maibock #1 Posted April 14, 2004 I've always been intrigued with these games, but never played them much. My kids have been playing though since they we quite young on the SNES. I'd help them on a tough part or a difficult boss, but for the most part it was their games. I'm happy to see that as they've gotten older, they still enjoy playing these games. In fact my oldest bought X5 last night for the ps1 with his hard earned money. Since the early games, I've admired how megaman seemed to be innovative with each level. The whole mechanical theme truly works well and I'm always amazed at what they can do to each level. So, last night I'm watching the kids play X5 and I notice a few things. 1st - it seems that they've dumb downed the game a bit by adding silly chat text instructions that have never been there before. I realize there's a new audience to cater to, but even my 11 year old was getting annoyed when common sense instructions would hold his game up. Things like "jump down and go through the door" to endless boring taunts from the level boss. All in all though fun game. 2nd observation - The names of the bosses were always kind of cheesey in a campy type of way. It's the same in X5, but fun to be had to guess the name just by looking at their profile image. Anyone ever notice this? One of the bosses picture had a rose on him. As we entered the level, his name was "Axle the red". I immediately said, Oh, it must be Axel Rose of Guns& Roses. My kid said something to the fact of "uh. yeah dad, right". Sure enough.. when the game opened up, the screen was filled with roses and in the background stood what only could be described as "gun looking things". The reference was quite apparent. So, I wonder, are there themes like this throughout the megaman games? or was this just an isolated incedent from an G&R fan?
KaineMaxwell #2 Posted April 14, 2004 I grew up with the Megaman games. First one I played was 2, and loved them since. The X series took it to a ne wlevel with better boss names and a darker feel, but maybe they did milk the cow too much.
Mr.FoodMonster #3 Posted April 14, 2004 The names in the X series are notoriously bad. The japanese names are better, but not by much. Its part of the tradition with the games. The 'silly chat instructions' are only for the first tiny bit of the game. All games have some form of 'This is how you do this' now, and its not that big of a deal, really. The reason for the 'endless boring taunts' are that there is actually a loose story through all the X games. Its not much, but there is a reason to it. Games always have references to something, Guilty Gear X has a charater making fun of Axel Rose as well
MegaManFan #4 Posted April 14, 2004 Even with the first X game, you could see them gradually transitioning into adding more text and plot to the stories, since Dr. Light "guides you" by talking to you and giving you upgrades each time you get a capsule. This culminates in X4, when you get full on anime sequences with bad english voice overdubs. X4 is also for a lot of reasons the pinnacle of the X series, because of it's blend of action, robot master powers that make sense, and strategy. X games since then have been okay, but haven't quite achieved that standard of perfection.
Shortly #5 Posted April 14, 2004 Was the MegaMan collection for the GameCube released?
+kisrael #6 Posted April 14, 2004 heh, that hole Dr. Wright -> Dr. Light thing. I never got into X; I was in college and not gaming much when it came out, and...I guess I really like the old big pixel look of the original series. That "biorobot" thing was SO cool... If you're artistically inclined, you could try turning yourself or a friend into MegaMan style characters: I did that with me and my then GF: http://kisrael.com/viewblog.cgi?date=2001.04.
MegaManFan #7 Posted April 14, 2004 I've got more artwork for MM that I know what to do with as it is. The Mega Man Collection for GameCube and PS2 has not as I'm aware been released yet. Last target date I saw for either one was this May. If you've never played the X series, start with the first game for SNES. I find it has TREMENDOUS replay value - I never get tired of the graphics, the music, or the challenge. I even went through the entire game and got every heart container and power up just so I could get the hidden "HADOUKEN" blast.
Shortly #8 Posted April 14, 2004 http://www.capcom.com/release_dates.xpml Pushed back to the end of june! Which brings the question, should I get the GC or the GBA version of it?
Mr.FoodMonster #9 Posted April 14, 2004 The GBA version is different then the GC and PS2 version, it has the Megaman 1-5 GB games, not the other ones.

And yes, the bosses names were changed in the American version of X5 to mimic names of Guns N Roses band members past & present. Mattrex, Dark Dizzy, Grizzly Slash, Squid Adler, Izzy Glow, Axle the Red and Duff McWhalen. I agree with you wholeheartedly, MMF: X4 is the best of the X series without question. figgler #14 Posted April 15, 2004 I've always liked the 'X-Universe' not as much as the real Mega Man, but still had a great personality. What about Mega Man Xtreme? Xot #15 Posted April 15, 2004 I've always liked the 'X-Universe' not as much as the real Mega Man, but still had a great personality. What about Mega Man Xtreme? The 8-bit Mega Man X titles for GB. Never tried them, but forever intrigued... For someone who just wants to PLAY the games, and not obsessively collection them like me, the collections coming out this summer are a dream come true. All 5 of the original GB Mega Man games on one GBA cart (and colorized, too, right?) and all 8 original Mega Man games, PLUS the two arcade vs. fighters on one GC or PS2 disc. You can't NOT love this.
KaineMaxwell #16 Posted April 15, 2004 Heh, I can't beat Colonel for beans in X4 now. And for Mega Man fans, there's a fun webcomic: http://www.bobandgeorge.com/index.html
Stingray #17 Posted April 15, 2004 [8 original Mega Man games, PLUS the two arcade vs. fighters on one GC or PS2 disc. You can't NOT love this. Whoa, back up! When is this coming out? I was totally nuts for the original NES Megaman games. I never liked the later X series. If I can get all of those early games on a PS2 disk I'd be in heaven!!! -S
mechanized #18 Posted April 16, 2004 The anniversary collections for GameCube and PlayStation2 should be out in May, I think. The GBA collection (Mega Man I-V) will be out later in the year. On Mega Man X5 - it's a good game, but the names went in some retarded hair metal direction. Your kids might have said "Yeah, right, dad." but you hit the proverbial nail on the head. I'm thinking I prefer X4 more (since I'm of the opinion that, of the two, you really only need one of them [i do have both, though..] so you can actually play as Zero) but I cannot remember... I basically prefer the one without the irritating hover bike stage. Mega Man X6, though? I highly advise avoiding it. Some of the poorest level design in the series, and it's often more difficult than fun will allow (and not just for me, this is a common gripe with the game). mechanized #24 Posted April 18, 2004 I'm more ticked about the GBA game being so far back, really. I already have all the other Mega Man games released domestically (excepting X7, those crappy Legends games, and Tron Bonne that isn't really Mega Man) for consoles, I have the arcade games on an emulator (though I'm happy to upgrade to something utterly legal). It would have been great if the Anniversary Collection had Battle & Chase on it. I mean, it'd be such an elementary choice, too... But, right, the GBA game. I didn't touch most of the Game Boy Mega Man games because I didn't like playing Mega Man on such a small screen, nevermind the lack of color and distinctly different play control and screen area-limited game visibility (Mega Man simply should have had smaller sprites all around... but hey). So the GBA game will facilitate my finally giving those games a try (I only have the first GB Mega Man) and on my nice and spiffy Game Boy Player. Now, though.. I need to get back to Mega Man & Bass. Raijin Z #25 Posted April 18, 2004 God, whatever happened to [Ability] Man? You'll soon see that X5's north american boss naming scheme is intentional.
