belty #1 Posted April 13, 2004 Used to love this in the arcades, adding extra 10p's for more fuel, did anything like this come out for the 2600?
joeybastard #2 Posted April 13, 2004 There's been a few discussions about Lunar Lander for the VCS. Do a search of the forums, you'll find 'em.
oesii #3 Posted April 13, 2004 There's a great homebrew, This Planet Sucks, which is a nice rendition of the lunar lander gameplay. It was also based on a Taito arcade game: http://www.atariage.com/software_page.html...wareLabelID=
joeybastard #4 Posted April 13, 2004 Indeed! I picked up TPS at PC5 and love it. My only complaint is I wish the background was black, the tan and brown just doesn't look right to me. That in no way takes away from it being a great game though.
Chris++ #5 Posted April 13, 2004 There's also Gravitar, a late-period Atari title that actually stands up really well when compared to the arcade version. The thrust/fuel/dangerous surface thing survives from Lunar Lander, but shooting and multiple landscapes are added. Keep in mind, however, that it's really, really, really, really, really, really, really, really, really, really, really, really, really hard. There's also Thomas's Thrust, which I prefer to the above. But these aren't simulation games, so I don't want to give you the wrong idea. They're action games with the thrusting mechanism from Lunar Lander.
belty #6 Posted April 13, 2004 Thanks chaps, just had a look into these, and have just downloaded the 'This Planet Sucks' ROM and it's great, looked on the Atariage store, it's $18 top stuff, then see there's no PAL cart, boo-hoo, the downside of PAL Atari's. Will check out Gravitar and Thrust.
joeybastard #7 Posted April 13, 2004 Keep in mind, however, that it's really, really, really, really, really, really, really, really, really, really, really, really, really hard. Boy, you writers sure are descriptive!
Chris++ #8 Posted April 13, 2004 Well, let's face it -- some people have a way with words, and others just......um......ah, y'know.....um......others just.....uh........ With apologies to Steve Martin.
joeybastard #9 Posted April 13, 2004 Yeah, although only you know what "decriptive" means. I fixed it before you posted -NAH NAH
Chris++ #10 Posted April 13, 2004 I changed my response before you corrected me. HAR! (Hey, this is a fun game!)
joeybastard #11 Posted April 13, 2004 I changed my response before you corrected me. HAR! (Hey, this is a fun game!) I'm not positive but I think we both just traveled very slightly into the past to make that happen.
Adrian M #13 Posted April 13, 2004 There's a "lunar lander" type mode in Starship. You really have to use your imagination a bit to see the resemblance though.
dwh #14 Posted April 14, 2004 I would like to see a (good) Lunar Lander made for the 2600.There is a new homebrew for the Odyssey 2 coming out soon, that is a Lunar Lander clone. How dare the O2 get this game before the 2600!
Rob Mitchell #15 Posted April 14, 2004 The only real home version of Lunar Lander for any console is Moon Lander for the Vectrex. It has real analog thrust. All the before mentioned 2600 games (Gravitar/ Thrust) have digital thrust. This Planet Sucks has an interesting approach to getting around the lack of analog control of thrust. I wonder if a paddle could be used for control of analog thrust for a 2600 Lunar Lander game? The "Lunar Lander" on the 2600 Starship cart was and is a waste of time! Thomas Jentzsch #16 Posted April 14, 2004 All the before mentioned 2600 games (Gravitar/ Thrust) have digital thrust. Yup, and AFAIK that's realistic, since you can either turn the rockets on or off.
+Nathan Strum #17 Posted April 14, 2004 I wonder if a paddle could be used for control of analog thrust for a 2600 Lunar Lander game? How would you handle rotate left/right? That would be the tricky part. The arcade game used buttons for rotating. I really liked the arcade's analog thrust control. It gave the game a lot of finesse. But still, the thrust button works just fine in Gravitar. I think that would work well enough for a 2600 Lunar Lander.
Rob Mitchell #18 Posted April 15, 2004 All the before mentioned 2600 games (Gravitar/ Thrust) have digital thrust. Yup, and AFAIK that's realistic, since you can either turn the rockets on or off. But the Apollo program LEM had analog thrust ... I wonder if a paddle could be used for control of analog thrust for a 2600 Lunar Lander game? How would you handle rotate left/right? That would be the tricky part. The arcade game used buttons for rotating. Well that would require a second controller .. SteveW #19 Posted April 15, 2004 There's a Lunar Lander type game included as a mini-game on level 5 of Escape From The Mindmaster. Maybe someone could isolate the code, and expand it to a full game?

Max-T #21 Posted April 15, 2004 Sorry to intrude unwanted into yet another thread, but, Belty... You know that you can get a multi-system television set for a not undecent price?.? Such sets can accept NTSC/PAL/SECAM signals and display all correctly. If you want further details, please feel free to PM me for a link or two. I don't want to flood the forum with another ill-advised, mine-own-generated post that I will get flamed for. But I'll do my best to help you out if you have any more questions. --Max
Happy_Dude #22 Posted April 15, 2004 I would like to see a (good) Lunar Lander made for the 2600 | I wanted a proof of concept before saying anything but I'v been looking into doing a lunar lander game for awhile now (I wanted to do a gravity game ) It wouldn't be moon exclusive. Other planets to land on with different gravity etc .... I was thinking dual paddle control for thrusting and rotating (or Paddle(thrust) / Driving controller (rotation) )
