StanJr #1 Posted March 7, 2004 A lot of people here bad mouth Super Cobra like its Pac-man. Now I had the game as a kid and loved it. I thought it was a tough navigation game with some intense shooting action. Then I grew up, and heard all the bad talk about Super Cobra, and thought maybe it wasn't as good as I remember. But I picked it up today at a little place called O'l Buddy's Knives and Games (no joke!) and when I got home I sat down and played it for a couple of hours. Guess what, it still RULES! This game does NOT suck. Sure, the shooting is a bit weak, but its a fun flying game with some tight spots and quick shooting action (just like I remember). What does everybody hate about this game? SS #2 Posted March 7, 2004 What does everybody hate about this game? I never quite understood the bad press that it gets either. It certainly wouldn't make my top ten list but there's a hell of a lot worse games in my collection.
ATARIPITBULL #3 Posted March 7, 2004 I love parker brothers super cobra, I loved the arcade machine and I think parker brothers did a good job with there 2600 version.
Rocko #4 Posted March 7, 2004 My only gripe is the fact that sometimes the chopper moves too slow, and you hit a wall because the caves are moving too fast. But after a few time playing it, I can get into the game and get past those points.
Goochman #5 Posted March 7, 2004 My only gripe with Super Cobra was Scramble was a much better game IMHO and SC was the only home port. The 2600 version is fine, the Atari 800 version sucks eggs.
Tempest #6 Posted March 7, 2004 The 2600 version is fine, the Atari 800 version sucks eggs. Yep. That about sums up my feelings. While I don't think any of the versions were particularly great (then again Parker Brothers was known to cut corners). The Atari 8-bit version just isn't as good as it should be and the 5200 version is even worse because of the joysticks. Tempest
cvga #7 Posted March 7, 2004 I thought Parker Bros did a good job with their 2600 carts. Oftentimes, I think their 2600 library is underrated.
NovaXpress #8 Posted March 7, 2004 I enjoyed 5200 Super Cobra because I had a Wico stick, that made all the difference. The 2600 version is probably as good as it could possibly be. Scramble would have actually been easier to do because it is a simpler game. I don't understand the people who think Scarmble is the better game of the two. Maybe just because it was much more common and popular. Super Cobra was its sequel and really expanded on the game mechanics just like Millipede and Galaga did for their respective inspirations. BassGuitari #9 Posted March 8, 2004 I don't actually own it, but it looks fun, like a game I had for my Commodore 64 (which is long gone ). I just wish it was easier to get ahold of the Odyssey version, which I believe was only released in Europe and Brazil.

kyle #11 Posted March 8, 2004 Not about super cobra but anyway stanjr said he got this game at a place called buddy's knifes and games?? Weird some guy i talked to said he was puting a knifes and games place in Greenville NC. Could it be the same guy???
StanJr #12 Posted March 8, 2004 Funny, but I doubt it. This guy didn't look like he was doing TOO much branching out, if you take my meaning.
Cootster #13 Posted March 8, 2004 This store sounds like the kind of place that'd have some serious rarity hid inside . . . Did it, or was it a Combat Zone? [ObSuperCobra: It's HARD!!! And the Coleco version's the only one that really has the arcade feel . . . That said, compared to all the crappy side-scrolling shooters out there, it's pretty good . . . Better than, say, Space Jockey or Vanguard, IMO, and I like those two.]
StanJr #14 Posted March 8, 2004 oh yeah, this place could EASILY be a rarity gold mine. All games were $1, so taylorcomm and I picked up about 10 games including Spacemaster X-7, Title Match Pro Wrestling, Super Cobra, several mid-rarity Activision games, amongst others. It will definitely be a spot to keep an eye on.
HawgWyld #15 Posted March 8, 2004 I thought Parker Bros did a good job with their 2600 carts. Oftentimes, I think their 2600 library is underrated. Really? I always thought Parker Brothers was well received. After all, games like Empire Strikes Back were dandy, as was Frogger -- one of the better games for the 2600. The only Parker Brothers game I can think of offhand that outright stinks is Reactor.
StanJr #16 Posted March 8, 2004 The only Parker Brothers game I can think of offhand that outright stinks is Reactor. I take it that when you say "Reactor", you mean Strawberry Shortcake's Musical Match-ups....
NovaXpress #17 Posted March 8, 2004 We could have used a 5200 edition of Reactor, but the 2600 one was absolutely awesome. Ugly as sin but playability that never ends. Well for me my memory tells me - Scramble = fun, SC = kinda designed to suck quarters. I can dig that. I feel the same way about Millipede. Nice new features but my games only last a tenth as long. TO make things worse the home ports of SC really sucked. You can't criticize an arcade game for the home translations, expecially when we never got a chance to compare equivalent Scrambles to Super Cobras. The two games were never released on the same system (and I was DYING for Scramble on the AdventureVision).

I take it that when you say "Reactor", you mean Strawberry Shortcake's Musical Match-ups.... Boy, I'm glad I qualified that remark with "offhand." I figured someone would think of another dud. Completely forgot about Strawberry Shortcake....
Adrian M #19 Posted March 8, 2004 The only Parker Brothers game I can think of offhand that outright stinks is Reactor. Reactor? What about Amidar?
HawgWyld #20 Posted March 8, 2004 The only Parker Brothers game I can think of offhand that outright stinks is Reactor. Reactor? What about Amidar? Amidar's no prize, but it's merely a sub-par game. Not a downright horrible one.
Nukey Shay #21 Posted March 8, 2004 Nope...Amidar plays pretty close to how the arcade game works. Skill in that game could definately affect skill in the arcade version.
PaulEMoz #22 Posted March 8, 2004 I love Super Cobra! Super Cobra review See? I love Reactor too, I think that's great fun.
NE146 #23 Posted March 8, 2004 Nope...Amidar plays pretty close to how the arcade game works. Skill in that game could definately affect skill in the arcade version. I disagree my brutha. Now PB Qbert.. you could transfer skill in the home version to the arcade, but PB Amidar? In my opinion, the speed and response of the controls is just too out of wack. It's about as "skill-transferable" as Space Invaders was. Granted... yeah it will give you an idea about the gameplay so you're not totally lost however
raindog #24 Posted March 8, 2004 PB Reactor wasn't up to the level of the arcade game (even using a trackball in joystick mode) but it was really pretty good and captured a lot of the intensity Tim Skelly put into the arcade version. Now that could have been a cool Vectrex port. Too bad MB and PB weren't under the same roof yet.
Thomas Jentzsch #25 Posted March 8, 2004 I love Super Cobra! Super Cobra review See? Yup, already posted that to AA for the reviews section a few weeks ago. BTW: Looks like more reviews (e.g. Cosmic Ark) are coming soon.
