KaineMaxwell #1 Posted February 17, 2004 Anyone else here prefer, or not prefer, these to the traditional rectangular NES controllers?
Ze_ro #2 Posted February 17, 2004 I actually haven't used one myself... but they certainly can't be any worse than the "corner stabbing you in your palm" rectangular ones... --Zero
nesman85 #3 Posted February 17, 2004 i have trouble using them because i'm so used to the regular controller. the buttons on the dogbone aren't right next to each other, they're at an angle and i just can't get used to it, so i stick with the regular. sku_u #4 Posted February 17, 2004 I'm not crazy about the dog bone or stock NES controllers. I mostly use NES Max controllers when playing the NES.
sigma #5 Posted February 17, 2004 both, it doesn't really matter
Dones #6 Posted February 17, 2004 I like dogbone pad. IMO the SNES-like button position and its dogbone design makes it a lot more comfortable to use.
SS #7 Posted February 18, 2004 I think that the original NES controllers were among the most uncomfortable ever. Just too darned blocky to ever fit snugly in my hand. I snagged a cheap dogbone a couple of months ago and haven’t looked back.
DeV0 #8 Posted February 18, 2004 The dogbones are alot better then the regular killer block pads. Actually I have the famicom pads hooked up to my NES at the moment
Markimus of K. #9 Posted February 18, 2004 I'm just going to add my own $.02 here, I've used the SMS dogbone fairly extensivley and I think the A&B buttons are the best! The controler pad has some issues but, man the beautiful tactile feedback I get off the buttons has not yet been met on any modern gaming system. The PS2 is close, but no cigar... KaineMaxwell #10 Posted February 18, 2004 Now that I've finally used the dogbone NES controller, I love it. Alot easier on the hands then the rectangular one and feels like gripping the SNES controller.
NovaXpress #11 Posted February 18, 2004 It's all about the dogbone. Those original controllers were a nightmare, though I somehow adapted. I played some NES with those rectangles the other day and I was still nimble with the Konami code.
Susuwatari #12 Posted February 18, 2004 I'm just going to add my own $.02 here, I've used the SMS dogbone fairly extensivley and I think the A&B buttons are the best! Since when did Sega make a Dogbone controller for SMS? I'd bet you m3eant NES controller. I do like the dogbone controller more than the block controller. A few years ago, Funcoland was putting them out by the shovel full and I picked up some for myself.
Inky #13 Posted February 18, 2004 I preferred the NES MAX controller, myself.
KaineMaxwell #14 Posted February 18, 2004 Never used the MAX myself. How's it play?
Inky #15 Posted February 18, 2004 Never used the MAX myself. How's it play? I thought pretty well. It's a bit of an unusual controller, but the wing shape (and the auto fire buttons ) make it worth a look-see.
KaineMaxwell #16 Posted February 18, 2004 How's it play with the trackball-type controller?
Inky #17 Posted February 18, 2004 How's it play with the trackball-type controller? ?/? Not sure I understand your question there... The NES Max was a gamepad that was a bit different. It had a red button on hte D pad that slid arond, thus making shifting direction easier...
KaineMaxwell #18 Posted February 18, 2004 So the big red pad replaced the traditional D-pad? How's it feel when using it? Sorry for sounding newbie with it, I've seen some for sale at Gamestop but never bought one, though I wanted to.
Inky #19 Posted February 18, 2004 So the big red pad replaced the traditional D-pad? How's it feel when using it? Sorry for sounding newbie with it, I've seen some for sale at Gamestop but never bought one, though I wanted to. I liked it, but to be honest, about half the time I pressed down on the black ring. The black ring is actually the d-pad with the sliding red button snapped inside.
Avid Fan #20 Posted February 20, 2004 Thats my Nes controler of choice. Its very small, but I've been using it since I was 6. my dad bought it because the place was reminicant of intellivision which was the only game system had ever owned (and they killed it before I was born). Its independant turbo buttons are a must have for action games which will allow you to run fast with out firing rapidly, and jump high bu using the standart non-turno jump button. But the controller is definately not for everybody. In fact I think I'm the only person that liked it. Its quite possibly the smallest controller I've seen. my friends all refuse to use it. And my dad who bought it only played the NES for about 5 hours we had it set up in the family room
SS #21 Posted February 20, 2004 I've seen a few MAX controllers in the local shops. I always thought that they looked kinda weird so I never bothered picking one up. Maybe based upon Inky's recommendation I should reconsider.
Cootster #22 Posted February 20, 2004 Never got used to pads until the PS1 . . . Now, if I had to use a pad to play NES, I'd definitely go for the dogbone . . . Anybody else forget which system you're playing and start hunting for shoulder buttons on it, though?
+uosipa llamxew #23 Posted February 20, 2004 The dogbone controllers have a very nice feel to them, although they seem really small in my hands compared to other controllers. Since I got my top-loading NES a few months ago, I haven't really bothered with any of the other controllers. In my house, the only time that the NES MAX got used was when I had friends over and the 4-score out to play Kings of the Beach or Super Offroad. Even then, the only reason it was used is because it was just slightly better than the NES Advantage, and we had no other extra controllers. Like Inky mentioned, the sliding disc doesn't trigger control, rather the black d-pad underneath it. The control always seemed more awkward - like I had to push down on the disc a bit harder to get the d-pad to depress. And you DO get better control if you press on the black ring instead of the disc. :-P IMO, some of the worst controllers ever made were for the NES. One of my friends had a controller that was a big ball and two massive rectangular buttons. The ball wasn't like a trakball. Rather, it shifted and clicked when you pressed in a direction. Anyone else seen this one? Then of course there was the U-force or whatever it was called. They all sucked! Oops, I digress

Wouldn't mind having one, jhust for the novelty. On-topic... The "dogbone" pads are what the NES should have shipped with in teh first place. ... Well, actually it should have shipped with an Advantage, but that's a whole 'nother story.
The MilkMan #25 Posted February 20, 2004 I've gotten used to the 'ol plastic block 'oer the years. I just got these today, and havn't tried them out yet. Wireless controllers. Hope they work ok, but for $5 I can't complain! Anyone else used these before? They ok? (for block style controllers that is)
