Powering off from the Main Screen

Recommended Posts

For every system I own, I do this everytime. I think I read or theorised that turning off any game from the title screen is easier on your hardware than if you just flick it off during play, thereby slightly prolonging the life of the system.

Any one have feedback on this? Urban myth?

I guessing but I'd say it's a myth. It's not like the hardware is in some mechanical cycle so shutting it off in the middle is grinding gears or something.

I turn off my consoles at any time I wish - I have never had a console fail on me yet.

Must be a myth - although I've never heard of it before

Don't blame you for wondering, I thought for years that starting my car's engine with the A/C compressor running was bad for it. While ago, read a newspaper auto column that said it doesn't make a difference in newer cars at all.

Still can't help the old habit. But there's no harm in not causing extra harm to the machines. So I'll deal.

Most cd based systems spin the cd all the time as well.

The only bad thing I can see happening is if you turn it off while the game is acessing the memory card.

Shannon, I've noticed that the constant CD rotateage you mentioned is quite true. Especially on GTA3/Vice City on my PS2, the drive thrashes so constantly that I can hear it moving the laser assembly around the whole time I'm playing. But I have the very first US model of PS2. Hopefully, Sony might have addressed the issue in newer revisions of the hardware.

Course, on my old PC, the opposite was the case. I think Gates & Co. actually had to release a patch for Windows Old-School to KEEP the drive spinning, cause good old DOS-pretty-face couldn't access the CD anymore after it had spun off for power saving.

Yet another tale from my mental archives of yore that about zero people will give a whit about. Again, post count, --> +. Self deprecation, +++++++^.
