maibock #1 Posted February 24, 2004 Anyone familiar with this game? I need a hand here. Went into a cave to explore - used the torch - the area around me lit up - I explored, but when I went back to the entrance there were stairs. Not realizing I went down the stairs to enter the cave, I decided to explore - Well, I exited the cave and when I went back into the cave it was dark once again and apparently I had used the torch up since it's not in my inventory and it's not lit up. My problem is that I can't leave the cave nor move around the cave because of no torch. Any ideas? Luckily I was playing it on an emulator during lunch so I've saved the state, but I'd rather not start over again, gaining exp points was painful enough. Thanks! Gabriel #2 Posted February 24, 2004 If you didn't move, you should have been able to use the stairs to exit. If you did move you're pretty much screwed unless you want to bounce against walls for a few hours trying to find the stairs. You might as well start over at your last saved game. maibock #3 Posted February 24, 2004 Ohhhh I get it. So I was actually moving around then? Great I'll find the exit since it was a small area, Thanks! Any ideas how to get gold quickly?
Tempest #4 Posted February 24, 2004 If you did move you're pretty much screwed unless you want to bounce against walls for a few hours trying to find the stairs. ' Ahh how many hours of my youth did I waste doing that... Bump bump bump.... Any ideas how to get gold quickly? In DW1? Not really. Some monsters give you more gold than others, so you can hunt in areas where they appear. If you're strong enough you can try and take on gold golems for 200 gold each (I think). chrisbid #5 Posted February 24, 2004 later in the game (in the teen levels i think), you get the radiant spell, which gives you a better viewing area than torches do
StanJr #6 Posted February 24, 2004 fight, fight, fight. Might be one of the few downsides to DW, too much leveling up not enough straight adventure. Still a great early RPG.

I remember getting romped by that guy the first time.

I remember getting romped by that guy the first time. Hmm Not sure. It was in the one due south from the town in the North East of the main castle. You had to go through those marshes(fire?) which hurt you as you move through them.

Maybe it wasn't a river, I just remember you went in the north entrance surrounded by the fire-marsh stuff, and there was a separate south exit where you would come out on the other side of a body of water on a different island. The dragon in that cave guards something and I won't say what it is...

I kind of figured that there wouldn't be a dragon sitting in there for no good reason and it does look like there's a cave entrance(or exit) across the river
NE146 #13 Posted February 27, 2004 I suggest... if you're going to play something from that time period like Dragon Warrior 1.. to ABANDON SHIP and go play SMS Phantasy Star 1!!! It's a far better game from that time period. And at least when you're lost in a dungeon it's a lot more fun and actually DOABLE since it's in First Person Perspective Hook it up via an emulator or something

