tantone56 #1 Posted February 15, 2004 Hey I was just thinking about it and you could burn a ton of atari games to a cd and play them on the apex without needing any mods... If this is true than I think that ill hold off on the xbox mod and just wait for the apex system... are you guys going to get one?
Avid Fan #2 Posted February 15, 2004 I dunno, but this system does sound like it will have the ability to be cool once some one messes with it a bit. I wish it had a hard drive though, I want MAME on my TV

Ze_ro #8 Posted February 16, 2004 If you're a complete novice to burning Dreamcast emulators, head over to Sbiffy, sign up for their forums, download Selfboot Inducer, and the appropriate SBI files for whatever it is you want to burn. I haven't tried this program myself (since I don't run Windows), but it's the generally accepted way of burning most of this stuff. You can also put multiple emulators on the same disc using SBI's. --Zero
Mord #9 Posted February 16, 2004 I dunno, but this system does sound like it will have the ability to be cool once some one messes with it a bit. I wish it had a hard drive though, I want MAME on my TV "Apex Digital is planning to unveil a new game console called ApeXtreme at the Consumer Electronics Show (CES) in Las Vegas. The console features a 1.4 GHz Via C3 processor, 40 GB hard drive, 256 MB RAM, and a 64 MB DeltaChrome graphics chip by S3. The console will play PC games running on a Windows XP Embedded operating system. Other features include a built-in-modem, Ethernet, four front-side USB ports, MP3, DVD and VCD playback, and a remote control." http://www.gamepro.com/gamepro/domestic/ga...ews/32599.shtml Looks like it has a harddrive to me... I must look into this further. -- Mord

PuddWakkr #13 Posted February 16, 2004 DC emulation is not all that great. Snes games and even some NES ones play pretty rough. Never tried the MAME one however does it do a decent job or is it "just because we can". Granted it's been about a year since I've messed with them so maybe they have gotten better. I'd say if you have an xbox use that instead. My XB EMU-
Lemmi #14 Posted February 16, 2004 the 3 mameD CDRs i got are kinda odd, all 3 cds have the entire list of games, and you have to guess which ones are on that disc these were all made for me about a year ago
Avid Fan #15 Posted February 16, 2004 How does MAME run on a dreamcast? I only play older games, and the only games I've had problems with are NARC and Asteroids. I tried to play some early nineties Midway games (NBA Jam, MK) but they sucked on my PC (they make them for SNES, which I plan on getting. But can the dreamcast handle games like X-Men and TMNT, or how about older ones such as Donkey Kong, Berzerk and Kongo Bongo, since you need samples for them
Ze_ro #16 Posted February 16, 2004 MAMED runs decently well, although anything too new either won't work at all (often due to memory limitations), or will run too slow. It's perfectly fine for older games like Pac-Man and Dig Dug though. A big problem with MAMED though is that it's based on a very old version of MAME (0.36 or 0.37b16 or something), so getting the right version of roms can be a major pain. There is another port of MAME called the Wow pack that I haven't tried yet. If you really want to play MAME on your Dreamcast, this is probably the best bet. I don't know how it's speed compares to MAMED, but it definitely has higher compatibility, and it's based on a much newer version of MAME (0.78?) NES emulation using NesterDC is essentially perfect. There are a handful of games that don't work (Rygar is the only one I can think of offhand), but everything else is full speed. You can even use a Dreamcast lightgun in some versions of NesterDC. SNES emulation using DreamSNES is a little iffy. Some games run perfectly fine, some have to skip frames, and some will slow down. There is a new SNES emulator in the works called Super Famicast. It's pretty new, so it's not quite as good as DreamSNES yet, but it seems to be progressing very quickly (whereas DreamSNES hasn't been updated in about 2 years). There's a Genesis emulator out there called SegaGen... this is a hacked version of the Sega Smashpack that lets you play other games... it works, but with poor sound (much like the Smashpack itself). It's also illegal, so don't ask about it on DCEmulation. There are some other Genesis emulators, but most of them are fairly poor (lacking sound entirely, or just plain slow). Atari 2600 emulation with DCStella is a little slow... ColecoVision emulation with [D]Colem is perfectly fine (although I don't think it handles the Driving Controller or Roller Controller... Atari 5200/8-bit emulation using Atari800 seems perfect to me... ZX Spectrum emulation using DreamSpec also seems perfect, but I'm not too familiar with the system itself, so I could be wrong... Smeg and SMS+ are both quality Master System/Game Gear emulators (SMS+ seems to be the better of the two)... Gameboy emulation using DCGnuBoy is acceptable, although has some issues... And while it's not technically an emulator, ScummVM works quite nicely. If you want these, just go to DCEmulation and Sbiffy, and make your own copies. It's really not that hard. --Zero
