What 2600 character has the most colors?

Looking at this image:

 

 

I started to wonder what character had the most colors? Is it possible to have more than 1 color on a scan line (other than just the color itself and the background)?

Well, Snoopy has two colors in that image, and the black isn't part of the background. Either two sprites in one, or a ball/missile sprite were added to them...

I'd guess the character with the most colors isn't even on there . . . Namely Elliott . . . There are at least 4, if not 5 colors there, counting black, since nothing in ET has a black background.

It looks like Big Bird has 5 colors in the above sample:(Assuming there is no black background) Yellow, Black, pink, orange, blue, yellow/grey.

Do "glowing" sprites count? That would be 128 colors

More than one color on one scanline requires using at least one additional object. And due to the color restrictions (only 4 color registers) of the 2600 this will limit the colors of everything else shown on the same scanlines a lot.

 

But you can mix colors by flickering.

No. Although perhaps some of the objects in 'Charger Frogger . . .

 

But, I had forgotten about Private Eye and Pressure Cooker entirely . . . Two completely gorgeous and highly fun games . . .

 

And how did they pull off the enormous guy-and-car sprite in Private Eye, anyhow . . . Not to mention all the other objects/screens, which are masterpieces in themselves (particularly the birds).

 

It looks better than almost any 5200/7800 game, even. . .

I think you could get sprites with more than one color per scanline but you'd have to use up two sprites or put up with flickering.

 

At Phillyclassic, there was this one woman who had "real" (acrylic, I think) paintings of atari characters in all their fat-pixel glory. (I'd find the link if I could find her card again) I'm half tempted to rip off her idea in a less traditional art way, 8 1/2 * 11 (or bigger, if I can find the resources) zoomins of atari screenshots, for my own amusement.

I never said all on the same scan line. If on the same scan line, Big Birds BLUE eyes with his YELLOW body assuming there is a black background, if there is a BLUE background-Yellow Body with his BLACK wing outlines. Not to be an @$$hole pointing out that you don't know what your main question is "I started to wonder what character had the most colors?"

Big bird does have two colors on one scanline, the blue against yellow is correct. His entire body is composed of two sprites, it seems, since he's that wide...

 

But as for multicolored sprites, I still think Snoopy and the Red Baron has the best colors. Not only is Snoopy composed of black and white on the same scanline, against a blue background, but when the score is tallied all the bonus items have two colors per scanline...
