Space Raiders, from the creators of Space Invaders

I just picked up this game, Space Raiders, for the GameCube tonight. It has blurbed on the cover the phrase "From the creators of 'Space Invaders'". It's apparently made (or more likely, licensed) by Taito. It's a fun take on the Space Invaders genre. I just started playing it, and the first levels are set in an alleyway, and the aliens move and fire at you while you return fire in a 3rd person persepctive. Steel drums sitting in the alleyway act as shields.

 

This looks like a good idea, and could have made a great family game, but I noticed on the back that the game's rated T for Teen, and it includes 'Blood and Gore, Partial Nudity, and Violence'. If they knew what was good for them, the developers would have left out the blood and nudity, and tried to get an E for Everyone rating. Making it inaccessible to all ages was a mistake, IMO.

 

Anyone try this game yet?

I know it's wrong, but i'm going to reply to my own post.

 

I managed to finish the game in about an hour and a half. In the Story mode, it gives you unlimited continues. That really limits it's replay value. But the gameplay gets pretty intense. It's more like Ikaruga than Space Invaders. The bosses throw everything they can at you. It's a good game for shooter fans, but you won't be playing it over and over. It's got a 2-player mode, but I don't have another player handy to test it out.

 

SteveW's quick review: If you have a GameCube and you like shooters like Ikaruga, Mars Matrix, GigaWing, etc., you'll enjoy Space Raiders. But you might wait until it hits the $20 pricepoint. I think the $30 I paid for it was a little much for such a short game.

Some of the aliens look oddly 'boob-like'. If you like giant purple boobs that fire blue plasma from their nipples, this is your game!

 

I don't know where the nudity comes in at either. But I only played two of the three characters. According to the case back, there's 3 characters: Justin, a vaguely asian looking teenager with blonde hair (asian blondes always look bizarre, if you ask me), Naji, an African-American cop who, for no reason, wears a shiny white superhero-looking uniform, and Ashley, a typical hot blonde with huge hooters who rides motorcycles and kicks ass. I didn't try out her story mode yet, so i'm not sure if, in the middle of one of the many boss fights, she strips and jiggles 'em for our amusement. That would be a very Japanese kind of thing, though.

Although they don't toss boobs at you, Sentimental Shooting has you shooting the clothing off of anime girls. Oh, those crazy Japanese!
