neglected 80's coin-ops on modern consoles

Recommended Posts

with all of the classic game compilations of the past few years, there are still quite a few popular games of the early-mid 80's that have yet to be seen on any modern platform. Since the ownership rights of these games are probably scattered all over the place, this is just a pipe dream, but ill list a few games for starters and feel free to comment and/or add other games (try not to go overboard)

Q*Bert

This game (and its official hack Faster Harder More Challenging Q*Bert ) would be the centerpiece of this collection. There was a modernized version of the game made for PSX, DC, and PC a few years ago, but it lacked soul, and the "classic" version included used the modern graphics engine and left gameplay sluggish.

Zoo Keeper

Nintendo may have a fit, but this was the first video game where you had to rescue a girl name Zelda :D . The game itself was very fast paced and was well received among arcade gamers of the day. It never did get a proper treatment on a home console.

Mr. Do!

This semi-popular game spun off a couple of sequels. Part Dig Dug and part Pac-Man, you guided a clown around an underground realm, picking up all the cherries on the stage. You were armed with one shot that would ricochet off of walls until it hit an enemy. The Colecovision got a decent port of the game, and there was an SNES game that i have yet to try.

Pengo

This forgotten Sega Classic is tougher than it looks. Its half action/half puzzle gameplay along with its decent music made this game a minor hit in the day. The Game Gear got a port of this in the late 90's, but it lacked the detail in graphics of the original.

Burgertime!

You know, some people may say that material in 1980's video games are tame by today's standards, but in today's politically correct/lawsuit happy environment, you would never see a game like this be made today. Hamburgers are too fattening, and kids are already playing video games rather than outside playing, so Joe Liberman would probably have this banned. The last port of original game was on the NES, while the GameBoy got Burgertime Deluxe, which was ok but story driven (blech!)

there are tons more, but this is a good five to start with :)

Q*Bert always sucked on home consoles because of the controls (NES and SNES versions at least). I think it's one of those games were you really need a joystick controller, so it might work well with the analog thumbsticks on newer consoles. Mr Do!, Pengo, and Burgertime were some of my favorite arcade games too.

I'd also like to see APB, WWF Wrestlefest, Avengers (not the Marvel comic), Ivan's Stewart's Super Off Road, the Simpsons, and a ton of other games get arcade perfect ports to the modern systems.

Burgertime was released on one of the PSX classic games anthologies.

I think Pengo was released on the Super Famicom. There's a pretty decent arcade port of it on the 5200.

I want a SEGA ARCADE CLASSICS pack, with Congo Bongo, Turbo, Zaxxon and Super Zaxxon, Tac-Scan, Space Fury, Shinobi, Afterburner, and Golden Axe.

And the forgotten Sega classics:

Eliminator (awesome vector action)

Space Odyssey (one of my favorite old shooters)

Zektor (the best vector game you've never played- and the first to use an animated graphic of a babe to sell itself)

Pig Newton (cause its totally stupid)

Up N Down (I still play this on the CV)

Mister Viking (oh so rare and fun)

And am I the only one who remembers Future Spy? It's the second Zaxxon sequel.

And all thoise mid-80s greats: Hang On, Fantasy Zone, Heavy Metal, Alien Syndrome, Outrun, Quartet, After Burner.

Damn, SEGA needs to start releasing those comps.

I'm sure you all know this.. and it probably doesn't really count anyway, but all these games (including Major Havoc sans spinner of course) are highly and very very much playable on MameOX which is the xbox port of Mame which excels at classic arcade game emulation on the tv. 'Course the emulation is only as good as the current pc versions of Mame are.. which sometimes sucks, but hey you take what you can get :P To be quite honest a lot of times they look a little better than even the official compilations.. for example I like Pacman emulated on Mameox vs. playing it via the official Namco Anthology on the Xbox. The games also compare extremely favorable to the ones on Midway Arcade Treasures. But anyway, like I said, it probably doesn't really count to what you're talking about.

Ooh did you see the NES hack Racoon Lad did not that long ago? Fixed up the crapola graphics. :)

PengoThe Game Gear got a port of this in the late 90's, but it lacked the detail in graphics of the original.

This brings up a question I had, what the heck is that Genesis/Megadrive Pengo rom that's floating around... anyone know the story behind that? :? i.e. was it an official release?

