StanJr #1 Posted February 20, 2004 I had an early day at work today so I sat down with the Legend of Zelda and played it straight through in about 2 1/2 hours. I never died and only used ONE red potion (but not its blue counterpart) and only then in the 9th Labyrinth. First time I've ever played it straight through like that and so quickly. Here's my proof! What a great game. I'll start the second quest tomorrow, but I've only ever beat that twice, so who knows how I'll do. This little baby is still a classic and totally replayable, no matter how many times I've beat it and no matter how much I know it inside and out! Avid Fan #2 Posted February 20, 2004 Zelda is the opitome of a classic game. I never had my own copy of it back in the day (87-92) but I found one in my neighbors trash back in 95 and finally beat it. I never bothered with 2nd quest because I'm usually Zelda depleted for a while. My friend finally gave Zelda a second choice last summer (he hated the game in its heyday) and loved it, but could not beat it. He thought it was funny that he beat vice city faster than anybody we know, but he cant beat Zelda. But I guess there's many who cant. Shit, I could never beat Zelda 2 on NES using a game genie or on an emulator while making a mockery of the save feature. I just cant beat it. And I beat maniac Mansion dammit!! sigma #3 Posted February 20, 2004 For those of you who don't know (which is like, what, two of you?) use ZELDA as your name and it will unlock the second quest.

JB #7 Posted February 20, 2004 Or if you just thought naming your character after the game would be cool and didn't know there WAS a second quest.
MegaManFan #8 Posted February 20, 2004 I actually made that mistake once playing it, long before the web existed and the info was everywhere, and wondered why the items and maps I remembered didn't match up!
raindog #9 Posted February 20, 2004 After putting my name in Ocarina of Time and getting sick of seeing "Look, it's ROB, the boy without a fairy! ROB, the tree of exposition needs to see you now! Go find a sword and shield ROB!" I decided I'm just going to use Link as a name in any Zelda game I play.
DracIsBack #10 Posted February 20, 2004 It's interesting to play ZELDA now as someone who wasn't into the NES back when ZELDA was big. I now have an NES, a real Zelda as well as a GameCube and the Zelda Collector's disc. I totally dug GOLDEN AXE WARRIOR on the SMS though you can tell it's really nothing more than a better looking ZELDA rip-off.
shep #11 Posted February 20, 2004 ah many of my childhood memories are of hovering around the warm aurora of the television playing through the vast land of Hyrule...
dougy76 #12 Posted February 20, 2004 Zelda is just too cool. I've done the "play through the first quest without stopping/dying" challenge also. Don't think I've ever tried it with three heart containers though. That's pretty impressive! I love the second quest too. Much more challenging than the first one. Someone mentioned Golden Axe Warrior on the SMS. Is that game pretty good? I've never played it. If it's basically a Zelda ripoff, I'm sure I'll love it. May need to get myself a copy of it. DracIsBack #13 Posted February 20, 2004 Golden Axe Warrior is a total ripoff of ZELDA though I played it first and loved it. It seemed original to me, though you'll notice in about 5 seconds that it borrows so heavily from ZELDA. The graphics are much nicer though and it makes good use of the GOLDEN AXE characters. It's also pretty rare though - it came out around the time of the SMS II launch and was one of the last SMS games made for the US. The last copy I got was as a fluke through Ebay. Someone mistakenly listed it as a PAL title so I won the bid, knowing it would work fine on an NTSC SMS.

Don't think I've ever tried it with three heart containers though. That's pretty impressive! Actually, I just remembered you get an extra heart container everytime you get a triforce, so you can't beat it with only three hearts. That screenshot must have been your state at the beginning of the second quest, right?

It's become almost a tradition/obsession whilst playing any Zelda (I play them all) to put my name as Link and always in the third save slot if I have the option. Kids love to put their names (on games that allow you to do so). Makes them feel important I guess. It's also not a good idea to change names in RPG's, specially if you plan to look for outside help (talk with friends, FAQs) later on.

A great reason why in almost every game where I could put my name it.. it was almost always "YOU ASS" or "You pussy" or "You piece of shit".. you get the idea. It doesn't work in a couple of contexts, but when they say stuff like "Go find a sword and shield YOU PIECE OF SHIT" it's pure comic gold Yes.. sometimes I'm easily amused
DracIsBack #19 Posted February 20, 2004 I once got in a bunch of trouble for someone else doing that. I was playing that old SIERRA game "Space Quest II" when I was a kid. As with all Sierra games, you had to enter your name so it could address you by it. Well, one day I couldn't get around a certain part so I decided to open up a saved game that was just past the point that was giving me grief. Anyway, I played this "new" game as my own for a while, making good progress. Anyway - I got to a point in the game way I crashed my space ship or something. Just as my mother walked in, this message appears on the screen saying, "Way to go YOU F*&^ing JERK" and my mother's jaw hit the floor. Turns out it was a saved game by her coworker. It's so appropriate when the members of your party start yelling at her. "BITCH, you stole my materia!" Hysterical.

Xot #22 Posted February 20, 2004 Don't think I've ever tried it with three heart containers though. That's pretty impressive! Did he do it with 3 hearts or did it just go back to 3 hearts for the beginning of the 2nd quest? You don't HAVE to pick up the heart containers dropped by the bosses. The reason it's not possible to beat the game with three hearts is because you must have the Magic Sword (the others won't damage Ganon) and in order to wield the Magic Sword you must have twelve hearts. It's possible to get the magic sword and NOT get the first two. Very difficult, but possible. And yes, once you get to the second quest it drops you back to three hearts. There's another way to cheat the system, though. If you press Up and Start on controller 2 while paused, the game ends and does not record a number on the counter. So if you catch yourself immediately before you die, you can continue as if you DID die but it isn't counted. I have gone through the entire first quest like Stan describes, but never timed myself. The second quest, while I have finished it, I was never able to do in one sitting. The last four dungeons are just too rough.

This is wicked tough to do though and do it EVERY time you die, its much easier to just beat it straight through.

Any sword would hurt Ganon in the original. Are you sure about that? I may have to re-check. I *KNOW* the manual says you must have the Magic Sword and I could have sworn I tried beating him with the wooden sword once and hits just didn't register. Maybe I'm mis-remembering... in which case it WOULD be possible to beat the game with three hearts (or perhaps four or five ... there may be a boss or two positioned such that you can't avoid the HC).
