getting xbox live

Recommended Posts

I've had Live since it was new and I'm honestly not impressed. Let me explain why, because everyone else that I know who has it loves the thing.

I've been a PC gamer since the 8088 so I grew up with games being online like FPS's and MMO's like Ultima Online etc. So multiplayer is no big deal to me. The other people who I know that have Live never did the online gaming thing so it's an incredible new experience for them.

If you've already done PC online gaming then Xbox Live isn't really a big deal. But if you've never done 24-hour sessions of DAoC or UO then I imagine it'll be an amazing experience.

Recomended games:

Wolfenstein

Mechassault

Is it slower than using a PC or the same? Is it harder to use? The fact that it isn't unique shouldn't matter as long as it's just as good. For people who like online gaming, it's nice that they can connect using a console. It wasn't that long ago when consoles were cut off from the world.

MechAssualt comes with the Xbox Live kit these days. There are a bunch of great Xbox Live games like Unreal Championship, MechAssualt, Ghost Recon, Phantasy Star, Wolfenstein and a bunch of sports games. It's sometimes hard to find a good game on some of the older games because not that many people are playing. Try some of the newer games that are really good like Rainbow Six 3, Crimson Skies and Project Gotham Racing 2. PGR2 is awesome if you enjoy racing games.

I think it's easier to set up and use than PC network gaming, and it's about the same speed. But then I'm pretty familiar with networks so someone who's never configured one before may get confused with things like IP's and subnets.

The fact that it isn't unique shouldn't matter as long as it's just as good.

Well, for me uniqueness is important. I've been gaming way too long and honestly I'm pretty jaded. The last few years my video game purchases have dropped dramatically (I still have Secret Weapons over Normandy sitting here unopened since xmas). After so many years of gaming just nothing is new to me anymore, it feels like I was just playing Wing Commander 3 and Ultima 7 (or Starflight for that matter) yesterday.

I think I've spoiled myself because unless something is really different I'm just not impressed by the game. That's why I picked up Steel Battalion and DDR, for something different.

But like I said in my first post: most people really seem to like it so I think 90% of the time it's a good investment.

I have 15 online games so I will rate them in my opinion for fun.....

Whacked! (full version) - Is short lived fun - good for 5 minutes only

Moto GP (full version) - great example of Live gaming at its best - Takes a long time to master the bikes control but very satisfying if you do.

Mech Assault - I loved this and used to be a top player - but don't touch it anymore

Ghost Recon - FPS which takes itself too seriously, It's ok but I never really got into it.

NHL 2K3 - Hockey is not my game so I can't rate it fairly

NBA 2K3 - Again basketball is not my game so I will not comment

Castle Wolfenstein - A great laugh and some really good gaming can be had. Especially good for team games. - but not the best FPS by a long way.

Phantasy Star Online - I've only played offline so I can't comment

Midnight Club II - Great laugh, but everyone cheated to get the best cars which ruins the offline experience.

Midtown Madness 3 - More fun than Midnight Club online, but less fun offline.

Crimson Skies - Fantastic game online and offline. Very solid shoot-em-up

Rainbow Six 3 - Looks and feels very good - Recommended highly

Links 2004 - Excellent, but too many gamers quit games early - good for XSN sports tournaments.

Project Gotham Racing 2 - Excellent in every way.

Counter Strike - Good level designs and easy to get into - recommended.

XIII - Not very good online - I don't own this one anymore - I don't miss it either. (It is a very good offline game though)

So its a mixed bag and these are only my opinions but it may give you some idea on what games to buy/avoid depending on what type of games you like.

Well I got the whole package today but I havent been able to set it up cause my parents are mega pissed that I would have to use there credit card. I was under the assumtion that a one year subscription card meant that I wouldnt have to use a credit card  oh well I heard them talking in there room before they went to bed and they sounded sorry for me and said that they would probally do it tomorrow. While I was buying online games I got Splinter cell and rainbow six 3, I think this weekend ill also pick up counter strike, ghost recon and wolfenstein.

Splinter Cell is content download only, you can't play it online against others.

There are 3 main reasons for the credit card.

1. When your year runs out MS can just deduct another years sub automatically.

2. If you want premium downloadable content they can deduct the amount. (only Mech Assault and Links 2004 have used this so far) Most content is free of charge.

3. Monthly subscription games. (Only Phantasy Star Online at the moment and it wasn't very successfull because of it).

Clocks top tips #249 - At the end of your year don't just re-new your sub, best thing is to buy a new Live kit and then re-new using the code in the new kit. The cost is the same or even slightly cheaper but you also get a spare headset.

Dance Dance Revolution for the Xbox also charges for content.
