Help! I Can't Get Stelladaptor (w/Paddles) To Work In Mame!

Recommended Posts

Here's every variable I can think of...

First of all, I know the paddles work. I use them quite often on my Atari.

I am using Mame32 Version .80.

My operating System is Windows XP.

I tried plugging Stelladaptor into all 4 of my computer's USB ports. It was recognized each time.

I went to control panel ----->Game Controllers and removed my other controller. Stelladaptor is first and only controller on the list.

I calibrated the controller, both the button and dial were working.

The game I tried to play was Arkanoid; I tried several clones of it too.

I tried to use a joystick, it did work on another Mame32 game (Mr. Do.)

Any ideas? I really want to play Arkanoid. :(

Is the use mouse option turned in the games default options? If so turn it off. Just a guess, hope it helps.

I have not used the Stelladptor in Mame32 in Windows, but I have used it in MacMAME, with both paddles and joysticks. In MacMAME there is a dialog where you need to configure the paddle controller by assigning the paddle to a particular axis (X or Y) as well as the fire button. I know Joe Grand has tested the Stelladaptor in Mame32, so I'll ask him to post a response here.

I've used Stelladaptor with Mame32 on Win2K without a problem. But, I honestly can't remember what I did, if anything, to make it work.. I know that I had to set something in the "Controllers" tab of the "Default Game Properties" - I think it was disabling the "mouse" and "steady key" support and enabling the "joystick input" (which then also let me adjust the "analog joystick deadzone" slider bar). Of course, "lightgun support" should be disabled, too.

It most definetely works, though, and since Stelladaptor is recognized on your Windows machine, it must be a configuration issue. I'm pretty sure it only works with ROMs that have the "Trackball" selection listed as "yes" (like Arkanoid).

Hope that helps,

Joe

OK, I finally remembered what I also had to do to get MAME32 working.

Go to Microsoft.com and grab the latest version of DirectX. MAME32 uses some of the DirectController (or something like that) support to handle certain controllers, and that allowed me to edit the values in MAME32's Controller tab.

I would also suggest RESETTING all your calibration data for the Stelladaptor game controller from the Window's Game Controller control panel app back to the defaults. You don't need to calibrate the joystick and driving controller (which is essentially treated a joystick, as it's a encoder with 4 discrete positions - read the manual for more), and it's hard to calibrate the paddle, since one paddle controls the X and one paddle controls the Y. Honestly, you won't need to use the Calibration within Windows, anyway.

As long as you're seeing the + move when you move the various controllers within the Window's Game Controller settings, which you are, then the Stelladaptor hardware is functioning properly and it's a matter of configuring whatever application software you are using to handle the controller data.
