Drunk Chessboard

Of all the Atari demos I have seen, this one is probably my favorite. It's incredibly fast, has killer music, great polygon rotation, and the best plasma I have seen on Atari. And it is only 16KB.

Does anybody have some information on it such as how the plasma was created? It looks to have well over 16 colors per raster line and in a high resolution.

the plasma is kind of "simple plasma" which means that it utilities the mode9/11 combined with DLIs... so really nothing special as far as i know... it's interesting that fox' drunken chessboard is so well known... :D

he is definitly one of the best atari coders i know (together with eru) (and that's why he is in taquart... ;))

It's not mixing modes as far as i can see - at least, my own version doesn't use a mixed mode. =-)

tmr, yup you are right...i wrote mode9/11 just because i was not sure if he used mode9 or mode11... but i guess mode9+DLIs for the rainbow colours... and the squares on top should be PMs...

In fact there is one effect with gr.9/11 interleaving in Drunk Chessboard

Well, after the talk, I had to download this demo and try it out on a real Atari. Rather excellent. I watched it with my son (10), and his comment sums it up nicely, "It looks like an Amiga Demo." That's a complement!

After watching that Demo, I watched several others (about twenty). I ran into PAL problems with some of them, but mostly the only problems was that I couldn't understand the scrolling messages because they were not in English-- but you don't need to understand the language to check out the great effects.

Yea, my son knows Amiga. He has an Amiga 3000 in his room with tons of games on the HD. Every once in a while he'll play that thing all day. His favorite game (and one of my too) is Scorthed Tanks. Four people playing that game is a "blast!" I need to try out Pocket Tanks for the PC.