No. Dragon Warrior is so much more fun. And faster. Geeze.. it takes FOREVER to switch to people talking, the command menu. And when an enemy attacks, where's the SURPRISE? DRAGON WARRIOR FOREVER! Phantasy Star can kiss my dragon battling ass.
NE146 #15 Posted February 27, 2004 Dragon Warrior is so much more fun. And faster. Geeze.. it takes FOREVER to switch to people talking, the command menu. True.. but usually they only say one thing. And that's it. There's barely any talking aside from that and hardly any people. But at least there's nice graphics when you do it. Point taken though. And when an enemy attacks, where's the SURPRISE? huh? It's a surprise like in any rpg. Phantasy Star is exactly the same as it is in Dragon Warrior, or early FF where you walk around and get randomly attacked. So I'm not sure what you're talking about Actually it's even more startling especially in the first person view Dungeons. DRAGON WARRIOR FOREVER! Phantasy Star can kiss my dragon battling ass. Everyone can have their opinion. But did you even finish Phantasy Star? As for me, I finished all NES Dragon Warriors. A COUPLE of times And I can say that Dragon Warrior (although I enjoyed it).. felt like such a bad watered down Phantasy Star. And I'm not talking about "in retrospect", I played both games IN THEIR TIME when they were state of the art. Dragon Warrior 1 still loses to Phantasy Star 1! (Notice I dont say Dragon Warrior can kiss my ass.. because I still like it) But PS1 is still far better. And as far as Dragon Battling.. let's take a look shall we? DW Dragon vs PS1 Dragon Any questions?
chrisbid #16 Posted February 27, 2004 pick up Phantasy Star Collection for Game Boy Advance, its a terrific compilation that is 20 bucks well spent if you like old school RPGs. As for Dragon Warrior, i enjoyed the first one when it came out, but it came a year after Phantasy Star did in the US, all the gaming press Phantasy Star got prompted Nintendo to finally start pushing RPGs, so we finally got Dragon Warrior and Final Fantasy in 1989 and 1990 respectively (by this time Phantasy Star II on the Genesis blew all three of them away)
Jasoco #17 Posted February 27, 2004 SURPRISE! You know, SURPRISE! In DW, when I am walking aroung, ALL OF A SUDDEN a loud sound, the screen changes and I'm confronted! It scared the shit out of me as a kid. In PS, the music doesn't even change until the enemy is on screen. And it takes forever to even switch to the enemy. Phantasy Star can KISS MY ASS! And I'll take the Castles and Knights over the futuristic city any day. Futuristic City? WTF kind of RPG is THAT? Plain overworld map. DW looked a lot nicer when viewed as a whole. And First Person dungeons? Ooh.. what a gimmick! Bah! All PS has on DW is graphics.
Xot #18 Posted February 27, 2004 All I have to say on the subject is Dragon Warrior 1 is is too short and FAR too easy. I've beaten the entire game with my bare hands. Literally, I never picked up a single weapon. Phantasy Star is neither short nor easy.
Jasoco #19 Posted February 27, 2004 DW was the first RPG I ever played and the last one I ever enjoyed. The closest I can get to another RPG is Final Fantasy V on the Anthology. Even FFVI doesn't appeal to me. And I never got into VII, VIII, IX, XI, X-2, etc. Not even the first. So for me, all I need is Dragon Warrior 1 (I can also play 2 or 3 to an extent.) and FFV. None of the PS games appeal to me. And PSO is just not my kind of game. MMORPG? Stupid idea. Where's the REAL story? Booooo... Hisss....
chrisbid #20 Posted February 27, 2004 All PS has on DW is graphics. and characters, plot, music, imagination, more save slots, story boards, multiple party members and enemies, and a chick in a pink skirt as the hero, rather than some dufus in blue
Clint Thompson #21 Posted February 27, 2004 DW was the first RPG I ever enjoyed... and played the hell out of until my Nintendo freaked out and deleted my save games ! Great game... I played it on emu about a year ago... still fun!
NE146 #22 Posted February 28, 2004 PSO is just not my kind of game. I don't dig PSO either And once I got past PS3, it was hard for me to play ps4... matter o' fact I didn't. My ONLY point here is. DW1 vs. Phantasy Star 1? Man there is ZERO contest. He's playing DW1... If he's willing to sit on his ass and play a RPG from that time frame, I'm just saying he'd be better off playing PS1. However Xot has a point. DW1 is easy. PS1 is pretty hard. So if you're just looking for light affair, then yeah DW1 it is
Clint Thompson #23 Posted February 28, 2004 no way! haha.. DW1 Rules! If he's got a DC I recommend Record of Lodoss War (aside from the slowdowns once in a while)
chrisbid #24 Posted February 28, 2004 I don't dig PSO either And once I got past PS3, it was hard for me to play ps4... matter o' fact I didn't. Phantasy Star IV is quite good, and unlike the other games in the series it is on the easy side. A lot of people like PSIV the most out of any of the games. PSO was great before hackers ruined the game on the Dreamcast
Atari_Worshipper #25 Posted February 28, 2004 I miss the original Phantasy Star. I wish I still had it... I traded it and 3 other games for an intellevision w/ 40 plus games so it was an alright deal, I just need to go out and buy it again.
