do you have multiple consoles for each system?

Recommended Posts

in the last few weeks I have bought a Darth Vader 2600, 3 7800s, and a Colecovision system with almost every attachment(need the driving controller) and some loose games. hell, I even bought a few 7800 consoles for parts. I'm looking at getting another 2600 too. I think I want to try and find another Coleco as a just in case backup also. what kind of collections do you guys/gals have?

For me, it depends on the system. I have multiples for the Astrocade, 2600, 5200 and NES systems that I have no intention of getting rid of anytime soon. I also have multiples of a few other systems that I keep around as trade bait ot can't get to because they're in storage. For some other systems like the PS2 and Dreamcast, I'm satisfied with one.

For some systems, I own many consoles (more than two!) This includes the 2600, 5200, 7800, ColecoVision, Intellivision, Atari 8-bit computers, Vic-20s, C64s, and TI 99/4as. For many others, such as the Oddysey 2, TG-16, Jaguar, Lynx, NES, Vectrex, and so forth, I have at least two specimens of. And I have many single consoles of rarer systems, although no Adventurevision yet. :)

If I find it cheap I buy it. I keep a couple for myself if i don't have them already and sell/trade the rest. In the last month or two I have found about 10 NES systems, 4 SNES, 7 Sega, 5 2600, 4 N64, 3 Intellivision, Xbox and a few others.

I've got one Model 1 Genesis/Sega CD setup with 32X and one model 2 Genesis/Sega CD setup. I was originaly thinking about selling the model 2 setup..but I changed my mind and decided to keep both setups.

I've got a few extra model 1 Genesis units.

I've got both a model 1 and model 2 Lynx. I should get a comlynx cable.

I would like to get a 2nd GameGear and a link cable for two player purposes.

I have two Apple //c computers.

I've only got extras for computers. I've got an Atari 130XE, and an Atari XL (I can't remember the model number). I have about four TI-99/4A computers.

Lately, i've been thinking about getting some backup consoles. Especially stuff like the Jaguar, so I can link two together and play Doom. But it's not a high priority to get multiples of consoles right now.

I've two original model Sega Genesis systems, two 3rd model Sega Genesis, two original SNES, two later SNES, a top-loading NES, two or three original NES, two TurboGrafx16, two N64, a beautiful four-port 5200, a trash two-port 5200 some bastard on eBay screwed me on (Comic Book Guy: "Worst packing EVER."), a couple 2600 VCS converters for the 5200, and two PlayStations.

Then there's the single GameCube, PS2, O^2, 2600, and ... eh... a few things I can't remember.

So a few questions that seem obvious to me, if someone were to find this out that wasn't a video game dork (though I really don't play that much...).

Q1: Why did you buy so many of the same system?

A1: Steak sauce.

Q2: No, really. Why did you buy so many?

A2: I religiously visit yard sales during the summer in search of oddities, interesting decorative items, and a few things I collect, one of them being older video games. Yard sales tend to sell old games at fair (or ridiculously fair) prices. Occasionally a game system will make an appearance, and sometimes it'll be an extraordinary buy. Once, I bought a box full of a complete NES, TurboGrafx16, a handful of NES games, a few SNES games, and a grip of TG16 games for the low low can't-pass-this-one-up price of $5.00.

Q3: Why did you keep them?

A3: I'm sure I'll sell off a few one day, but for now the uses I have actually found for the systems are: spreading them around (in college, had an NES in the newsroom, and an SNES in the SGA office), for friends who want to play or recollect their old favorites, and replacement parts/systems in case one breaks. The spare PSX is scheduled for a modification so I can play a handful of foreign games I've had my eye on.

Q4: Where do you keep them??

A4: Fortunately, most are small enough to put in a plastic grocery bag and tuck into a nook of my closet or under the bed. Something larger, though, like an Odyssey^2, I would only ever own one of due to its enormous size, especially with that Voice module...

Q5: When will it end?

A5: It probably won't. If I see a good deal, on a good thing, even if I own ten of that thing already, I'll get another one. Like I mentioned in an earlier answer, I'm sure I'll eventually sell off a few. For a while, I would grab up NES and SNES systems at yard sales and trade them in to Funcoland. $5 out of my pocket for a yard sale NES = $35 trade credit. Shame they stopped doing that.... hm.

Q6: What the hell kind of dork are you?

A6: A big one.

I have 6 Atari 2600's... the only official variant that I don't have, strangely, is the regular 4-switch model.

I have 3 C-64's... each in various states of brokenness. One has a key broken off, I think one has a fried I/O chip, and the other has a really dirty keyboard. Luckily, I have a C-128 that I use instead.

I have 3 Amiga's... a 500, a 1200 (needs a replacement HD), and a 3000 (needs some software cleanup since one of it's hard drives was removed for something else).

I have 2 (original) Gameboy's... I forget why, but my parents bought me a second one back when they were still somewhat popular. Both of them have somewhat scratched up screens, and I have a GBA, so they don't get a lot of use.

I think that's all. I keep meaning to pick up a second Genesis, since I only have the second model. I should also probably get a new NES, since the one I have is in really poor shape (I got it for $2, so it's not such a loss).

Remember that the original Genesis is the only model compatible with the Power Base Converter, if you ever plan to do anything with Master System games, and there are surely enough MS games worth owning to look into one to play them.

3 2600s 4 switchers.

2 of which I always thought were broke. Turns out, 1 had a faulty power connector. The spring in there was almost flat causing no connection when you would plug in the adapter. The other displayed alot of fuzz and white noise. I put one of those Phone to F adapters on it and seemed to clear it up. So now 3 fully operational 2600s!

3 NES

1 Genesis II

1 Intellivision II

1 SNES

1 PS2

1 VIC20

2 (that I gutted to make 1) C-64's

I'm still looking for a 5200. And if I buy another 2600, I would like to get a sixer. And as far as buying another or duplicate of a system I already have, It will have to be either really too cheap to pass up, or complete and boxed.

I used to have multiples of most of the systems I was into, but have sold off alot of them, because they never get touched and they're just clogging space. I believe I still have an extra 5200 and Intellivision though.

I bought multiples of my CD based systems as backups. You can buy replacement CD drives for PS, DC etc. but it costs just as much to buy a used working system. I have too much money invested in my DC library to not have a working DC in the future. I hope someone comes up with perfect emulators for these cd based systems because their failure rates are very high. I don't think there will be very many working in 20 years if you use the system and don't just keep it in temp controlled storage.
