+kisrael #1 Posted March 26, 2004 JoustPong is now for sale at the AtariAge online store...get 'em while they're hot! Get 'em while they're still coming with the limited edition JoustPong T-shirt! My first 2600 homebrew...I'm very happy with how this game came out...it had a very positive reaction at PhillyClassic, I think I managed to sell extra copies at PhillyClassic by people trying it out and me talking it up a bit. video game addict #4 Posted March 26, 2004 They gotz my money too! How do I know it'll come with the T-shirt? There's no number of insock, it isn't gonna let people keep buying once the T-shirts are gone is it? Is it gonna go out of stock when the 15-20 copies that were left sell? Then the page will get updated minus the tshirt offer? I'm just curious how it works. Oh and when is Castle Crisis coming out now?! Me want! me want!! +uosipa llamxew #5 Posted March 26, 2004 I purchased my copy tonight! I hope that I was in time to get the t-shirt! :-) I have been following this game for quite some time; sometimes I was downloading the binary daily from your page. I am very pleased with the finished product. So... any plans for another Atari homebrew?!
Albert #6 Posted March 26, 2004 I purchased my copy tonight! I am very pleased with the finished product. You'll be getting a shirt, no need to worry there.. I'll try to get an accurate inventory of how many are available tomorrow, just to add some pressure to those who might be considering one. ..Al
StanJr #7 Posted March 26, 2004 It was a LOT of two player FUN at Philly and the contest was very cool. Takes Pong and gives it a real kick in the pants! Well done and nice shirt.
MegaManFan #8 Posted March 26, 2004 Bivotar and I had a nice jam session of Joust Pong this afternoon. My only regret is that there isn't a difficulty switch to turn off the pterodactyl once in a while - he can really rape you but good when you're otherwise having a winning game! Like I was saying at Philly, "JoustPong is a harsh mistress."
+kisrael #10 Posted March 26, 2004 I purchased my copy tonight! I hope that I was in time to get the t-shirt! :-) I have been following this game for quite some time; sometimes I was downloading the binary daily from your page. I am very pleased with the finished product. So... any plans for another Atari homebrew?! Thanks! Plans...well, I have a few ideas kicking around. In the immediate future, I'd like to update my 2600 101 Tutorial, and then make a kind of sequel, "2600 Cookbook" with lots of the techniques that have gained popularity on the Stella list, some JoustPong used, some that it didn't. (There are few types of "Cookbook" out there for various programming languages, Java, Perl, and I find it a great way of learning stuff.) In terms of games...one idea would be a port of this old VB game I made, InterGalactic SpaceMan BlastFest. You can download it and see some older, more primitive forms of JoustPong on the old Alien Bill Software page (huh, I should probably update that with 2600 JoustPong!) It has a similar kinetic/gravity feel as JoustPong, except it's with jetpacks, so you don't have to press the button over and over, and you can fly left and right. And, you know, shoot things. For a while, I was thinking of making the sequel to 2600 101 a "walk-thru" of the making of IgSmBf, but I dunno. My biggest concern is if I'll be able to make any kind of decent AI. If I can't make a decent opponent, I'd feel funny about releasing it as a real game. I have some other more pipe-dream ideas. I was thinking of some vaguely Smash Bros Like Game using 4 squares from Adventure and the paddle controllers, where you try to bounce each other off of a platform... another even more pipedreamy game might be another Smash Bros. style game, but some big mashup with tons of sprites from 2600 games. I don't know what copyright issues that might invoke. ("it's a fair use parody! honest!") I'm not sure if its feasible on a 2600 proper, or if I might consider trying to switch to DC. Obviously, whenever somebody starts talking about their big plans for future games (especially Atari ones) take it with a big grain of salt ...even if they have managed to put a full game released. Don't get your hopes TOO far up 'til you see an actual demo :-)
Mr.FoodMonster #11 Posted March 26, 2004 I played Joust Pong on the emulator, great game! One of these days, I'm going to just buy a huge bundle of HBs and be super happy That 4-player adventure block game sounds really cool, I would be intrested in that as well =D
+kisrael #12 Posted March 26, 2004 I played Joust Pong on the emulator, great game! One of these days, I'm going to just buy a huge bundle of HBs and be super happy That 4-player adventure block game sounds really cool, I would be intrested in that as well =D Yeah, it is pretty intriguing, especially if I get the physics right. (I remember fiddling with the physics in the old VB IgSmBf, trying to make the player/player collisions passable. Unfortunately I'm not sure if I still have the source code to that.) I know using the block is a *bit* of a copout, but it's either that or flicker--especially because there will be plenty of time where guys are on the same scanline (Of course, I could always start it with blocks, and try to improve the kernal later.) I'm just trying to think...if I stick with the blocks, what would be a good name for the game? Something that invoked Adventure (to 'excuse' the blocks) as well as maybe Smash Brothers or some 'Sumo' theme. I was thinking just "SLAM" might work. (Maybe have a title screen w/ a rendition of the old ONYX song) But I'm getting way ahead of myself here! First, the 2600 Cookbook.
Big Player #13 Posted March 26, 2004 The Joust Pong tournament at the PhillyClassic was great, even though I made a first round exit. (And I was up 2-0 as well. ) Our own Cafeman won the tournament and BobaFett07728 came in second place.
+kisrael #14 Posted March 27, 2004 The Joust Pong tournament at the PhillyClassic was great, even though I made a first round exit. (And I was up 2-0 as well. ) Our own Cafeman won the tournament and BobaFett07728 came in second place. And got a JP/T-shirt combo and a T-shirt, respectively :-) Yeah, I was hoping for a bigger tournout, in general the lateness of my handing off JoustPong made it tough to get all the publicity that we could've. Still the tourney was just as fun as the one we had at NECG, and I'm glad the round robin we had to set up for the final worked so well.
