Best Turn-based Strategy Game

Recommended Posts

Been playing a lot of Advance Wars 2 for GBA lately, but I've been looking for a good one similar to that for the PC. Any suggestions? :?

SSI's wonderful yet overlooked title, People's General. The story is very interesting and the gameplay is top par.

"One of the best things this game has going for it is the story, which is very realistic and scary in that it could actually happen. In the near future, as the United States and Russia slash their military budgets and Russia erupts with internal problems, China continues to grow stronger and eventually decides to 'reclaim traditional Chinese territories'. When they attack south-east Asia, the US sends the Seventh Fleet, the main Asian force, off of Taiwan to help protect the island and warns the Chinese to pull out. In response, the Chinese attack and sink the American carrier USS Abraham Lincoln, claiming it was in Chinese waters. The outrage over this unprovoked attack causes the President to ask Congress for a declaration of war, which is soon followed by most of the United Nations. World War Three is now at hand. "

The first X-com or one of the General series (fantasy general was the best of that series IMHO.)

I also liked Chaos Gate and there are a ton of other SSI games that are great.

Civilzation II. Nuff said. Panzer General, Steel Panthers, X-Com, Battlefield series are good in too but Civ and its succesors (Alpha Centauri) are the gold standard.

Civilization is a building game. I play II and III every once in a while but I don't have much patience for building games (the reason why I dislike RTS games...more about building and zerging than any real strategy.) As far as building games go, the Civ series is excellent.

That's not to discount it as a strategy game, because it is. I just focused on wargames in my reply as it sounds like Advance Wars is a wargame.

Heros of M&M and it's ilk (Disciples comes to mind) are also good if you like that type of game. Personally, I hate starting over in each scenario of what is supposed to be a continuous campaign. It's also more about exploring than strategy.
