of games that use custom controllers, lately. So, being the OCD kind of guy that I am, I have to have all the different controllers, and at least one game for each. On another note... I never thought I'd buy a modern system, but gave in to the Dreamcast after realizing you could emulate on it. Then I realized how innovative this console is... so many different strange games, with different controllers, and ways to play. Soon after I started obsessing and bought about 40 or so games for it - many with unique controllers! but I digress
Gregory DG #3 Posted February 8, 2004 I also like Sentinel. But then, I like all the red label games.
joeybastard #4 Posted February 9, 2004 I'm actually surprised there wasn't a gun for the VCS right from the start. Considering the amount of add ons/controllers the system had, it seems like a natural.
birdie3 #5 Posted February 9, 2004 I am glad to hear this. I am also looking for this game still.
Osmeroid #6 Posted February 10, 2004 One year on since I got my copy of Sentinel and still no lightgun Those hings are damn difficult to track down. There is always Philly....
Rob Mitchell #7 Posted February 10, 2004 Is Shootin' Gallery any good? This Shootin' Gallery is alot of fun! ... much more fun than Sentinel where all the objects move predictably from right to left. (I have both on the Cuttle Cart2.) When used with a Sega SMS Lightgun .. seemingly more accurate. You need a SMS to Atari lightgun adapter though. PM me about the adapter. $10 + $2 shipping. Cassidy Nolen #8 Posted February 10, 2004 Does anyone know a place that will repro the Shooting Gallery proto? I'd like to get my hands on that one as well. Well, I have the label and box art.....just cannot for the life of me get my eprom burner to make the chip. I think because it has a page of FF's, the burner will not take it. If I change the first memory byte to anything other than FF, it works. Problem is, the game does not play right. It keeps firing over and over and the graphics are all wrong. Maybe soon....... +uosipa llamxew #9 Posted February 12, 2004 Well, I have the label and box art.....just cannot for the life of me get my eprom burner to make the chip. I missed out on Frog Pond. Any chance I can get my name on your preorder list for this one in case you succeed in burning the chips? (Am I jumping the gun?) Shootin' Gallery plays great on an emulator. I can only imagine playing it with a zapper on the real machine! *drool*
Cassidy Nolen #10 Posted February 13, 2004 Never fear That game release will not happen before Philly (I don't have the time to deal with the print shop again). You'll be first on my list! Cassidy
Tempest #11 Posted February 13, 2004 Shooting Arcade is fun, but increadibly hard due to the inaccurate nature of the Atari light gun. http://www.atariprotos.com/2600/software/s...otingarcade.htm Sentinel is fun in short spurts, but I found it a little boring. I also found some of the bosses to be way too hard (once again due to the inaccurate gun). http://www.atariprotos.com/2600/software/s...el/sentinel.htm Tempest
StanJr #12 Posted February 13, 2004 Matt, I just read your page on Shooting Arcade, very nice write up. Is Shooting Arcade completed or is it unfinished?
Tempest #13 Posted February 13, 2004 Is Shooting Arcade completed or is it unfinished? Complete AFAIK. No way to be sure though. Tempest
+Mitch #14 Posted February 14, 2004 Anyone else besides me beat 2600 Sentinel? If you really want to enjoy it you need to get a Best lightgun or a modified/adapter Sega lightgun. The Atari lightgun is just too inaccurate and makes the game frustating to play. Mitch
