I played some James Bond last night.

Recommended Posts

I don't get it. I really don't. Bought "007:Everything or Nothing " last night(actually the kids got it for my birthday) and sat down to play it with a glass of wine.

The opening cinematics were pretty cool, you can tell they're trying their damnest to similate a movie. I'm ok with this - whatever, get me to the game. As the dialogue progresses I'm eventually immersed into the scene and I finally gain control of Bond. Again I see what they're trying to do which is fine, but I'd like to play the game.

Once gaining control ,I'm getting shot at and instructions tell me to use the left button(under the controller) to aim and the right button to shoot. This was silly. Instant gratification?! No aiming? no skill? I was getting pissed. The rest of the "scene" plays out with me just auto-aiming and shooting(not fun). No skill required.

The scene finally ends and next I'm dropped off in a vetrex/tron looking training area. Wha?? Where's the game? I couldn't get out of the training mode to play the game. So I trudge along to finish the training mode. After finishing all the long exhaustive tasks, I'm about bored and a bit irritated. I turn the xbox off and went to play some kaboom. Ahhhh yes, reflexes! yes! skill! feed me

We have about 25 games and I'm really not enjoying our Xbox at all

I guess you don't like sports games? I thought you guys were the cool family who collect all those Genny sports games? :P

I still don't have an Xbox but I go over a lot to play with other people's systems. I've had tremendous fun playing Halo, Baseball, Hockey, and Football games. MVP Baseball and NHL Hockey are awesome on the Xbox and I'm really looking forward to getting a system this year for some of these games.

Well yeah Madden is fun so is NHL 2003/4 and Ralli Sport is pretty cool, and perhaps a few others, but that's it. Seems the bulk of the games seem stale(at least to me). Maybe I'm just getting old and don't have the patience to "learn" a game instead of just jumping in and playing.

And we're still the cool family who have switched from Genny sports games but have gone back to trying to get all the 2600 sports games ;)

You do realize you've only played the two 'introductory' levels that are there to get you used to the controls? You don't walk out of a movie if you don't like the beginning credits do you, or put a book down if page one hasn't grabbed you? The game proper hasn't even begun yet. The enemies are deliberately lame on the first level, it's so you can figure out how to shoot and run and fight etc without getting shot down in ten seconds. Finish the training level, and then play the rappeling level after that, on 00 Agent difficulty. Enemies hide behind crates and pin you down with gunfire. They sneak up behind you while you're busy trying to shoot someone else. You WILL be challenged! :P

Well yeah, good point, but after 1/2 hour -45 minutes of game play I'd like at least a hint of a challenge. Maybe tonight if I get time, I'll try to endure some more "training" or I might just run off half-cocked and play kaboom :P

Errrmm Can't you usually skip training LVLs if you want?

I know several games that begin like you stated, but you have the option to bail out of the training if you want. Personally I always see them through just because there's too many buttons on controllers these days.

I agree with dinovelvet though, don't knock a game based on the training levels.

Sounds like 0 patience.   :x

Yeah probably :)

Is there a way to turn off the enemy crosshairs? Obviously I'm not big into FPS games, but why have these auto-target crosshairs? The game looks cool graphically, but it just seems annoying to have these little targets pop up. Lets see no more red targets coming at me, I must have cleared this area. Did Halo have these auto enemy targets as well? Maybe I'm just missing the boat on this whole realism thing. :ponder:

Sounds like you have the wrong games. Pick up the Indy Jones game for the XBox. Requires quite a bit of skill and is very movie oriented to boot. Probably pick it up cheap too. Same style of game the new bond is but maybe a little more challenging for you.

Get it modded, install some emu's. Here's a big clue, XBOX GAMES SUCK. :D However, I had a great time last night playing Genesis Super Monaco GP :P

...ok maybe xbox games don't all really suck, but I too find it hard to find one I like and will actually sit and play... And of course I literally have almost all of them *cough*. :ponder:

I don't blame you, Maibock.

A lot of modern games are just too demanding in some spots. I tried getting into the new Syphon Filter:Omega Strain demo for PS2 and by golly, I was overwhelmed.

Hell, usually a game of Spitfire Attack resets my reflexes.

I really got into playing Super Mario Bros again though..LOL. I'd never known how to use the warps over the top of the screen. Always played it the old fashioned way.

My point is, if the games aren't good enough, try a GC or a PS2.

I'd love to get it modded! I'm kind of hoping someone will pull me aside at Philly Classic and explain the nuances of achieving this. I'm not quite sure how all of that works :ponder:

I might just do that. I enjoy the Indiana Jones movies and I've been meaning to pick this game up. thanks for the reminder

Yeah, the kids have been bugging the crap out of me lately to get a GC, but I've been a bit reluctant since nothing has really grabbed my attention that isn't already on Xbox. Plus, cute little creatures crawling all over the screen kind of tick me off. I'm sure I'll break down and get the thing though.

I rented the new James Bond game today, and having played it for only an hour, I love it so far. I haven't even got very far, but it seems to be extremely well done, and I'm having a blast. Maybe you need to rent a few games from Blockbuster and try and find a couple of genres that appeal to you, and stick to those? Sometimes a certain type of game just doesn't appeal.

....and just to bump this a bit, I'm really enjoying this game! Got past a couple of levels, switching from on foot to driving levels works really well for me, and it actually feels like you're in a Bond movie. Very impressed so far.

I should have some time today to give it another whirl. How'd you like the helicopter mission? I thought it would crash when I slammed the rotors into the canyon walls, but luckily they're made of some super special alloy :ponder:

This is a perfect example of why I like the PS2 the most. XBOX is basicly a sports console, GC is basicly a kiddie console, but you cant put PS2 into one. Sure, there are some other types of games for those systems, but that is what they seem to be oriented around. I have around 30 or so PS2 games, and they are all damn good. My friend has about 10 XBOX games, and they are all good, but thats about all the goodness the system has. GC also has the strage games, and thats nice to have as well =P

More than half of my meager GameCube collection is GameCube-only games! Admitted, you do have to watch out for the "cute" factor with Nintendo's games... I sold Super Mario Sunshine after a day because I just couldn't take what they've done to Mario. But the others are great. Metroid Prime is reason enough alone to have a GameCube (and it's definitely not a "cute" or "kiddie" game), and Wind Waker looks cool too, though I'm waiting for it to drop in price a bit.

Bottom line... I haven't seen anything that inspired the least bit of interest in me to pick up a PS2 or Xbox, but I have had a ton of fun with my GameCube. (I think, especially for "vintage" gamers, the 'Cube holds the most appeal.)

Yeah, that was a bit, erm, unrealistic. Other than that, I'm having a great time. This game is better than the last Bond movie! :D
