Questions about Neo Geo Pocket Color

Recommended Posts

I just got a Neo Geo Pocket Color today and I was wondering some things about it.

First off, does it have any kind of regional lockout? My initial research points to a "no" answer, but, perhaps, someone here knows otherwise. I want to play Faselei! and it looks like the UK version is my option there.

Next, for link play does each player need to have a cart? Lots of nifty fighters for this system.

That's it for now.

Nope, no regional lockout on the NGPC. That said, you can pick up the US release of Faselei at www.eplayplay.com. The game was ready to ship at the time SNK pulled out of the US market; SNK was forced to return all the games to Japan. after circling around a bit eplayplay.com bought out the stock. I bought my copy from there, and it's all in English and has US patent #'s on the label.. pretty neat!

And yeah, to the best of my knowledge, all of the games require 1 cart per system.

Mine plays both US and Japanese games without a problem. I'm sure a UK version would be the same.

I don't know about the link cable games. If I can find out I'll post again.

I'm thinking of picking up a ngpc myself.

A local mom&pop type videogame store

has them with 6 games included for only

$70! That's a new system and 6 games!

Great price....

You'd better buy that NGPC fast. Those packs with the NGPC and games sold out fast around here. I wanted to get some of the games, but all the stores that carried it sold out pretty quickly. And the games that I really wanted were pack-ins, instead of being in the separate 6-pack of games.

I just was in E.B locally an they still have 2 of the NGPC w/ the 6 games. If anyone is still looking we have an extra NGPC as well as a game or two.

We've had no problems playing US an Japanese games as well.

Very Nice collection Mayhem. :D

I'd like to get a copy of Metal Slug. That and Pac-Man would be the only reason for me to pick up the NGPC package. I'm not into fighting games or golf, so the other games just don't interest me. That's why I haven't gotten around to getting that package yet.

I love Card Fighters Clash. It is of the easy to learn hard to master variety. Is it me or sdoes your opponents get insanely tough? I got up to the semi finals and the first opponent throws out 1000 BP cards like they are candy. How do I ramp up my deck? Also can anyone use the Option card's backup function? I tired to use it but couldn't.

I dunno if it's the same game, but yes there's a version of Evolution for the NGPC. UK/Japan only though... and expensive to buy cos it's fairly rare ($80+) due to being one of the last releases. In my picture, the earlier UK release is in top left and the last is in bottom right...

Wow!! Evolution was released? That's a PRG from the Dreamcast, right?
Yah. It's related to the DC version.

Dunno if it's a "port" the original or if it's a new game, as I've only seen the japanese version.

It's a longshot, but can the DC version of Evolution link up with the NGPC version, like Sonic does on both machines?

Just checked the manual, and it doesn't sadly. You can link with another NGPC to swop and trade items though.

The subtitle of the game is "Eternal Dungeons" if that's any help.

You might want to show me which EB this is in case I have some money leftover to spend after PC5. :D

Another NGPC question. I'll just revive this thread instead of making a new one.

Yesterday I wandered back into the store where I got my NGPC. They initially had 6, and only had 2 remaining, so they're selling like hotcakes for that shop.

One thing I've noticed is there seem to be two different variations of the Pac-Man cart. There's a white label and a blue label. The white label features the modern anime style design of Pac Man. The blue label features the four ghosts.

Is there any difference between these carts? Are they anything other than a label variation? Or were they different country variants?

Possibly. My cart has the anime Pacman on it. Check the product number on the cart itself. Europe/UK release will be 0055, whilst Japan has a 0 on the end of it (00550), and US has a 1 (00551).

I got my UK version of Faselei yesterday. Eplayplay got me my stuff pretty fast. Packaging left a bit to be desired though.

I'm still in the euphoria stage of game purchasing, but I think Faselei is pretty damn cool. It's amazing that its mechanics haven't been in a tactical RPG before. I'm finding it pretty innovative, in a good way, at the moment.

Hopefully it won't get frustrating.

For those uninitiated to Faselei, it's like a mecha based tactical RPG. It's similar to Front Mission 3 or Zone of the Enders: Fist of Mars. The twist is the way you give orders to your units. In most games of this type, you usually can give a "move" order where you move your unit around the battlefield and then an "attack" or other special order where you perform some sort of action. I've played a fair share of tactical RPGs and none of them really deviate from this formula. But Faselei instead gives you 5 action slots to put your actions into, and then you hit OK to execute them. Then your five actions play out.

An action is a thing like taking a step forward, turning to the right or left, firing a weapon, or reloading ammunition. So, an example of a turn's orders might be:

Walk Forward, fire primary weapon, turn right, fire primary weapon, walk forward.

The enemies do this too, and each round's actions play out in a sort of real time. In the example above, if my first firing of my primary weapon killed my target, then my target would never get a chance to execute their actions after the second of the round.

I also got Reversi and stayed up until 2AM last night playing it over and over again. Damn, I'm tired.

Suffice it to say that I finally understand where the love for this handheld comes from. It's great, and I'm finding more and more reasons to resent the fact that it was discontinued out of the blue. I mean, it even had an Ogre Battle game!

And I never even knew this handheld existed during its lifespan.

It has just now become something that collectors are after. Goamespy recently ranked it #1 on their "handhelds that failed" list and that started a purchasing frenzy. Everyplace that I knew that carried them suddenly didn't have any...

If you like puzzle games I highly recomend Oekaki, which plays exactly like Mario Picross on GB. Some of the slot games a good for killing short bursts of time, but not good for long play.

Anyway, I'll see you on eBay ;)

I have been thinking about getting a NGPC, I have been looking on eBay, just seeing what the system had but I have a few questions:

1) What was the time frame the system was out? I don't remember anyone selling it around here, or I must have over looked it.

2) How many game releases were in the U.S. and Japan (seeing no lockout)? MayhemUK said 39 in the UK, I would guess something around that number.

3) Any good fansites to look at?
