is there a program that can catalog your carts?

Recommended Posts

I would like to have some type of software that works like dvdprofiler(www.dvdprofiler.com) where you can keep track of all the carts that you have complete with pics and other info. is there anything like this out there somewhere?

or is there any kind of software that can atleast keep track of the carts?

There's a program out there called Cart Commander (sorry, I'm too lazy to find a link... try Google), which is specifically written to catalog cartridges.

It's been a long time since I used it though, and back when I did use it (2 years ago?), I wasn't overly satisfied with it, since it imposed too many constraints. I found using a spreadsheet was much more effective, since I could add arbitrary columns to different systems, and basically do things however I wanted to.

I've been meaning to redo everything in a MySQL database, with a PHP web frontend and all that, but it'll be a while before I get around to it, and it'll pretty much mean re-entering all my data.

Cart Commander is ok, the only major drawback I found is that you can't seem to save the colum order. Or is that just me? I don't collect boxed carts so I don't need info on box or manual condition. It's also confusing to understand the hierarchical structure at first use. Anyhow, I think I'm going to switch to Excel. Cart Commander outputs in .csv format, which Excel can read. When I was trying Cart Commander the first time I also got some uncaught illegal instruction errors...

Cart commander is ok, but I found it too prescriptive. In the end I set my list up in excel because it's easier to add games to the list of known carts, and I can generate a single sheet of the carts I need to stick in my pocket when going to thrift sales.

Do the letters R, T, F and M mean anything to you? :)

Actually, I don't know if it is documented like that, but I can tell you now: go to the "View" menu, and select "Customize..." and you can configure all the columns and their positions etc.

Yes I R.T.F.M. (React To F*ckin Morons? haha ;) ), but those html files included are not really clear to me, I think I'm just dumb. I did notice I could drag the columns to a different position but didn't see how to save the lay-out. Hmm then this will make cart commander a much nicer program, I'll check it out when I get home. Thanks for the info.

Brien King, the author of Cart Commander, has always been receptive to feedback when making improvements to the program. He hasn't updated it in a while, and I'm not sure what his current plans are with regards to the program, but it doesn't hurt to ask. :)

It's not quite a program but I have a complete list of every atari cart listed on AA's rarity guide (US only) typed into my palm pilot. It was all part of my effort to one up my friiend before philly classic. He made a list in a note book of every game he had. So what did I do? I spent every night for a week typing game by game the name, company, label variations and rarity for each game listed. I can e-mail you the file then what you do is highlight the games you have and move them to a seperate list. I found this very handy at PC and now the show is over I don't care who has it. PM me if you want it (of course all this depends on if you have a Palm Pilot) Mine is old and only runs on platfor 3.5 so most anyone should be able to use it. (It's not perfect though, there are mistakes/ missing games)

did you all see this in Excel?:

=SUM(IF(FREQUENCY(MATCH(Title,Title,0),MATCH(Title,Title,0))>0,1))

for Unique titles?

You have to: Insert->name->define and select the entire Title row and then name it Title

Jeez, you guys should be nicer to someone asking an honest question. Oh wait, that didn't happen when I first posted to AtariAge (weepies).

I agree that Excel is probably the easiest solution, and the most accessible. I will work on a format to provide for the tracking of Atari carts. I could not figure out how to spell "cataloguing". Dammit. But I am too proud to resort to spell-check.

Anyway, I for one will try to help out. Even though I am pretty much a moron when it comes to macros and such. But I'll try. Let you know if I achieve anything resembling a workable result.

Database is easier.

SELECT DISTINCT Title FROM Cartriges

Ok, I'm being a smart-ass... :P

What Database do you use? is it MySQL or some M$ product?

Yeah, I do that as well, though I think my formula is a little different:

=SUM(1/COUNTIF(Titles,Titles))

Works the same way -- insert->name->define the range, then add this forumula where you want the unique titles to appear.

Ehm no database at all haha, like I said, I was just being a smart-ass. I have my carts in Cart Commander. I do have my music collection (~1500 original soundcarriers) in a database though. Just a simple MS Access file. MS Access is fine when in a single user, low traffic environment. I'm not accessing it through any webpage, it's just for my personal reference and I have made a report from which I can print a list. Works for me.

A lot of people are using MySQL to track their games these days. It's really easy to set up and then your webpage lists are always up to date.

If your willing to pay for something professional, go here:

collectorz.com

Its not free but I use it because its my personal preference. Its actually quite addictive.

One bad thing though is they have now removed the mobygames search function due to a disagreement with Mobygames....oh well, cover scans still can be downloaded from its other built in searches.
