Modern Text Based Adventures

Recommended Posts

Well unlike older text adventures where you have to follow a story solving puzzles along the way until you reach the end, you could always get involved with a MUD (Multi User Domain) Where you interact with fellow players in a text based world. I got into a MUD heavily about 3 years ago. Very fun.

For more info, Check out this site.

Only one that really matters is zork. ;)

I have too much time invested in this game to care to remember. :ponder:

Well, the obvious link to provide would be The Interactive Fiction Archive... You'll need a Z-Machine interpreter (such as Frotz) to play most of the text adventures there, and a TADS interpreter (sorry, I have no good links here) for some of the others. ".gam" files should be run with a TADS interpreter, and ".z#" (where # is any number, usually 5 through 8 ) should be run with a Z-Machine interpreter.

They are not modern games, but this site has a few text games for

the HP3000 mainframe you can play by telnet:

Adventure is the classic that most will have already heard of, but

Mystery Mansion and Warp are more obscure. I highly recommend

both. Mystery Mansion is a murder mystery which is quite hard and

has a spooky atmosphere. Warp is a huge treasure hunting game

in the style of Zork with a very sophisticated parser for its time and

lots of fun puzzles. Mystery Mansion has recently been ported to the

PC, but you need an HP3000 to play Warp, so I highly recommend

trying it out on telnet if you like that sort of thing.

i've been looking for a good way to play these type of games on my palm pilot, aside from the slow text entry it seems like an ideal game for the platform. i've thought for a while now that theres gonna be a new wave of these type of games for PDAs and phones, there are just so many cool possible features. you could go online and download new chapters that evolve based on the actions of other players...

I was interested in text adventure makers after I played a few text games I got from thrift hunting... but they're not really worth the effort. Nobody will care that you made a text adventure game, even if it's good.

They are not modern games

Sure there are... in fact, the IF Competition (held once a year I believe) ends up getting around 20 entries or so each time it comes up. The entire library at the IFArchive (I posted a link above) is all fan-made text adventures, most of them created within the last few years.

They don't get a lot of recognition, but they're out there.

Sorry, let me clarify: The 3 games I mentioned are not modern games,

but they are quite good and many will have never heard of Mansion and

Warp, so if you are looking for a "new" text adventure experience, feel

free to try them out, even though they are vintage games.

Leather Goddess of Phobos is a good text game, even though it sounds foul. There's nothing even remotely erotic in it. It's somewhat like a 1930s scifi novel.