I always liked Cosmic Avenger, Zaxxon (or Super Zaxxon), Venture and Scramble.

I wish those got better treatment...

I second that Sega Arcade Classics. Hell I'd buy it just for Congo Bongo. Same goes for Zaxxon.

There could be a chance that Burgertime will be on the nexy Midway Arcade Treasures, as they released it for PS1

There was a version of MR. DO released on the Neo Geo (mvs format) a few years back, appropriately titled NEO MR. DO.

Pretty good game...retained most of the elements found in the original and expanded on it a bit, though it had some bizarre "gender changing" power-up that I found odd.

we all know that MAME does a fantastic job, but with ROM sites being pulled off the net each day and some of the pains involved, whether its setting up a modded xbox, or the constant updates to romsets, PCs, and the emulator itself, it can be a chore. A lot of us in the community are willing to pay to play classic games. How many people here have Activision Anthology? Im willing to bet its a high percentage, and im also willing to bet that most of us that have it also have a good number (heck, if not all) of the actual Activision 2600 carts in our collection.

I never knew about the mega drive version of Pengo, but i think Sega sold the american rights to their early arcade games to midway. Thats why we never saw it.

The SNES version of Mr. Do! is kick-ass. Two player simultaneous mode as well.

You all know that there's a bunch of Sega games within Shenmue, right? The original game for the Dreamcast contains Space Harrier and Hang On. Shenmue 2 for the XBox and European Dreamcast has those two plus Outrun and Afterburner II.

One can dream about Pengo in Shenmue III. :ponder:

If a Shenmue III ever sees the light of day, we're bound to see Sega coin-op games from the 1988-1989 time frame, in my opinion. Nothing wrong with that mind you...Golden Axe, Shinobi, Altered Beast would be excellent arcade inclusions I must say! :)

Not sure what exactly you're implying with that ;) But even if you're not, for the record for anyone else reading this thread, I am one of the most obsessed classic gaming compilation nuts you can find and have purchased them EN MASSE. Think of Phosphor Dot Fossil's collection and you're somewhat close to my collection. I love em and yes, I do purchase them. :P

..But as such (a nut) I just wanted to express to most of you how much the Xbox emu's really rock :) To me, it's all the same thing.. it's game playing. To a lot of us, getting emu's is not exclusive of purchasing and vice versa, but rather just another part of a collection of all types of video gaming goodness. but yeah I guess you just have to be a little fanatical to get all of the stuff you mentioned  It aint all that hard or a chore.. but you do have to know where to look so it does get a little esoteric a bit...

A little back on subject... the arcade games that do need to be put onto a modern console compilation? NINTENDO games. I would love to see a Donkey Kong, Donkey Kong Jr., Donkey Kong 3, etc. compilation pack with arcade perfect renditions. And no of course the GBC, and NES ports don't count. Now there's some games that have been neglected and even worse, diluted by all their brethren and ports :P

Klax is on MAT ;)

A Sega set is overdue, they are one of the top coin-op companies up

until the present day. Golden Axe :ponder:

Nintendo should stop gouging its GBA owners and make a set of its

classics, Punch Out! I'd love to see again.

Others:

Qbert's Qubes - quite good sequel

Mr Do's Castle - a forgotten gem

Double Dragon

TMNT

Tempest (or at least Tempest 3000 on a system people actually own)

In general an Atari arcade set for the PS2/Xbox/GC would be great.

Tetris (but I think its a legal mess to get the arcade version)

Star Wars (yeah there is a HTF GC port)

Ghosts n Goblins

Raiden

youre right, there has never been authentic donkey kong on any system either

Donkey Kong 64 has a hidden Donkey Kong arcade machine in it... it seems quite faithful to me.

Q*Bert

Hasbro/Infogrames/Atari released an updated version of Q*Bert a couple of years ago for Playstation and PC, and it included an arcade perfect version of the original Q*Bert on it, as well as some new "adventure" mode BTW, I agree with the Sega Classics idea- it's amazing that classics like Zaxxon, Pengo, and Congo Bongo have never showed up in any compilation.

I don't have the time, or interest, to find it on my own- can you tell me where to find it in the game? Or, if there's a cheat to go right to it?
